Why Martynova

To my surprise I have noticed that the Russian federation decided to send Martynova to Worlds. I knew that Piseev was very much invested in her.

But, how could they name her without waiting to see how she does at Junior Worlds? Especially since the two ladies who did the best at the Cup of Russia Final were supposed to get the spots. She didn't medal at the Nationals, the Euros, and Cup of Russia Finals, so why she should she be named to the World Team ahead of the ladies who did?

If the US federation pulled a stunt like that, they would have to deal with lots of outrage. Imagine if the US Fed decided to send Bebe instead of Alyssa to Worlds even though Bebe came behind Alyssa at Nationals.. People would be fuming so much that smoke would come out of their ears

Didn't that happen with a "big name" about a year ago? And it didn't work out.

Krenseby - I believe Piseev was pleased with Martinova in last year's Worlds. She was, imo, quite good. However, I think you made some good points in citing the CoR, Russain Nats and Euros.

I think it's quite possible that Martynova is Russia's best chance for either maintaining two spots for the next Worlds or for just getting a good placement altogether. However, that turns all of those 3 competitions a farce. Why have two qualifying competions such as the CoR and the Nats if the results of both end up being disregarded. I just feel that the skaters who worked hard to do well at those competitins have been taken for a ride. I feel particularly for Ievleva who made a pretty impressive debut at both Nationals and Euros. I hope she does not feel discouraged; after all, she has at least been named as first and only alternate. (I am puzzled about why there was only one alternate named.)

yeah that's true that if the United States figure skating Association pulled a stunt like that they people would be fuming.

Well the Russian Figure Skating Association must've had their reasons for sending Martinova, well she was I believe that top ranked Russian at Euros or second best russian one of the two and usually the European Associations go by the best finish(es) at Europeans to name their world teams.

I know that the US goes by Nationals, but Mexico goes by Four Continents, it depends on the Association but however, Russia I know does it by the finishes at Euros. I wish myself that Elena Sokolova would go back to her full potential as I know that she can but just hasn't yet.

I believe Russia made a great choice with Martinova. At least she has a 3Z and 3F. She may have had a dissappointing Nationals, but she is capabale of maintaining 2 spots for Russia if Sokolova can finish 12th at Worlds(which I expect will happen:laugh: ) and Martinova can make the LP cut like last year. Plus the experience will help leading up to 2010. I'd rather see how the other Russian ladies do in the GP next season before putting too much confidence in them.

Remember that Martynova wasn't sent to Euros this year cause she finished fourth at the Russian Nationals ;-)

Russian Federation chose Martynova instead of Ievleva for World Championships, because she won Russian Junior Nationals. (The Junior Nationals were held sometime after senior Nationals, close to Russian Cup as far as I understood.) Besides, there was a control skate for Ievleva before making the final decision for Worlds' team. Piseev was dissapointed with Martynova's performance in World Junior Championships, but he was even more dissapointed with Ievleva's control skate. So, they obviously decided that Martynova would be better as Ievleva anyway... This is information I read in Russian media (especially www.allsport.ru). I will try to translate some news articles about this topic, if/when I have a little bit of free time.

Well, the preview of Worlds on the main site said something about not sending the National Champion/silver medalists due to poor showings in Europeans. I think this is also what happened with the men; Andrei Griazev is no longer on the world team. :o

It isn't as if the RFSF has much choice when it comes to Ladies. There is not a consistent skater in the bunch. Martynova was VERY disappointing at Junior Worlds, finishing behind her teammate who was skating at her very first major international event.

But who else is there? Ievleva has nice presentation and spins, but she has no lutz or flip. Doronina bombed majorly at Europeans and didn't even make it out of the SP. Volchkova is done.

It was Martynova or nothing, and the possibility remains that Sokolova COULD go alone to Worlds. The RFSF will monitor Martynova right up to the time she is due to leave for Tokyo. If she doesn't look ready, they will pull her from the event.

What possible advantage could they gain by pulling Martynova out of the lot? Could a terrible performance from Marynova and a decent from Sokolova reduce the next year's team to one spot? Could the federation earn more spots by sending Sokolova alone? Wow..

Sorry to barge in but wasn't there someone young named Glebova or something like that, who Anna thought was one of the most talented? From the pix she looked very promising. Not ready yet, I suppose.

Glebova is Russian.... the only hitch is that she is competing for Estonia!! She is kinda like Tatiana Malinina who was also Russian but competed for Kazakhstan.

Malinina competed for Uzbekistan, not Kazakhstan. But she and her husband Roman Skorniakov (who also competed for Uzbekistan) lived and trained in the US.

Actually THIS is the one I was remembering - Kozyreva. Glebova too but I thought she WAS Estonian.

Here's what Anna wrote about her FP:

Kozyreva

3F
3R turnout
FSSp forw to lfS
2A
3T
SlSt
LSp to b2h to B
3S step out
SpSt good flow
2S step out
CCoSp
FCSp to donut
Lovely, soft skating. She is young, 13 I think and look very promising, perhaps the most promising of all the skaters here save Tertychnaya. She needs more power and stamina (and consistency of course), but she is a pleasure to watch

31.74/43.42=75.06 to 118.02
Check out her other photos - she looks stunning in every one.

Yeah I feel really embarassed about writing that. I do remember that it was Uzbekistan that she competed for so I have no idea why I wrote Kazakhstan.

But as a 13 year old, they've gotta wait a couple of years before she becomes eligible, ey?

Hopefully, some other Russian ladies will take up the slack of earning Russia 2 spots for Worlds and maybe even medaling. (Doesn't look like it though.)
