I don't think Evgenia's bronze was a lucky win at all. In the short program, she got an underrotation call on her 3T, which was not under and other skaters with glaring underrotations were not called. In the free , she did have a call on her 2A which was true, but others were not called. So she was not gifted. And both of her performances were great. I don't even like her tango program, but at Worlds she sold it and I've rewatched it probably a hundred times.
Ermmm spins that travelled a lot getting +5's should be noted? FCCsp

According to the Allskaters database Varvara Kisel trains in Sochi in Alexei Urmanov's group. Could someone confirm this? If so, it's nice that more coaching teams are emerging with competitive elements, especially from outside Moscow/St Petersburg.
Varvara Kisel qualified for the Junior Russian Nationals last season but she withdrew. Maybe it was because she was changing nationality?

I guess you are refering to (there were a lot of videos going around at the time) why Medvedeva's 3T was called under when Mariah Bell's wasn't in the short? There was a lot of people complaining about that. Imo, Bell's 3T was fine, it was just shaky. She was wobbling left and right on her landing which made it look UR, but it was fine (imo that is).

Didn't know that Skate Canada with Trusova, Kihira, Tennel, Young You, Yelim Kim and co. is not "packed".

Zhenya had the 6th highest SB last season (225) and only skaters who have ultra-C elements (3A, Kamila and Rika) managed to beat that last season. Even with her messed up SP but great FS at Skate Canada she would have medaled bronze at Cup of China and Skate America with her total score, with the extremly packed Skate Canada it was only 5th. She was in fact at some of the most packed events last GP season. She would have been placed much higher at different events. Btw Zhenya's SB of 225 last season was higher than her SB during her 2015-2016 season, when she won Worlds, which so many love to quote her as one of her best seasons.
I don’t know how fair it would be to compare her scores from 15-16 to 19-20, there’s always some natural inflation over the years + Medvedeva’s reputation has grown compared to her debut season to give her a PCS cushion. Not only that, but Rostelecom also happened to happen on home turf, which I think really helped that score.
people saying her scores “dropped” in 18-19 and 19-20 often forget that there were scoring system changes, which her program content was really dependent on. Her SP bv was comparable to others with Lz+F bv, because she backloaded all jumps + did tano on all of them. Same in the free. With that advantage removed in 2018, her competition didn’t have to play catch up in BV anymore, Evgenia and others were artificially held back in their BVs.

Zhenya has never been my favorite skater. However, I think she is a lovely human being. I also respect her obvious love of figure skating, and that makes her injury all the more tragic. It is difficult to accept when our bodies don't have the same strength as our minds.

I do think my favorite performance of Med was from 2019 Rostelecom. She (Mariah Bell, Satoko Miyahara)brought a performance quality to the ice that was a bit lacking from some of the other skaters there and technically it was her best performance since 2016.

Of course Med was overscored at 2019 Worlds, but so were all the other women who ended up on the podium, and quite a few skaters who didn't end up on the podium also had technical errors overlooked. I am not sure why we need to rehash it now.

OK. Predictions for the weekend:

1. Valieva (she will probably get 6 bonus points for her spins which Trusova can't catch, she needs to be superclean though)
2. Trusova (it will probably be very close, if she lands ALL her quads she wins)
3. Usacheva
4. Frolova
5. Konstantinova (I am really excited to see her again!)
6. Talalaykina (I would LOVE it if she ends up higher, but realistically...well, go Maria!)
7. Sidorova (has she improved from last year? maybe she can be an upset?)
8. Onishchenko
9. Sarnovskaya

Did I miss anyone?

My dream podium would be Valieva, Trusova and Talalaykina, but that won't happen...

Do we know how many she'll go for?

I predict:
1 Trusova
2 Valieva
3 don't know but hoping for Konstantinova :)

Me too remember liking Talalaykina at first stage.

Anyway it'll be exciting. GO all!

This basically. The judging in Saitama was really bad and the tech panel for the ladies was awfully lenient. Not fair to single out Zhenya, especially as she actually had some URs called.

I hope she just does three - and I'm interested in seeing if she has practiced a 3A.
She's through to russian nationals no matter what content she does, so she has choices. She could even skate conservatively with just one quad if she wanted and play it safe, or she could go for more and make mistakes and qualify.

On the one hand this is the time to experiment with layouts where it matters a little less for trusova.
On the other hand cup of Russia isn't worth getting injured for

I would say if she lands all her jumps. There may be a situation where she lands all quads, but falls a couple of times from the triples, then it will be difficult to win. And I wonder how Sasha is doing with triple axel, because a clean 3A in SP can neutralize all Kamila bonuses for spins.

P.S. Am I the only one who thinks that the bonus system for quads and spins should have been canceled this year? This year the Russian Cup is a selection for the Nationals, where there are no bonuses and this system only increases the gap between the strongest skaters and the second-tier skaters

Sound reasoning, I'd say (y)
