I just caught up with the ladies test skates and it‘s so good to see skating again!

At the last Junior Nationals Petrosyan and Osokina stood out to me and I was looking forward to seeing them. But it seems Petrosyan is injured and had to miss it? :(

The skating itself was better than I expected in terms of the technical stuff. They all seem to have their jumps restored and no one really bombed their program. Of course, the overall readiness is a far cry from where it was at this point last year but with the guaranteed lack of international competitions in the first half of the season, this shouldn‘t be an issue.

Osokina:
I love her and am happy that the special quality I saw last year already is still there. She just has that charm and spark and personality that makes a skater fun to watch. Also, her speed and ice coverage is absolutely insane - the way she glides across the ice is totally effortless and makes it look as if she was flying. She can improve on the spins, though, imo at least. She doesn‘t seem to be very flexible and substituted flexibility with unique positions but some of them look awkward. She might have been better off doing the regular positions but focusing on centering and speed. Still, top notch, that one and definitely my favorite.

Khromykh:
One thing she always had that‘s even more pronounced now are her great lines. She has beautiful, soft arms and I loved how she used them in this program. That one transition into the 3Lz was also very cool. I like her 2A, too, but I prefer it without the rippon for some reason. She also seems more mature and confident in her skating, which is a great development! However, I do have to say that I find the music really problematic, it almost seemed inappropriate. I get what they were trying to do with it (show her maturity and artistic growth) but the music along with the choreography made it look like they were trying too hard. It was a little uncomfortable to watch. But again, not Maiia‘s fault - I find her skating more enjoyable than last season and am hoping for a fitting FS.

Frolova:
Well, I always prefer to say little about Anna because I fear that what I will say, might come across as mean. The thing is - I just don‘t remember too much about her. I know that I liked the music and that she had problems on her jumps but that‘s about it. I‘m sure she‘s a nice, hardworking girl but so far, there‘s just not a lot that makes her stand out. At least in my eyes.

Samodelkina:
3A+3T! Wow. Congrats on restoring it that quickly, definitely very impressive. She also has a softness and musicality about her skating that I really like. However - and this has always been my problem with her - her posture just drives me crazy and makes me enjoy her skating less. Posture is one of the most important, aesthetic parts in skating for me, so the way she sort of hunches her back and pulls up her shoulders during her jumps is just painful to watch. I really, really hope they‘ll work on this because otherwise she has many lovely qualities.

Usacheva:
That was one classic Daniil program if I ever saw one. Drama, pantomiming and transitions that are there for the sake of it, not because they‘re particularly aesthetically pleasing. And.. I still liked it. I don‘t know why but there is something about Daria that makes me enjoy watching her, even when I absolutely hate her programs. I think this one is better than last season‘s (both of them) and it could create some nice moments when she polishes it some more and skates it cleanly. But some things just irk me - like that transition into the 2A. Her legs aren‘t stretched, her foot isn‘t pointed and it just looks sloppy. The program isn‘t even that terrible - it‘s just that it doesn’t do justice to the musicality and artistic potential Daria could show. And yes, it annoys me.

Muravyeva:
She has a nice lutz, one of the few with a real deep outside edge. But the program did absolutely nothing for me. I don‘t remember too much about it other than a lot of frantic movements and lots of arm gestures. It actually stressed me out quite a bit lol.

Overall, reading through my post again, this might seem quite negative, which I didn‘t intend. It is, of course, absolutely incredible what these girls managed to do in such a short amount of time and I‘m looking forward to seeing their progress throughout the season. :)

I still don‘t understand why Kamila isn‘t here, though. Senior test skates is for those who get senior GPs. Kamila has absolutely no business being there, other than the fed wanting to prop her up as their next star, unnecessarily putting a 14 year old under immense pressure. She should have been left alone to just skate at junior test skates like every other junior this season and every other junior before her. Evgenia, Alina, Sasha, Anna, Aliona ... they all skated at senior test skates only when they were senior eligible and it didn‘t hurt any of them. Kamila is talented enough, she doesn‘t need favoritism, in fact, it might actually do her more harm than good.

I don't know how about Liza, but sometimes it looks Mishin is very surprised by the fact that bad layout costs Liza plenty of points.

It's not a normal open skates thanks to the pandemic and because of that that allows kamila to be there.

Thank you for your analysis and input on each skater. Maybe there won't be another three days but there's so many good Russians coming up it's unbelievable.

According to your report the girls are skating very well already which is unbelievable because they didn't skate literally for 3 or 4 months.

This was probably already answered but I haven’t been in the forum in a while. Does Alina going to school mean she will not compete this season or are we not sure still?

I think many skaters combine university with competitive skating. Alina’s program isn‘t the regular sports related one many athletes in Russia choose, so I don‘t know whether and how this might affect her. But a long time ago, Daniil said the music for her programs was already chosen and there have been no news on her missing test skates, so I assume she‘ll compete.

Osokina was the only one that I wasn't familiar with, but overall, she was the best today considering technical and artistic parts. Her jumps were my favorite actually, effortless and with nice air position. Besides, the program was very fun.

Khromykh had the best program of all, IMO. Fits her much more than the ones from last year. And she was much more confident, even looked ready to become a senior.

Nothing that Alina shouldn't skate this season was announced so far, she is the part of national team and according to previous announcements her programs are done, she attends trainings. So unless there would be direct information she will miss the season I consider her a competitor. After all, university study by nature allows much more individual attendance and plan of study than the high school study.

Finally watched the test skates.

I fell in love with Osokina's skating last season, so I am not surprised that she outskated them all today. She is a firecracker. Those transitions into her jumps. Sublime.

I personally do not like the choreo for Daria, it did not match the music. Her programs last season were better constructed.

Last year-at Junior nat'ls, Osokino was practically jumping over the barriers during the practices and warmup. But she tenses up in competition. I hope now that she trains in Moscow she will gain more confidence in her natural ability, and be able to show what she is capable of doing. Perhaps this is where Eteri girls excel-they all skate with such confidence, almost always. Last year Osokino was better in the smaller competitions, I think perhaps she wasn't as nervous, there was less at stake.

I feel so bad for Sophia S. this year-after all the waiting, this would have been her debut on the Junior Grand Prix, and I'm pretty sure she would have been 1 or 2 depending on which JGP's Valieva and Liu were competing in. It must be a huge disappointment for her. She looked pretty solid today, but does need to watch out for a habit of dropping her head before she jumps.

I thought all 6 had lovely skating skills, just a few hiccups here and there which is to be expected given the lack of ice time this year.

Daria's program was terrible and once again doesn't fit her. I'm upset. It's also obvious that Daniil/Eteri have no clear vision for her, unlike Kamila, (maybe Maiia), and 3A in the past.

What a shame. Her SS, arms, posture, etc. is far ahead of her peers, yet this program just seems like Danny G scraps.

The 2A transitions are the most confusing and I hope it's changed. It is not aesthetically pleasing or executed well at all. She had a beautiful and well executed 2A transition last season. I would've considered Daria's 2A (the complete jump: transition in-jump-transition out) only second to Aliona's last season.

Samodelkina is getting better and better, her arms were beautiful, didn't care much about her before, but was mesmerized by today's skate.
Khromykh finally started to perform, smile, express the program and what a lovely young lady she is! Spins were meh though...
Usacheva's jumps are work in progress it seems, except of that majestic 2A, which amazes me every single time. She mastered this cheap element to perfection.
Osokina - very good jumps, lively and energetic, but I think there is only so much talent. Muravieva and Frolova were quite mediocre I think.

I think in their heads they have a vision for her - dramatic female character. It’s been her recurrent theme.

Such a petty that this program sucked so much, because Daria is phenomenal.

Again, Danny G’s fault for using recycled movements from everyone else’s programs, including Alina’s 0,5 second ina bauer.

If her parents feel the same way you do she will be out the door the next transfer period too. It's not possible for one coach one specialist coach and when choreographer to give everybody an equally as great program to skate. I just hope it's not as bad as you say it is and that Daria can make something good of it.

Fully agree. When she did that move where she pretends that she is coughing up blood to demonstrate her having tuberculosis like the character in MR, I really wanted to fly to Moscow to have a talk with Daniil.

Ok! I personally think school and athletics is a great combination, as student-athletes usually excel at both. I hope she skated this season!

It's definitely not bad ;)
Daria was nervous and made a mistake in 3F+3T combo, but I liked the way she was performing. In fact it was similar a little to how she looked at the beginning of the last season, uncertain a little, probably meeds more practise to look as confident as in the end of the last season. Also as I've said before, she may have been affected by the fact that Kamila moved to senior test skates and she was suddenly the No. 1 in the event as the reigining junior worlds silver medalist. She may not be used to it.

I hope in that too. Of course if she decides she won't skate we would have to respect that (but that's a phrase, I would be sad actually, I confess :) )

Daria wasn't that bad. She made small mistakes which are normal for a performance in August.

However, the choreo is truly "that bad. " Imho Daria is more musical and a better performer than all the other juniors (including Valieva), but the choreo for her is such a miss. Last year, the song was very heavy and dark and not appropriate for her age. This year, the choreo is absolutely unconnected to the music, and it is ugly. It is hard to make a beautiful skater like Daria look ugly on the ice, but somehow this choreo accomplishes that.
