Kwan, Slutskaya to follow in Cohen's direction?

Hmm, otherwise Kwan wouldn't have needed to petition, right? she was 3rd in 2002.

You got me thinking, RD. I am not sure how one qualifies for the Olys, that is why I asked.

I think the Olys accepts skaters by Federations. In Kwan's case, she did not skate the Nats, so the USFS decided to allow her to go to the Olys subject to a test because of her groin problem. She was already a two-time medalist Olympian.

Again, I am not sure what the rules are for a present Oly medalist to be automatically eligible for the next Olys. I mention this because of Sasha. If she must go to Nats in 2009, she will have to compete against a bevy of high technical skaters. If she does not podium at Nats, she can not go to 2009 Worlds. If she does not go to Worlds, she will only be permitted to the Olys based on an automatic Oly rule, which I am not sure of.

I don't think you have to go to the previous world championship to go to the Olympics. As far as I know each federation chooses who they send. In the U.S., it is almost always simply the top finishers at Nationals (Kwan and Kerrigan were notable exceptional cases).

I believe that the only thing an Olympic medal buys you is free admission to nationals without going through qualifying (not sure about this?)

«Incredible talent. Very rare. Not of this earth, - said Tarasova of the athlete. - I have never met a person who would so fanatically and cheerfully torture herself during practices. Sasha takes on a workload of a man. I didn't think she could work like that».

Doesn't sound like a lazy athlete to me. Also Aruntunian had good things to say about Sasha as well and he used to coach her jumps over the summer.

Continue reading the interview. Tarasova also said that Sasha spent all day shopping in Paris, and all night making cookies, then was too tired and too sick to practice for days.

When she practices, she practices hard. But when something else captures her interest, practice goes out the window.

hmm, I think we're just going to go round and round in circles. Some (inc. me) either think she didn't work hard enough or worked "in cycles", others are going to defend her and say she DID work hard *all the time* and the medals prove it. Really, what's new under the sun

That is exactly my problem with threads like this, RD. Why is it so important to some posters to make the same criticisms of a skater (or anyone else) over and over and over. Sasha's lazy, and besides that she doesn't always train hard enough, and by the way did I mention she's lazy?

But I do understand why the defenders persist in their support. When you choose a favorite to cheer for, when someone's performances catch your eye and bring joy to your heart, you make an emotional investment. When meanies start ganging up on her, naturally you will fly to her rescue. That's just human nature. :)

Usually here on this forum, an argument continues until a) both sides agree to disagree or b) both sides reach a compromise. On topics regarding Kwan or Cohen it is virtually ALWAYS "a".

As for the defenders, it really depends. I think it's more important HOW this "defense" is accomplished. Are posters dragging down other skaters to bring her up, or are they countering the opposing posters' arguments and not resorting to attacks on that poster? As far as this thread goes I think it's going pretty well, if not now a little repetitive. Emotions can be a tough thing for us to keep in check.

You should listen to Math a little more!!! For instance, I know that Math adores   Michelle, yet, he is able to see Sasha for what she is..........a good artistic skater. I give him so much credit to be able to have an adult conversation or disagreement while knowing he adores another skater.

I agree, it gets so annoying and boring!! By the way Math, did you forget ...........OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

Good post Dee, and why over and over and over again blast the forum? Who drags Sasha or Michelle into a thread not intended in the topic?

Joe

It's nothing simpler than: if you like a skater, you're going to say good things about her and probably defend her if she is being "criticized" by others, and if you don't like a skater, you'll do the opposite. Nothing out of the ordinary there.

That's not true for me!! When Johnny Weir made mistakes at the 06 Olympics, I was so angry with him and I like Johnny very, very much. He's my second favorite male skater. Anyhow, the difference between Johnny is that I thought he was not serious about the Olympics and I think other favorites were. It just wasn't their night.

I made many comments about Johnny and they weren't defending him at all. So your point is moot!!

Dee

Well...

OK THEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not what I meant, exactly, but I'm no longer going to debate that point. We'll just go where this thread is going...ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE

One thing- I think certain people like to "take it out" on me (some posters might prefer to call it "teasing") partly because I don't have a favorite skater, therefore no one to "defend" or "stand up for"- or if it isn't I really don't give a hoot what the reason is. It's been happening practically as long as I've been a member here. It's also what this forum thrives on. Most posters do have a favorite indeed. But tell you what, If I really didn't like skating (to paraphrase some poster) I'd have left here a long time ago- especially with all the BS I've put up with over the years. end of rant.

Aw, Red Dog, now I feel bad. I'm sorry if I seemed like I was picking on you. (It's not your fault if you can't see the sheer Kwanliness of her majesty, LOL.) Rock on, bro. :)

RD - It's not your favorite that people complain. It is your negative opinions about the Ladies that get other posters riled up.

Stop it... you give as good as you get... I expect more from you than a "why is everyone picking on me??!!"

No one has to post on this board... we all choose to because we have a passion for the sport. If you don't have a favorite, who cares? If you have a different opinion, then post it and be prepared to defend it. Its all good... Why all the angst?

But you really do need to recognize that  Michelle Kwan:bow: is the greatest of all time and that's all that really matters...
