Now time to celebrate the positives!! :yes2:

1) How gutsy of Aliona to go for that 3A in the SP even though it's not yet her "friend"! And she landed it too! She has nerves of steel! :eek: I have no doubt that this experience will allow her to perform the 3A even more confidently in the future. :agree:

2) Aliona has now gotten the highest SP scores of all the Russian ladies this season not once, but twice! :yahoo:

3) Aliona won the SP in her senior GP debut! (Neither Anna nor Sasha were able to do that this season!)

4) How cool is it that both she and her bestie Dasha are leading after the SP?! I'm thrilled for them! :cool2:

I went from being thrilled that Aliona had a good practice, to practically ill from nervousness as the SP began, to :hap57: that Aliona pulled off a clean program with a monster 3A, to :devil: at the scores, and then finally :confused: What a bizarre event!

For the life of me, I cannot understand where the UR call on the 3A came from. :unsure: Yes, the solo one at Finlandia definitely looked UR on the replay, but I just do not see it at all here.


The height that Aliona got was just insane--in the first gif you can see her knees above the boards! :shocked:
In fact, I think that was actually why she had trouble with the landing--it had TOO much height and she couldn't control the landing.

Unfortunately, if she does have a really swingy landing like that (and that seems to happen a lot), the tech panel is definitely going to take a close look.

I wish that Aliona wouldn't do her 3As so close to the corners. She inevitably has to swing herself around (curve sharply) on the landing to avoid running into the boards, but I feel like that makes it look like she's underrotating rather than riding out a fully-rotated jump on a tight curve. :yes:

As for the lutz, to me it did look like her blade rolled a bit inward during the take-off on the replay, so I can understand the ! call.

As for the rest of the program--compared to Finlandia, it was clear that Aliona was very nervous at the beginning. To me, she was tight/clearly focusing on the jumps instead of the performance (compared to how amazing she can be) until she got past the lutz, and then it was simply marvelous, sublime skating! :love: That 3F+3T!! :eek: The step sequence also looked better here and she was selling it!!

I agree with everyone that Aliona's PCS should've been higher, but her program overall was not as perfect and effortless as at Finlandia, and skating in the 1st group probably didn't help her. It will be interesting to see what the PCS look like tomorrow when she and Alina skate back-to-back.

If Aliona is pissed about the scores, I actually think that's a GOOD thing. I think if she's mad, she won't be nervous at all; she'll just SLAY SLAY SLAY that program and the judges will have no choice but to reward her!! :cheer2:

100% agree with everything.

In an interview she said “I thought I skated well but the judges did not seem to agree”. What a polite way to put it. Though, she also said she wouldn’t make excuses, I mean she is a perfectionist, so before blaming judges for anything of course she will turn to her own abilities, what she can control.

I hope tomorrow her skate is so unmistakably clean that the poor judging cannot even be entertained. I mean, not that it was necessarily entertained here, but it is easier to dismiss because of the iffy landings and edge call. But, if someone gives her anything in the 7’s again for performance, esp. in the “interpretation of the music” category, I’m going to scream.

The US judge did give her PCS of 35.80, and the Austrian judge gave her PCS of 38.20 and an overall score of 82.16, so at least some of the judges know what's what! Bless them! :bow:

Alena Kostornaia, unlike the companions of training and historic opponents Alexandra Trusova and Anna Shcherbakova, debuted in the grand prix winning the first race segment of her stage, but of the three young Russian is the only one who left for real with the amaro in Mouth.

Just kidding. I haven‘t posted in Aliona‘s thread until now because I was anxious I would jinx her for tomorrow but I‘m still going to do it now. What an incredible SP. She was nervous and visibly so and yet still managed to skate like this. How she saved that 3A, even doing a falling leaf out of it. What a queen. I just hope she can have a skate she‘s happy with tomorrow, regardless of placing and scoring.
 
I hope she can skate as free as possible tomorrow without too many nerves... she seems to love her Free Program!!
 
looking for honest opinion on the 3a call. i'm no technic expertise on the rotation stuff. i have seen some people post screenshot says it's 90 degree under-rotation, but i just don't feel like my knowledge is enough to make the call.

also regarding her pcs, i think it's mostly due to she was in the first group and it's also her senior gp debut, as long as she does well in the free, i think it will rise in next competition.
 
I trust Aliona not to get discouraged and continue to nail those beautiful 3As of hers. Go rock the fs today, girl!

There are a number of appropriate anagrams to be made out of that! Let us hope they bring in a completely new set of judges for the FS.

Thank you ... it's a bit odd ... that even the russian judge gives her low PCS ... Only AUS and USA(:eeking:) give her goods PCS ... well RF must be pushing zagitova ... that's the only explanation ...

Her next assigment is NHK if she wins here ... it will be very hard to zagitova to be in the final ... because with the 2 place of Rika she needs a win or at least a 2 place ... kostornaia with a 3A that anuls Rika advantage ... and rika has home ice advantage

Oh, a pity. I wondered about that.
You would think that the formal introduction of the panel to the spectators would rule out any overt nefarious behaviour.
