Miki Ando is skating to CARMEN

Carmen again
BAd things about using same old piece, if you do well, then fair for you.
If you did not do as well as the previous skaters did, then you shall be doomed.....

I think it is even more difficult to interpret a piece that has been used over and over because the possibilities of being original decrease over time. I think most people are not creative enough to choreograph something new with old music.

I'm wondering if ISU rules allow judges to take into consideration the music when awarding scores. For example, if a skater picked a really unusual piece, could the judge reward the skater for innovation in music? Conversely, if a skater skates to overused music, can the judge allow that to influence their scores. I'm wondering why skaters, whether international or just lower-level US still continue to use the same old boring overused music. It may be good skating music but I can't believe that they and their coaches and federations are not aware of just how stale that gets. Thoughts?

I think in the Canadian interpretive tests that applies.

Carmenmania!!!!!!!!!!!!

:rofl::rofl::biggrin:

then of course there will be the:

Toreodors
Don Jose's
Jumpers who take advantage of the creshendos and dramatic moments in the music.
Guys who just play with the music like Plushenko did at the 2002 olympics and not choose a charachter event.

the scary thing is, i can find vids for each one of your divisions! LOL

don't forget in pairs, dance, and perhaps the singles:

i want to hide my skating skills behind my overly dramatic facial expressions division:

or the--

I can make cool-looking arm and leg movements that mean nothing division

i hope miki comes up with something new...than these carmens, don jose's, toreadors, death cards, bulls, etc (oh, of course, Julia Sebestyen's [buried deep in here] where she plays both toreador and carmen!):

Yikes, I can already imagine the choreography and movements already. When you can already predict the moves by a skater, than that's not a good sign.

Honestly, I really did think Ando was developing as a Artistic Skater 2 years ago with her Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, and My Funny Valentine programs. Very original selections, and had me really engaged. Oh well...whatever works to get those triple-triples knocked out.

Carmen isn't that big a deal if you attend major championships, when it might be played, at most, a handful of times across over two hundred performances, especially since they cut the repeats of the LP during compulsories.

Listening to three cuts of "Yankee Polka" music in a CD over 20 competitors is a lot more grating, IMO.

I'd much rather listen to Carmen, which is pretty much indestructible, than a beautiful piece of music destroyed by musical cuts.

when I looked at the list of people who skated to Carmen I say...please someone leave this music dead at the end of their program on center ice!!

Again, skaters have to skate for the judges and I would be a small amount of money (more if I had it) that it's easier to judge a program set to very familiar music than one set to music you've never heard before.

"Done to death" and "never heard it before" are not the only 2 choices available. Unless most judges are hopelessly ignorant about art music, numerous works exist that are familiar but not overused.

Prokofiev wrote a lot more than R&J, for example. I like Prokofiev. But could we please hear a different selection?

And Shostakovich wrote 15 symphonies, not just the 5th (which I am not sure I've seen used in awhile). Incidentally, he wrote suites and piano concertos and all sorts of other nifty stuff. Some of the pieces are obscure, but most would not produce confusion in a musically well informed person.

Inoue/Baldwin used Shostakovich's 5th in their LP in the Olympic season. (I think with a cut from "Bright Stream.")

In August I went to the Hackensack Ice House for the Moran Memorial Competition. Miki came to the arena late in the afternoon to take a lesson with Nikolai. This is when I found out that she was skating to Carmen. ( I didn't mention it on the skating boards because I don't know the protocol for these things).

I don't know if it was the black leggings and leotard practice clothes, her new mature looks, or her relaxed mood, but she made an absolutely breathtaking, sexy Carmen.

Wow, you are lucky to see her. I am so glad that she is looking good. how did her jumps look? quad? I think that she would actually make a pretty good Carmen. Got to be better than Mao's!

Great. Although I am not a big Miki fan, I think Carmen will suit her well. I also heard she now has much better extension than last year. Hope she will stay injury-free in rest of her career. She has already gone though many injuries/melt-downs in her short career.

Bad fall for Miki at the Int'l Countermatch over the weekend. Hope it's not going to result in any serious injuries.

I also think that she could make a good Carmen. If she could put some originality in it, it may surprise us positively.
