Ladies - Free Program

Now,Now Red Dog, why disappointed? Beautiful skating at a higher tech level is all I could ask for. And the judges seemed fair. I love skating and can't wait for Caroline to join in the mix next year.

Well, that's good in a sense that the bar has been raised. But, I was hoping for the N. Americans to do well, and Kim(mie) to medal or at least do a nice free program. But they didn't, therefore my disappointment. I don't particularly care for Mao nor Miki.

Yu? from China had a rather uninterested facial expression, but for the record I think her scores were way too low. Because she is from China CCTV-5 showed both her short and long, and neither should have been ranked as low as they were.

Just to clarify a point, the South Koreans put a lady on the podium. Does this earn them 3 spots next year, or only 2 ?

Does anyone have a link to the final standings for the ladies? I'd like to know how Emily, Carolina, and some of the others ended up...

Thanks!

Goodness, I didn't think YuNa really had any "rough edges". Both programs were masterpieces of choreography and her jumps are more like a man-long vaulted, covering a huge amount of ice with super fast rotation. If you had students that were learning jumps I would run video of YuNa Kim as a learning tool. Midori Ito might have had more raw power, but YuNa spins faster in the air then any woman I have ever watched jump in my life. The two falls? An anomoly probably due to the injury-I can't remember ever seeing her fall before.

As far as Mao Asada-I think her Chopin short program is another choreographic masterpiece. Beautiful, light and well suited to Asada's strengths. Every step is beautiful and intricate, although I think she did it better during the grand prix (some nerves noted) it was still beautiful this week.

Brian Joubert-same thing-interesting unusual choreography, entrances into jumps were unique etc.

But Evan, Kimmie and Emily? Pedestrian choreography, boring, and in the case of Emily especially -not suited to her particular strengths. All three seemed very uncomfortable and awkward like they had just learned the program a month or so ago. Kimmie and Emily seemed to almost stumble through what were ill fitting programs.

The top three skaters in the world in the top 3 positions

though i would place it this way in terms of overall ability and talent

1. Yu-Na Kim (artistry)
2. Mao Asada-she can overcome Kim especially due to her 3 axel
3. Miki Ando!

But the rightful person got the top prize!!!

Wow

Wow, I am SO HAPPY I stayed away from all sites until I got to see it on TV. One of the Best. Worlds. Ever. Poor Kimmie though....and Yu-Na....I WAS SO ECSTATIC TO SEE ANDO >>> Asada!!! YAY MIKI! 15th at Oly to 1st at Worlds in 1 year. Asada will have her time come extremely soon.

What a tight competition this was. My puny thoughts on it are:

1. I love mao asada even more after what she did and her reaction to losing. I'm so happy she did the 3x even if barely 2footed. Too bad about the short, but again most of these young skaters are 16-17 so they'll be here for quite some time.

2. Gratz to Miki Ando. I was also thinking that she was skating for 2nd and needed more to win but her slim short prog lead made the difference. Good job.

3. Meissner has a fantastic attitude and I'm not a big fan of hers but she'll rebound.

4. Can someone explain why Hughe's had 3 of 5 jumps downgraded? That didn't make any sense because they all appeared to be completely rotated from my tv view. Also, was her performance that lackluster because the booth was piling it on to the extreme I thought.

5. I never get tired of hearing foreign speakers trying english. It's always cute to hear.

Im so happy Miki won the gold and Mao was also on the podium with silver. Two true champions. Can't wait til Vancouver when they again share the podium. Team Japan, now and in 2010!

I thought Asada was better, but the short program mistake really cost her the Gold. I never was a big fan of Ando and I'm still not...the performance, although clean, was just kinda bleh to me. Asada at least had that additional "oomph", I felt. Too bad about Yuna, though...I think her time will come.

Another strong effort by Kimmie, about the same as Nats and 4CCs...I liked that program (at least the beginning), hope she doesn't go back to something "plain" again next year. The field was just too deep and so many brought it to the table that it wasn't enough. Would Kimmie's effort have won medals at other Worlds, though?

About foreign skaters speaking english- I get the opposite impression. They really need to get a translator...it shouldn't have been too hard to find one in Japan to talk to Ando and Asada. I mean, they're sort of "fighting" for the right words to say...so in effect you get next to nothing out of those interviews.

My thoughts exactly.

Please. Canadians have been VERY patient with Mira - it's time for her to deal with her issues. Did you read about her boasting before Worlds - and then to get a 24th (last) place? Don't you think that indicates some kind of attitude problem?

I've always thought that she was cocky in her attitude and it is evident in her interview before Worlds. Now she has to eat her words. That has got to make the situation even more humiliating for her! But hopefully, she can learn from this situation and not make the same mistake again when speaking to the public...I was expecting the blame afterwards and it happened.

my thoughts

Wow, Miki Ando and Mao Asada were both really great in the long program. They were both equally good technically, I think, or about equal anyway, but Mao looked like she was enjoying herself more.

Yu Na, Kimmie, Emily, and Yukari were pretty good as well. It's too bad Sarah and Carolina had some falls. It's also too bad Joannie was so far down in the short that she couldn't pull up any higher but top 10 is still pretty good. I'm really disappointed in Mira Leung's skate. It's almost unbelievable that after her being 12th at the Olympics (am I right about 12th?) she was 24th at these Championships. I think it's because she showed up to skate without even practicing on the ice, or it's partly due to that anyway. That was dumb.

I feel better about Kimmie's 4th place after hearing her talk. She had a good atitude about the whole thing. But you could already see she was thinking about the changes she needs to make. She did not even skate that bad. But she has to up the anti.

It was a well deserved win for Ando. I really think she should have won the long. I did not think she would skate that well. I thought her over ambition would get the best of her like it has in the past. Mao looks like 2 different skaters to me. The short was beautiful. I just don't like the cut of her LP music. The way she runs in behind the music drives me crazy. I am glad and sad its over. The GP next season is going to be a monster.

I like Yu-Na's LP better than Mao's. Too bad she has to fall twice. Compare Mao and Yu-Na's skating just felt Yu-Na is more polished and mature looks, while Mao still skated like a child, light and delighted, yes. But polish, sofisticated not. Whil Yu-Na shows all of these qualities via her tow programs.

Miki is now a worth champion! And I really like Yucan's style and appealing, wrapped leg on jump not count.

Agree with Peggy that Emily Hughes skated like slow motion.

Still can't get into Kimmie and Carolina's posture in stroking (and some of other elite ladies that I can't get the name out my head of the moment). Fast and powerful? maybe, but why they have to pump their hip while lower their upbody almost to the position to paralle to the ice, gave impression that they have to work hard to gain the speed.
