Nathan Chen

His response about next year is interesting. Earlier in the season, he seemed sure he would continue this double life arrangement for at least another year. I agree with him that skating has a more finite end date than school though. It seems like Raf really wants him back in CA, which would make sense if they want to up the tech content next year in preparation for the Olympics.

Ugh, apparently he got sick again which is why he didn't go back to California.

Now, I don't wanna be all 'told-you-so', but with all those who were like 'Nathan/his team have a plan, trust him/them', I was still sceptical the whole time, as to what the real reason behind Nathan's prolonged stay at Yale is. And I was pretty sure that this wasn't exactly his or his team's decision, but that they simply had no other choice (for whatever reason).
So yeah, guess who was right in the end... :slink:

Hopefully his stamina is alright after being sick, he needs it for his FS layout and I would argue that it's his biggest advantage over all the other skaters. And even a light case of a cold can really mess you up in that regard for quite some time after. :(
Then again, that may be different for elite athletes...?

(ETA: yay for WTT!)

I questioned why he stayed at Yale as well - it didn’t seem to make much sense even if he was feeling super confident and well prepared, and it’s not like CT is closer to Japan than California.

But he will get some training with Raf in Japan - SP isnt until Thursday. And hopefully he wasn’t that sick and he has gotten his stamina back.

I'm not sure you were the only one who was concerned he didn't go back to Cali, but they still did the best they could and had a plan and people should trust him/them. It's not the end of the world that he couldn't go back to Raf as long as he kept in contact with him and kept up with his training this last month. If anything it's great he didn't if he was feeling unwell and flying across country wouldn't help. He would be able to recover better for worlds in New Haven.

But that's my point. ;) It was an emergency plan born out of necessity, and not their actual, planned strategy.

Plans the same layout as Nats.

Now I do wonder, does he mean the layout that he actually skated, or the one that he initially planned to do, which included the 4S...?

I wish there is recording somewhere we can listen to, we might have some idea of how he is recovering. The tweets didn’t mention if he has gotten over his sickness. Last year, he sounded pretty bad after his fs during olympics. His cough lasted quite some time when he got sick two weeks after school started, he was caught coughing quite a lot in aboutNathan’s SkAm videos and occasionally coughing during the interview with Liza in Russia.

Whatever the reason he didn’t go back Cali as originally planned doesn’t really matter anymore at this point. Let us pray he totally get over the sickness by now and get his stamina back. Good thing is it happened last week than this week. With all the mid term stress and flu season not ended, it is no surprise he got sick.

There is no AC in JE dorms, I am wondering how Nathan is going to cope with that challenge if he is serious about summer school. Plus with either session A or session B, it is one month away from Raf again. Unless he is not planning to come back next fall, I am wondering if Raf will be happy about it.

Going to WTT is the best part of the conference call report. Yay:luv17:

Even if he’s intending to do 4S, likely he would be keeping it to himself for now. We will see!

Wonder if there’s the possibility of him transferring to a school in California, if he has to move back. Or he could continue his education at Yale in the future.

I think there have been some benefits (skating wise) to him being at school this season - including more limited training time. Don’t think it would be best for him to train full force for the next three years, given his goal of OG 2022. But not going to school doesn’t have to equate with overtraining.

Anyways this isn’t important at this moment - as Nathan said, he’s focusing on Worlds right now.

I'm torn on Nathan possibly adding a fifth quad... obviously I'd rather see him do as little quads as possible, so he can focus more on the in-between skating and performing his program...
But then again, it might be the only way to have an edge over the other top men... and I do stupidly want him to win, even though logically I should prefer a well-performed skate no matter the result, since it would be more rewarding.
I guess it's because last year he was up against a 'weakened' post-olympic field, and I want him to also get the world title in a 'regular' season.

ETA:

Agreed. It might have been a blessing in disguise of sorts. Less risk of injuring himself/overstraining his body, and it probably (hopefully) also taught him to focus on quality over quantity jumps-wise.

Well it's not as if he doesn't have excellent schools closer to home: Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, or USC are all excellent options. He could always wait until grad school to go Ivy, but I have no idea how he and his family feel about this.

Must be a bit bored - but he seems to have been inspired to play piano this semester (or at least share video) from his music class.

Good thing this piano is more in tune than the last one:p

If he can skate like he did at Nationals - he has a good chance to win. 5th quad or not.

Hope he’s not worrying too much about winning the gold medal here though.

Crossing my fingers for a repeat as World Champion. It's strange how I'm more nervous for Nathan than Rika considering he already has a title (and she likes to give me heart attacks in the SP) but... go, Nathan, go!
