2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

So, next week, it’s Sinitsina vs. Tarakanova in terms of Russian juniors? I honestly can’t say who’ll come out on top. Both were given so-so PCS last season and neither seems to be a federation favorite. I think they are pretty much on an even playing field.

While Maya is considerably weaker than Valieva, and this showing wasn’t very good, you have to consider the fact that she’s RCF champion, and that last year, she was consistent and reliable. Her spins last year were wonderful (the wonky LSp aside), her jumps were consistent, her lines were beautiful. The only problem I have is the Ghost FS, the vocals are horrible. JGP Courchevel took place at an extremely high altitude for FS, when Valieva made a mistake in her SP, people used this excuse, but now when Maya makes a mistake it’s just because she’s terrible and inconsistent?

But anyways congrats to Kamila!!!! Criminally robbed of GOE on her spins.

Almost perfect. I would have given it a 4, only because I think she landed on a flat instead of an edge.
Yeah and maybe a little bit too much bend forward in the waist, plus not perfect fluency in the exit. I take my back, back - 4/5 indeed.

I had a similar feeling. Maiia's jumps did not look good until the test skate, where she showed significant improvement in almost all aspects. But today she regressed probably due to her nerve. I have a feeling she won't stay with Eteri for too long because of her weak jumps, combined with the fact she is already pretty tall at the age of 13.

I really have to agree. Last year when I first saw Maya I was like "How the heck did SHE get into Eteri's school????" I first thought it was Eteri's daughter before I learned Diana is now in ice dance. She has lovely arms that she's starting to know what to do with, but technically she just isn't there. And she's nowhere from a presentation sense either. I'm sure there are a hundred girls who would love to take her place in Eteri's school at the same or higher level than Maya.

I believe Maya deserved a chance and there was plenty of room for her to have an assignment. But I agree with the general sentiment. We can see the favoritism for Eteri skaters in the way they are giving out the assignments and it is bogus.

For example there are 4 Eteri girls and 7 events. They only had to put 2 of them up against each other once. So why did they put Kamila against Maya and then Alena against Daria? Because they wanted to keep their precious Eteri skaters away from Alysa Liu and Chelyabinsk where someone is guaranteed to finish 3rd. So instead they make the Panova/Davydov skaters the sacrificial lambs......again.....even though these girls are skating better and more consistently than Usacheva and Khromykh. The idea was to give the greater risk assignments to the non-Eteri skaters so that Eteri skaters are more likely to make the final. It’s blatant favoritism and it’s garbage.

But now they have to eat their words when winning a silver medal at this sloppy event could not have been easier and their golden girl couldn’t do it. Hopefully this will be a lesson to them. Just because someone is with Eteri doesn’t make them the best nor deserving.

Go GET them Ksenia, Nastya, Anna, and Vika!

They aren't, just look at the results of domestic competition through the last season. No matter how much you try to promote Alysa, she is the most overhyped skater of the decade (at least on american soil) and nobody who is in the same competition as her is a scapegoat more than anybody at any other competition. It is useless to fabricate some pro-Eteri conspiracy and what you call "general sentiment" is your private sentiment (or you share it with two or three similar users) passed off as a general agreement. I don't know what is an englishg proverb for such situation but we say "one swallow doesn't make the spring".

As for Maiia. In thursday there were comments literally closing her whole career, while Maiia was praised. Now it's neraly the opposite, "why Maiia was even sent/her qualities are lower/she doesn't have tech" etc. So much after just one competition. Well she has the tech and we saw her qualities in numerous domestic competition, users praised her interpreattion of music etc. Don't change the narrative just due to 4 minutes. remember Alina's free program at Slovenia. Remember Panenkova's first international free skate at JGP Latvia. Yes, she was golden there byut because other competitors were weak, she had two falls just like Maiia yesterday. Such things happens, I don't understand why some people are so negative after such skate when this happens all the time even to the best. It's not like either you are completely clean or you are nothing as some probably think. All that happened to her was that she was suddenly a leader after SP and she probably wasn't prepared for it. This is just another experience that is sometimes necessary for a skater (or any other athlete), this is not a thing you have from birth, you have to learn how to deal with pressure, expectations. her mistakes weren't caused by her lack of skills but lack of experience. Seoyeong Wi, with all respect, didn't beat her by better techique but by experience with international competitions. Also, Maiia's skate wasn't some cathastrophic skate how it could look from some comments, She would still end aroung 12th-13th place at this year's senior worlds championship :)

Now, we can guess if Maiia gets second entry but as it was said, this year I believe there is not so much choice.

And for those who were panicked about kamila yesterday you learned a very valuable lesson today no doubt.

Congrats kamila on the win. But I wouldn't have thought any less of her even if she did not win and land that quad.

It's going to be a wild year in here things were so intense yesterday just with a Junior Grand Prix event can you imagine what it's going to be like later on in the season when the seniors are fighting for gold? ;)

I am a fan of Valieva's but there is no connection between her choreography/performance to the music at all... I also feel like her short was made much worse this year, but it was beautiful last year in shows/exhibitions.

I think it is difficult when you are worried about the elements. In her case, especially the lutz. In this day and age, with the demands of super high tech, I think skaters who connect to the music/performance are a thing of the past when you are talking about the highest levels of jumps and transitions. As for me, I am astounded by the speed she maintains throughout the program-her conditioning is on another level. Some of the transitions are also on another level, such as the leg lift after the axel. I'm sure as time goes on she will settle into the program, but I think the music is perfect for her style and flow, and I think it is a great program. I think they need to rework the lutz, but in my view, the lutz is her only weak spot.

I rather wonder if she is going to end up being over 6'. Maybe way way over 6'. On warmup those jumps looked great, she just fell apart in the program.

Wow kinda breaks my heart to read what some of you are saying about Maya. I know she had a rough skate, but was she really that bad? Funny thing is, when I watched the event live today I actually thought in the moment that Maya was more of a pleasure to watch than Kamila. I don't really follow Maya too much so she was a nice surprise for me despite the mistakes. I guess I was watching something different than all of you...

I hope she gets another JGP, I can see the potential. Clearly both girls had some issues the past two days, probably due to nerves. It was sad to see them upset, but I hope they are able to grow from it and continue to fight, if given the opportunity (Maya). Bravo to Kamila on a flawless quad and a deserved win and to Maya for medalling and winning the short. I look forward to watching them both again and seeing the improvements I know they are capable of!

Kostornaia, Shcherbakova, Trusova and Kanysheva have all connected to the music IMO. But it's her first event, so maybe it will be better, but I do think the choreography doesn't match the music at all.

This has been mentioned before many times, but they are overdoing it with the leg kicks IMO.

Just a random thought came to mind: If Shcherbakova wins Skate America, which I believe she or Tursynbaeva will definitely do, she can give her winner’s interview in English, endearing herself to an American audience.

Watch some of her exhibition skates, Kamila can rival Kostornaia and Shcherbakova on musicality there; she just needs to work on competitions.

What?

P.S. But only +3 for her spins looks like a crime for me. All her spins should be in +4+5 zone.

This confuses me too. Who spins better?!?!?! She hits all her levels with precision. I don't know, maybe the judges wanted her to really earn it with her jumps today instead of putting her totally out of reach even if she missed her jumps. Who is a better spinner in the world, really?

It might be that her flexibility works against her here. I think some judges are afraid that the sport might develop into super flexible acrobatics, so they don't appreciate her spins because of that.

I think it's just they aren't yet comfortable giving out +5s yet. Since the range became bigger, now there's an opportunity for one of the scoring biases, i.e. neutral responding bias, when people are less inclined to choose extreme values and prefer the middle ones.

What’s all this hate on Maya? So rude! She just had a bad event and you’re all acting like her career is over! And who said she has no presentation? In the short she had better presentation than Kamila and she holds her movements, she doesn’t rush, she has lovely qualities. The whole of last season she was the most consistent out of Eteri’s 3 novices and she just had an injury and should not have been sent to the first event - combined with some nerves and the altitude here, things weren’t bound to go well. After all, she was first in the short too. I think being with Eteri has actually done wonders for her quality. Give her a break and wait and see what happens next. She’s literally 13 years old and this is her first event, I’m sure she got some valuable experience and things will go better next time. I wouldn’t give up on her.
