They were were warned about making these virus outbreaks in 2003 when they made SARS-CoV. Now they made SARS-CoV 2. And still they are only termperarily closing their wildlife meat markets???
Its time for the UN and the WHO to shut down this crap. Permeantly. All around the world.

I watched the 30 day lock-down video. Thanks! I've been following the situation for a while. This virus really needs to be taken seriously, but it can be controlled if everybody put their effort in. I'm both disappointed and relieved at the same time when the World is cancelled. This is the right decision. Still sad that I can't watch S/H's fabulous performances in person---they are in super strong condition, watched videos of their practice programs, world record level performances! Such a pity. They are in Canada and had been here practicing for 5-weeks; the whole team isolated themselves and cooked for themselves to avoid any possibility of getting the virus. All the effort is now down to the drain.
However it's better to avoid skaters and their teams, judges and officials, and fans getting sick. Also it's wise to avoid the risk of imported virus cases and spread of the disease. May the virus be contained worldwide soon and everybody be safe!

Fingers crossed it’s not till the end of the calendar year but one year after the date of travel... given that we don’t know what is going to happen any more. Anyway, it’s tomorrow’s business.

This was the right decision, but I'm still bummed. I took several days off work next week to spend in on here with y'all watching skating, so I have no idea what to do with myself. /whining

It’s misguided to believe that the US is better equipped to deal with this pandemic than Italy (one of the world’s best healthcare systems).

I don't think it is good to blame any country or group of people. However, it is interesting that most new viruses come out of China and not other countries with high populations and close proximity to animals (i.e. India). I would imagine wildlife markets are a big part of the reason this occurs. Hopefully, people will decide for themselves ( without authoritarian force) that these types of markets just aren't a good idea. They are bad for wildlife populations and for human health.
Most countries that are handling this outbreak well have dealt with deadly outbreaks before...( for instance, Taiwan where I live) and Canada (a country that was affected by SARS) is doing better than most Western Countries likely because of lessons learned the hard way. It is sad that countries/ people generally don't learn from the previous mistakes of others and, usually, have to suffer severe consequences themselves before taking action but that seems to be the case. Hopefully, the United States and Europe learn from this experience.

True, many viral outbreaks originate from zoonotic transmission (animal-to-human).
2003 SARS (bat-->civet/other wildlife-->human)
MERS (bat-->camel-->human)
Ebola (bat-->human directly, or via many other animals that are food or pets)
H1N1 (pigs-->human)
H5N1 (birds-->human)
Current virus outbreak (bats-->various wildlife, maybe pangolin?-->human)
Bats are a common reservoir (their weird immune system has evolved to let them collect many viruses that lie dormant in their system till triggered). But usually some other animal serves as a vector for transmission to humans. The other animal doesn't have to be "exotic" or of wild origin (e.g. pigs, chicken), and not necessarily food (e.g. livestock or pets).
Not just bushmeat, but animal contact in general is an issue. We could all become vegans and forgo pets (not personally appealing ideas to me), but some compromise in terms of restricting live animal markets/regulating farming conditions might help.

^I have been wondering the same about India. It's just as overpopulated and much dirtier than China, but has not had any widespread diseases emerge from it yet.

Yes, I assume that is the reason. You might get food poisoning in Indian but you aren't likely to be eating any strange meat. ( or any meat... on a recent trip I believe I ate meat once during the entire two week period). The wildlife markets in China, on the other hand, are full of creatures that I hope I never have to eat.

Some important differences between Asian countries/Canada vs Europe/US currently (from what I can observe):
-ability and willingness to carry out widespread screening
-surveillance and contact tracing
-restriction of movement (easier for nations surrounded by water or having low population density)

Yes, I think contact tracing is hugely important. Singapore and Taiwan are extremely good at this. They share small land masses and have well functioning publicly funded healthcare as well as very compliant populations. Most importantly, though, in my opinion, is that they were both hit hard by SARS and, thus, had excellent plans in place to cope with future outbreaks.

Not all compulsory figures competitions had a lack of audience. Much less than SP and LP but definitely not without audience.
You do realize it has nothing to do with the brexit, but something called Schengen. Right?
But doesn't coronavirus spread through air? I don't think eating meat has anything to do with it.
