A CHAMPIONS ON ICE TOUR FAN FAVORITE IS EXPECTING FIRST CHILD

DENVER, Colo. (April 9, 2007) – Two-time Olympic skating medalist Irina Slutskaya today announced that she will not perform in the 2007 Champions on Ice tour because she recently learned that she will be busy with an important off-ice job --- becoming a mother.

Slutskaya, 28, will be staying at her home in Russia during her pregnancy. Slutskaya and her husband, Sergei Micheev, are expecting their first child this fall. Slutskaya married Micheev, a Russian fitness instructor, in 1999.

One of the fan favorites on the tour, Slutskaya will be unable to skate because she continues to be treated for vasculitis, an ailment which results in the inflammation of the blood vessels. Slutskaya decided it was better for her to stay in her native Moscow than to travel and tour in the United States.

Diagnosed in 2004 with vasculitis, Slutskaya has often been too fatigued to stay in top form. However, she somehow managed to train well enough in 2005 to claim her second World Championship title in 2005. She followed that up by winning a bronze medal in the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy.

A seven-time European champion, Slutskaya also won the Olympic silver medal at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

Slutskaya’s fun-loving ways and ever-present smile definitely will be missed by her friends on the tour......

I just read this on another board but there was no link to the article. If it is true good for her she always talked about her desire to have a baby.

No!!

NO!!! I don't want another scandal. Is she having Michelle Kwan's baby???
Too bad I can't watch her show live with hamburger in my hand!!

Anyway, have a nice day and Congratulations to Irina!!

Too funny, iloveaxel. (*raises glass*) Congrats to Irina and best wishes for a happy, healthy pregnancy!
I wonder who'll be replacing her on the tour...
xoxo

oh not again :rolleye: when it's confirmed in a reputable source I'll believe it. (Just too many of these false rumors to believe it initially with no link :p )

2nd that, But if true congratulations and a big bummer I will not see her in May.

congrats to irina. I guess this pretty much means that competing days are over, athough ekaterina Gordeeva competed in and won the 1991 olympics after her daughter was born. I must say i am shocked that irina is healthy enough to have a baby.. all her medications.... i hope that she and the will be OK.

I've heard Irina mention wanting to start a family at least a couple times in interviews on tv, so if it's true, CONGRATULATIONS!

Good news for Ira!!!

I wonder if she will be craving hamburgers instead of pickles...??

Also, I think we can take this as a sign that she's definitely not returning to competitive skating- at least any time soon- she'll have her hands full being a mother ;)

I bet she'll keep skating in shows, though, even if she stays in Russia.

I wasn't certain at first if this was true or not. Now that I see it is, congrats to both Irina & her husband!

Difference between Irina and Katia is that Katia did not have other known health issues before, during and after her pregnancy. The article already mentioned that she had difficulty training. Irina will have to really want to come back in a huge way if she is really considering Vancouver.

However, I am thrilled for her and hubby. I think she's at a great age for having a baby - not too young, got to enjoy travelling, still has lots of energy and exuberance, yet not old enough to be in a high risk range (well - if it weren't for the vascilitus).
