Ok, can't decide if this is steamy (or sleepy?) Sho in black and white. Whichever it is, yoshiko is trying to kill us! :luv17:

Don't know if these have posted yet. I'm not sure how they can all keep a straight face when they get their 20th Citizen watch. Boyang looks like he's saying "But I already have a whole bunch of these!!!!"

how about steamy sleepy

I am a dead banana anyway so cannot be killed again! thus all those dead banana photos are welcome ;)

It seems that Shoma burst out laughing in medal ceremony cox someone (photographer?) told him he's showing the "opposite" side of medal: https://twitter.com/yuzu_katsuko/status/1096396217871814656

Shoma is so relatable for some reason... he has a very chaotic energy lmao. I absolutely adore watching him skate. I hope I can see him in the Worlds podium.

A closer look on Shoma's podium moment at 4CC:

I feel sinful, that's quite... a view XD

The lighting.. was directly...on the goods... :o:

I have conflicting feelings about this - like I hope they will at least provide a small steps or something for the highest podium in the future, because I feel bad for him having to clamber on like that almost every time, but in the same breath - this very situation makes for such delicious DB material :p

A step is much appreciated. The situation still will be funny. Organizer will be, “ Shoma got Gold, Where is the step?” Or Shoma bring out his own personal step!! That will be extra hilarious 😂. Can you imagine he carrying step while skate to podium. 🤣
I think this becoming apparent now, since Olympic the call for podium change from bronze to gold, not the other way around. Previously he just step to silver or bronze podium to go to gold.

I never know what to think about that. I think it was at Sk Can that Keegan motioned to him that he should JUMP up onto the top step. He's too small though! :luv17: Mostly the other guys just laugh, rather than help him. I'm not remembering it, but probably the same thing happened at NHK and (not quite as much) at Nats because he was just wearing his gym shoes...I want him to waddle out in his gym shoes again! Kakkoii!

There's a wonderful article about Shoma from Nikkan Sports:
https://www.nikkansports.com/sports...m_medium=social&utm_campaign=nikkansports_ogp

Contrast to most of articles/ interviews' "dramatic" or "not really appreciate the hard work of athletes" perspective, Matsumoto Wataru (the reporter of this article) showed the changes of Uno's speech between 2018 OG and 4CC.

***************************************************************
In the previous season, although Uno was one of the top skaters, there was no speeches that he consciously talked about (he wants to get) “Gold medal in Olympics”.

Although "air-headed" (tennen) was always used to describe Uno, somehow, for me, it didn't sound right. As Olympics was a competition that Uno "wants to do his best", and he really did.

(Then the whole comment from Uno in 4CC was quoted, for his answer to "why he said he want to win" in post game interview.)*

After the interview, Matsumoto met Demizu by chance. When Demizu heard Uno's comment, with his utmost smile, he replied "Oh really? I am really happy."

Demizu further said "I always talk positively, and I think it was the right timing to tell Uno (that I want him to win in WC). I have the experience that I feel regretful afterwards that I didn't tell him what I think, so "I don't want to be regret". I really hope that Uno will think "oh it was great" when he finish his competitive career. It would be lonely if he looked back and found out he didn't win in major competitions"

Uno started to work with Demizu since May 2017. After Japan National 2017, where Uno won his spot to Olympics, he said the relationship between him and Demizu “really helps”, then he made people laughed by saying “there’re no changes with my body”. Demi-san was asked about Uno’s comment a few days later, “That’s fine. What I said were just some hints, so it’s not necessary to care too much about it. Even as a trainer, figure skating is a world with many things that I don’t know. Especially for Uno, he’s totally different when he’s on/ off the ice. Probably Uno himself thinks he has to finish (with a satisfactory performance).“ Demizu’s reply left a strong impression for me.

Even In the competition venue filled with an intense atmosphere, before the 6 minute warm-up, Uno’s warm-up till now, was mainly focus on moving his body in a relax (happy) way such as playing basketball, or playing “catch ball game” using tennis ball. Probably other skaters want to say “Uno’s warm up exercise looks so fun”. On the other hand, at the beginning Demizu met Uno, he predicted that “probably Uno will injure himself around 21 years old”. As Uno has already turned 21, Demizu was planning to think about how to adjust (Uno’s training menus) again after this season.

It turned out that it was Uno who realized the necessity of warm-up by himself first. He sprained his ankle in Japan Nationals that was held right after his birthday. He even sprained on the same place twice again before he headed to 4CC.

Uno revealed: “The same place was injured 3 times. In the past, I thought that warm-up is ‘if I move my body, it’s OK’ and did various warm-up. When I was injured for the 3rd time, I think ‘I won’t be cured unless I do warm-up seriously and take care my injury seriously’. So far what I did was just something ‘warm-up alike’…(laughs)”

There’s no longer something “playful” for the final adjustment before heading to the rink. Being instructed by Demizu who he trusted, Uno takes around 30 minutes to warm-up his body. Uno looks like he is very stubborn, but sometimes there are exceptions.

“I don’t listen to others at all, but I always listen to (what they say) for whom I trust.”

The “eager to win announcement” at World Championship came out when Uno and Demi-san vector with the same direction. Uno was driven by the words “from whom his truly trust”. Demizu who understands Uno’s personality, built up their reliable relationship day by day, ‘I want Uno will say “it’s great!” when he ends his competitive career’, he thinks the importance to stick with results from heart.

Since 2019 begins, there were new pieces added to Uno’s puzzle, from reformation of warm-up menus, victory in 4CC Championship, to “eager to win announcement” at World Championship. What will he say when his puzzle is complete? I can hardly wait for his comment.

Notes:
Nikkan Sports also quoted part of Shoma's comment in their previous article, feimeicheng (at instagram) translated the conversation between Shoma and Demi-san to English:

gacchan, thank you so much for the translation! I look forward to the next part. I feel very grateful that Shoma is surrounded by kind people who all wish him the best for his career, including Demi-san. Also.. Shoma's heart is truly gentle that he is motivated the most to win for the people who supported him, more than for himself.

Also, today is the first anniversary of Olympic Winter: https://mobile.twitter.com/gorin/status/1096574884300369920

Still a stunning program a year after. Those spins together at the end with the violins is such a highlight. I'm still really impressed by the construction of this program, it truly feels like a winter witch prince coming in to bring frost with his fingertips. I guess I also have to thank Mama Uno for requesting Vivaldi's Winter to Fluffy, because it's one of her favorites that she wants to see Shoma skate to.

And, it seems that the silver curse has really lifted XD Grampus the Orca won 1st place for the J-League favorite mascot (?) Award: https://mobile.twitter.com/J_League/status/1096644383917539328

He has one in a billion combination of raw talent, enjoyment of his field, and the drive. In the world when being passionate about what you do is so rare, success is so rare, when he succeeds, it feels that the world is still at least a little bit fair. I have the same feels when I watch Zagitova. That’s why I keep watching.

Thank you very much, gacchan!

Happy anniversary to Olympics Winter :luv17: Shoma’s Winter in general but especially the performances at the Olympics hold a special place in my heart, I was a pretty new fan of him back then and I was just blown away. Such a gorgeous program and it fit Shoma so well. I feel like it’s a bit underrated bc of the “oh, no, it’s a warhorse” mentality

Better late than never, thank you for sharing your view on MS (and other comments made)! I always think people can further enjoy figure skating from other perspectives/ angles if you know about the music used by skaters, or with dance background :-)

As for Grampus, he "defended his title" for the most favourite mascot award lol.

Can't remember if anyone has posted here...you can see what was Shoma during while Demi-san was stretching (?) his feet: https://twitter.com/soraneko_033/status/1096769026473156608 (from 30" ish) Shoma looked so concentrated!

On the other hand...as my translation of Nikkan Sport turned out as a huge word wall...I just want to add some remarks here:
1. Instead of reading my word wall, you may find Feimeicheng's abstract via her instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt8CfVogCsv/
2. Shoma's comment in OG was skipped
3. Shoma's full comment in 4CC was also...skipped (the core of his comment has already been translated some days ago i think)
4. Please forgive my crap English and just in case of any mistakes made, please let me know.
5. Oh...Matsumoto has written another nice article of Shoma during OG: https://www.nikkansports.com/olympi...m_medium=social&utm_campaign=nikkansports_ogp
In the last paragraph, Shoma commented that figure skating is nice cox even people who have a smaller body like him, can still compete with other top skaters.

/a really dead banana now

Gacchan, thank you so much for your translation! It's a very interesting article and I'm so proud of this mature and confident Shoma. I think you can even see it in his eyes, they reflect maturity and confidence.

Thanks to Demi-san, he's a true blessing for Shoma (and all of us since we know he's in good hands).

And happy OG Winter anniversary! I love that program and its costumes! Shoma really turned into a Winter frosted prince when he skated it, it was magical.

Thank you for the follow-up of translation gacchan! Please rest your dead banana soul after working so hard XD This season has been tough but at the same time.. I'm happy to witness Shoma maturing to be a beautiful young man, with tougher challenges to face and deal with.

Update: It seems that the banner was sent to U.S. Figure Skating by someone, and it will be sent back to Japan (to Yoshiko-san)!
I am glad that Yoshiko-san can get back her really precious banner...

I'm so glad! Yoshiko-san is a really kind person who have shared so many of her photos of Shoma.. and the banner has been there for so long (it was shown in so many of Shoma's skating videos!).. I'm glad it was returned to her TT TT

I agree. Talent can only take you so far. You have to really WANT it and have the drive to practice day in and day out. His dedication and work ethic is incredible.

BTW -- I saw your post in another thread. I'm sorry you didn't have the chance to see the Prince at the GPF in Vancouver. There is usually a FOR SALE section here on GS for tickets for events. There were many available tickets after several skaters withdrew. Some were as cheap as 50% off.

ADDING -- Oh hooray! Just saw that Yoshiko's banner was returned. Thank goodness! I felt so bad for her. Everyone wants to own a beautiful, princely banner like that one. All's well that ends well!!!!
