One day when talking with S/Z about their role in Chinese pair skating, we commented that S/Z paved the way for other chinese pair skaters, S/Z said not only them, their coach Bin Yao and his partner contributed more, they had much bigger challenges and more difficulties as they basically had no references, not even vedios. They recounted a bitter joke: once Yao practiced throw with his partner, he fell very hard on the ice and couldn't get up after throwing his partner. He was wondering why his partner didn't come for rescue only found out that she was suffering cramps from a fall herself on the ice.

What I can say, Yao and S/Z , great people achieved greatness together. I'm going to miss S/Z terribly.

 Who would Yao focuses on more next year, P/T or Z/Z?

I think a more crucial question is what pairs are moving up throught the Chinese junior ranks that will take the place of the Big Three (I mean, the Big Six) in a few years' time?

If he was not focusing on all 3 pairs equally as it was he is not a good coach. That is what a good and fair coach should do, not play favorites. Are you saying he gives preferential treatment to the highest ranked? Well in that case were the Zhangs his favorites last season, since they were the more favored team last season due to Shen/Zhou being hindered by injury and loss of training no matter when they were able to compete.

I've always gotten the impression that Yao Bin is close to all three of his main teams. He certainly does seem very happy when any of them do well. Is he the only pairs coach in China? I would assume he has assistants but he seems to be the only one you ever see at competitions. If he also coaches the junior teams, it's a wonder he can even remember all those names!

A mom loves all her children and try everything possible to let all of them to reach their potential. But when she has to prioritize the tasks or make a choice:scratch:

Looking at the ISU bios for the other current and former Chinese international pairs, the following names other than Bin Yao are listed as coaches:

Yanwei Sha, Luan Bo, Xiao Peng

And as former coaches of any of the pair skaters including the top three, but not necessarily pair coaches:

Chen Xiaofei, Sha Yanwei (presumably the same person listed above as Yanwei Sha), Wenyi Cong, Zhiping Sun, Yu Sun, Q Wang, Bing Huan, Lu Sun

If he also coaches the junior teams, it's a wonder he can even remember all those names!

Why? Would Igor Shpilband, for example, have trouble remembering the names of ten or twelve dance teams that he coaches at any given time?

What about schoolteachers who may have 50-100 students whose names they need to remember in any given year and then switch over to a whole new batch the next year?

It was simply an observation. I don't see how anyone remembers a large amount of names because it isn't something that I am good at.

On behalf of high school teachers everywhere: bless you for noticing! ;) I always make it a priority to know all 140-160 first names on the first day, which is really hard when you have (like I had one time) six Ashleys in the same class! This year, I have two boys who have the same first and last names!!

It wasn't always true that Bin Yao spread his attention equally over his teams: while he focused on Shen/ Zhao, Pang/Tong, trained on their own, in another city, with Tong coaching the team. It's amazing they've gotten as far as they have. Tong!
