2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Wow. I don‘t check the forum for one day and when I come back it feels like the entire skating world has changed...

did she say exactly why she isn't competing? or anything regarding her hip?

it does smell a bit like retirement...and i really do think the way she worded things sounds like she's having motivational issues. i hope for all the best for her!

Well, she certainly struggled to find the right words and phrases. Never this public speaker, of course she wanted her words to sound powerful and convincing, no cue sheet or autocue, she spoke unaided. The host handled the declaration very well, sensing how close the tears were. Leaving the initiative to Alina, asking for confirmation, never becoming patronising or sentimental in the presence of the girl.

And no doubt Alina must have felt very relieved when done, this tougher than any competition public declaration.

There are probably a few questions still unanswered, but Alina stated her decision and wishes as authoritatively as she possibly could at 17 years.

And again, addressing the nation on the main news takes a huge lot of courage. And it the right and proper way, nobody can cast any doubt now.

She knows that she has no chance vs the other 3 this season. She will try to learn a triple axel and/or a quad and, if she succeeds, she will be back. If not, she probably won’t.

A Croatian channel filmed Golden Spin and a YouTube user “Frida340” uploaded many of them. I do not know if she uploaded Liza’s FS, but she uploaded the exhibition. There is a Fancam of Liza’s SP by YouTube user “K”.

I can’t link because I am on my mobile, but the Donovan Carrillo and Jason Brown FanFests have their performances from Golden Spin from these users, so you can link to the YouTube accounts there.

Thank you! Sadly, no FS there :/

I have feeling that this will go the way of Sotnikova, I will be very happy if I will be proven wrong but...

P.S Eteri, close your IG page :D

It cannot go the way of Sotnikova because Alina actually competed internationally after her OGM. And with success. And with less, or at least very different questions asked about her gold medal.

There are not many Olympic Champions that are as pretty and attractive as Alina. Katarina Witt was of course. And she made a lot of money not just from her skating.

And she also returned to competitive skating after a break, BTW :)

I hope that whatever decisions Alina makes make Alina happy. She has worked hard and if she wants to retire or take a break that is her right. Maybe she will find her motivation and once she is healed then she will make a glorious comeback in time to defend her OGM. If she does fantastic. If she moves on then I wish her the best and all the happiness in the world. She seems like a lovely young lady. Maybe she wishes to go to University or model or pursue some kind of entertainment career. Who knows. But whatever she decides we, as her fans, should support her and wish her well.

By the way: I have always thought it was terrible karma to root for anyone to fall so my favourite could win. When I was a newer fan in '88 I never rooted for B/B to fall but I did want K/P to defeat them. I feel like I am still doing penance for that now. Never wish failure on others. Only wish for greater success for your favourites.

As did Yuna Kim. Another lovely OGM who took time off and came back to competitive skating.
I remember Katerina in '94. She did a lovely program honouring Sarajevo where she won her first OGM.

Katarina came back after a 6-year break because she had a big motivation to return. She wanted to represent Germany for the first time at the Olympics after the reunification.
I hope Alina can also find a new motivation.

Alina has the power to make choices about her own path, and that's a great thing. It's definitely not easy to come back after time away, but it can also be hard to make such a big life adjustment. Whether she chooses to skate in the future or not, she doesn't have anything to prove. I hope she finds her time away fulfilling. I didn't get the sense that she was enjoying herself this season.

One doesn't know how this season will end, how next season will go for any of the Khrustalniy skaters (or the other Russian top skaters). There could be vacancies due to injury, retirement amongst Aleksandra, Anna and Alyona, Kanysheva might never return, even the 2006 born girls aren't certain of being in contention come 2022 OG. There is still a chance for Alina to represent Sambo-70 in major competitions, if she wants to.

Sotnikova competed after her OGM, too. She won a bronze on the Grand Prix--Cup of Russia, I think.

One thing that does not make sense to me is the editing part. If the ex managers goal was to ruin Liza's reputation why did they edit the video a few minutes after it got backlash due to the Zhenya clips? Wouldn't they want to keep the controversial clips in if they wanted to tarnish her reputation as much as possible?
Hmm.. will probably never get solved completely. She also apologized to Evgenia and TAT, so I will just move on for now.

20 minutes until Alina's interview!!!

You asked questions that Liza does not want to answer. the ex manager is to blame but like you pointed out who know why was everything edited after that? Hmmm.

Is Alina taking time off just to get a break or is her hip injury causing this? If Alena or Anna cannot make Euros or worlds for some reason then Alina needs to be ready to go. I hope she keeps her head in the game. I also hope she enjoys her shows had all the love and fun that will come from them.

Why does Alina need to be ready to go? Liza or Evgenia can go, the Russian team has enough depth that they don't need Alina.

Wow, Alina's short program to "Me Voy" in Turin seems even more iconic now. I didn't like that program or get it initially (moreover, I don't even consider myself Alinas's fan) but it has grown on me a lot. As I watched her skating it in the GPF - skating as the last competitor, lonely on so many levels, most experienced, almost the oldest one, with her unique baggage - it was moving and dramatic. But now it feels somehow symbolic.
There are skates which are like a whole story, with plot twists, ups and downs and drama, like Sasha Cohen's Olympic Romeo and Juliet. I feel that Alina's "Me Voy" will be very close to it.
