2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Smaller fed skaters would have more joy than the #7 Russian lady? I dont buy it.

You don't have to. Simple fact is, you don't speak for non-Russians in general, a lot of whom, especially general fans, DO prefer and cheer for their own, or their neighbours, or even a total but adorable outlier - a variety rather than Tutberidze's girls, and you can't stop them doing so. Any more than you can stop the other feds, if Russia tried to persuade them to vote their own chances out so Tutberidze's girls could swamp the competition, simply rolling virtual eyes and going "get real."

Didn't happen when the US ladies dominated, didn't happen when the Japanese men were so deep (Takahashi's time) and people were making the precise same arguments. Ain't gonna happen now, so the ladies simply have to suck it up and try to be one of the chosen under the rules (and by the way, even if it went to a vote and if it takes as long as usual to change rules, would you be happy to lose Russian spots if by then some other country took over dominance? Not likely I know, but ice is slippery and careers are short...)

Is it certain that Korstotnaia will do her 3A in the FS?

I saw an instagram post of Alena's interview after the SP where she said she will do it in the FS, but is not sure if she will do two 3As or just one.

Video interview with Alexey Nikolayevich Mishin!

Friends, good afternoon!

Yesterday was the first day of the Finlandia Trophy Series B competition, and, as usual, on all resources the confrontation of fans of various skaters flared up with renewed vigour about the results of the ladies short program With even greater frenzy, indefatigable fans undertook to criticise and frankly piss on their rivals and extol their favourites. One would like to say:gentlemen, you behave like animals!

But I won’t say this, I won’t do any ordering if skating runs, I’ll only note the good performances of Russian pairs and Japanese singles at the Finn, as well as Russian athletes at the Denis Ten Memorial tournament in Almaty (even if not everything worked out).

I also congratulate the veteran of the national team Sergey Voronov on the beginning of his next season, and Florent Amodio and Arthur Gachinsky on the beginning (well, not quite the beginning, but they are still not luminaries) of their coaching path, it was very nice to see them in the K&C in Finland and Almaty, respectively.

In addition, it is unfortunate that Elisabet Tursynbayeva and Mai Mihara will not perform at their first stages of the Grand Prix (and possibly in the entire series) for health reasons. I wish these two girls a speedy recovery! It is still unknown who will be substitute for Elisabet in the United States, and instead of Mai, Skate Canada will have Marin Honda on the ice, who has a chance at the second stage of the GP this season.

So, instead of an unnecessary showdown about who has the better Axel or whose edge is wrong, I suggest that you watch in your spare time a completely reasonable and calm interview with the merited trainer of Russia, Alexeiy Nikolayevich Mishin. Maybe before telling the skaters how to fix their wrong edges, should the fans straighten something in their heads and behaviour? Think about it, dear gentlemen, why we somehow recently snickered in the discipline of "women's single skating."

This is so, with our thoughts expressed loudly for all to hear. In the meantime, watch the interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFtGSfcvmlI

So, because we didn't do right thing (change of rules) in the past, we shouldn't do it now...

Well, maybe scott isn't "speaking for non-Russians in general, a lot of whom, especially general fans, DO prefer and cheer for their own," but neither do you speak for them as a whole. On the other hand I think that I do speak for at least a small part of this field. And I can tell you that nothing would make me happy more than to have the opportunity to cheer for the top czech lady at worlds. But this case isn't happening now. I mean nothing against Eliška Březinová, but when I know there are maybe tens of other girls (not just russian) who simply are surpassing her by far and cannot attend high level competition, I feel weird about it (while I have no problem cheering for athletes from other countries who deserve it). World championship should be the meeting of the best of best, it's a top competition of the year. I agree with the comparison to tennis - let the world standings take a role in this. Or winner of the last year would get free entry no matter the number of entries for his country. Or Europeans and 4CC with broader representation of countries (and bigger number of skaters per country) could take place as a qualification for worlds. Or some other model, it could be done many ways.
And still I don't think that some 3 or 4 entries more would prevent other countries (small feds) from attending it, this year we had 7 warm-up groups in ladies, I think that 8 would be still bearable.

We'll have to wait for ISU's promised big media deals and announcements first, which are still forthcoming, as the ISU vs. broadcasters thread shows.

Continental and World Championships and Olympics are ruled differently, here equal chances of participation and commercial interest play a much bigger role and are sort of conflicting. In the interest of renting ice, broadcasting rights etc and getting ticket sales, I don't see any changes coming soon, especially not enlargements.

In gymnastics, numbers of participants have been reduced to shorten competitions, in rhythmic even a hand apparatus was dropped. Who knows it's ISU's secret wish to reduce figure skating too? I don't know what factions exist inside ISU's diverse sub commissions, and wether non-power nations really have anything to add? Voting to make decisions should be according to democratic and transparent principles, and the minutes are public, so one could draw his own conclusion.

For now, figure skating for most countries and for most time of the year is only a fringe sport.

Liza /Mishin surprised with low score nit because of the PCS. They probably knew her PCS wont be high. Its the TES that shock them, she didnt even get 40? in TES. She land all her jump cleanly. Now they should know that Liza get dinged in flip with edge call and lose 2 spins level and step level. Obviously they expect 77~ at least with such a clean skate

77 is still low considering she got 80.54 last year at World Team Trophy with a program that was easier technically and artistically.

I also want to talk about the artistry cause this program does more on that aspect than anything i've seen from her before: steps sequence is much better now, she showed some good clusters, less two foot skating than before. There were some signature Shae Lynn moves you can recognize in other programs like Wakaba's Skyfall free skate.

The transition into her triple lutz is actually very original, difficult and on the music.

You are right TT. I don't speak for everyone and I am a non Russian but I speak for myself and I speak for the excellence in sports and striving to be the best just like in tennis and golf so rankings matter and your results matter most. Set this whole discussion is like a cat chasing its tail so what's the point? To me figure skating is a great sport a beautiful sport but so frustrating in so many ways because it can be so much better was better competitors better competition and better performance is it certainly better judging that I was hoping when they took a Lena back-loaded program away with focus more on my artistry and musicality

The US ladies at their highest point in the 90s didn't have half the depth of the Russians in ladies figure skating and in two years the depth is going to be twice as great.
I saw an instagram post of Alena's interview after the SP where she said she will do it in the FS, but is not sure if she will do two 3As or just one.

Hoping Alyiona just does one because the big year is 2 years from now but I think she will have two triple axels in the next olympic season. 2 trixels in the free skate and at least one quad. With AK1sadvantage over the top skaters in artistry and musicality and beautiful skating once she adds a tougher elements of the next 2 years she could win the gold. I don't think puberty will hit her hard at all and that will be a blessing for her career and her potential at massive upside.

I think there are more realistic solutions that could be introduced before granting extra Worlds spots. The first could be to add one or two more Grand Prix competitions. Finland did a very good job last year – maybe they would agree to it again. That would mean 3 additional spots for Russia and Japan each (this season it'd have been enough for Sima's second spot and 2 for Nastya Gubanova) as well some more spots for smaller federation skaters such as Emmi Peltonen, Kailani Craine etc. whom fans also enjoy watching. I think this solution would benefit both big and small feds if only the money was found.

Wow, she rotates so fast!!

Small, thin and slender, the ideal fast rotator, #TeamDavydov should keep and cherish her, for she will be needed in the future. She's had some breaks due to injury, so perhaps a more fragile skater best not overloaded?

Is Berestovskaya scheduled for a coming stage of Russian Cup? Lisa can win her stage, when there is no Akat'yeva to beat ...

Sof'ya Akat'yeva playing safe in her second stage of the Russian Cup in the short program, no triksel, but posting the superior score of 70.55 that will be the goal for the other contestants to reach up to.

Now we wait for the other contenders for the top spots: Mariya Dmitriyeva from Sankt Peterburg in flight 4 and Adeliya Petrosyan from Khrustalniy in flight 5. But who knows some other excellent skater might sneak in between the favourites?

Just saw her, she was exquisite. 40.11 for TES :clapper:

Edit: Her SP, but unfortunately with alternative music:
