Miki Ando is skating to CARMEN

so why are you talking about the Japanese baseball drafting?? I don't think it has anything to do with figure skating or am I missing something?

IMO, Morosov's choreography has been "same old same old" since his groundbreaking work for Yagudin. He's a one-trick pony, which is why they all look the same and the music cuts are the same.

WHY do so many skaters insist on skating to Carmen? Is it simply that they do no have a range of music education? Someone, please enlighten me.

Because it's dramatic and it has booms, crashes, etc, in just the right places and is WAY too easy to choreograph something to...... It's kind of like "The Go To Music Selection For Lazy Thinkers" in this department....

Does anyone remember Irina's interpretation of "Carmen" during the 99-00 season (her "comeback" year?)?? Now THAT was an interesting, original take on an old warhorse....

Carmen again
BAd things about using same old piece, if you do well, then fair for you.
If you did not do as well as the previous skaters did, then you shall be doomed.....

Carmen is great music and very skateable, I never get tired of it. Of course it would feel different if every skater in a competition would skate to it, LOL. Otherwise I have nothing against so-called old warhorses....

:disagree: :disapp:
Miki Ando is skating to CARMEN for her lp

I'm wondering if ISU rules allow judges to take into consideration the music when awarding scores. For example, if a skater picked a really unusual piece, could the judge reward the skater for innovation in music? Conversely, if a skater skates to overused music, can the judge allow that to influence their scores. I'm wondering why skaters, whether international or just lower-level US still continue to use the same old boring overused music. It may be good skating music but I can't believe that they and their coaches and federations are not aware of just how stale that gets. Thoughts?

Absolutely! And don't forget that beautiful guitar piece... Heck, she could skate to Walk Like An Egyptian and I'd prefer that to Carmen...

i do remember someone suggesting she skate to baby got back.

'i like big butts and i cannot lie you other brothers can't deny

At this rate, one of these years, one of these competitions, it's actually gonna happen.... It'll be like a really long, elaborate compolsury dance competition....

I'm thinking that in the pre-CoP days, there HAD to be a judge or two who may have marked a skater down on the Artistic mark for musical choice. I know that in the last several years, I've seen a lot of programs that had I been a judge under 6.0, I'd've marked down 0.1 or 0.2 for "annoying" music. After all, not only do you have to sit there and watch the program, you gotta sit there and listen to the music as well and if you're gonna select something that drives me nuts.... May not be fair, but that's how I feel about it. Under CoP, I'm not sure how easy it would be to do this kind of thing now.

Again, skaters have to skate for the judges and I would be a small amount of money (more if I had it) that it's easier to judge a program set to very familiar music than one set to music you've never heard before.

What a great idea! just two minutes each though. All those Carmens would drive one up a wall.

We would have to have different divisions!

Dying Carmen division
Flirtatious Carmen division
Manipulative Carmen
Young pre-teen girls who think they can identify with a harlot Division
Carmen is just background music as I jump and cross off elements division

And that's just ladies

I wish Miki would bring back "Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence".

That's my favorite program ever from Miki -- the one time I've felt some strong emotions coming out of her. I'd love to see her do a long program with a similar theme.

:rofl::rofl::biggrin:

then of course there will be the:

Toreodors
Don Jose's
Jumpers who take advantage of the creshendos and dramatic moments in the music.
Guys who just play with the music like Plushenko did at the 2002 olympics and not choose a charachter event.

You forgot Diva Carmen which I would say is an overly dramatic mixture of the top three, with an unfortunate possibility of the fourth as well.
