2020-21 Russian Men's figure skating

He also said, that the ice cream brand (Chistaya Linia) didn’t contact him... yet. 😆
He seriously deserves an endorsement! I looked for their ice cream when I went to a grocery store that specializes in Russian products, and was disappointed because they didn't have them 😭 He must be inspiring a lot of people around the world, thanks to the world wide exposure this season :hap10:

Oh no, Ilya missed the podium :( As feared the blow to his morale from lack of Chistaya Linia was too great...

But Egor medalled, yay! Great comeback season for him :D

Junior nationals were definitely a bit lackluster compared to this year's seniors/last year's juniors. I don't know whether it's because of the weird season, bad luck with injuries or the fact that Gumennik, Mozalev, Danielian et al. are exceptionally talented and just moved up from juniors. Hopefully the new junior cohort will gain polish and consistency with time.

Ugozhaev was great here not sure if i agree with him being behind Rukhin but still 5th place was a big step-up for him.

Semenenko finally getting his medal, he definitely worked hard for this, i noticed big improvements in the past 2 seasons.

In the SP judges tried to make the return of Samsonov happen but it didn't work cause the 3a isn't there nor are the quads.

Dikidzhi did have the quads and the 3a, but he misses the packaging to me. Skating skills and spins need work.

Yablokov lost a huge opportunity to medal here, the doors were open for him.

What was super weird was at first it looked like Ilya had bronze, then the judges and tech panel realised they'd scored Egor's 4S as a 3S and then adjusted the score. As a result Egor moved up to the bronze.

But like that wasn't Ilya's fault, it seems unfair that they told him he had a medal then took it away. I mean I know the results aren't final until after the competition ends, but that seems harsh. :(

Speaking of weird scores, I don't understand Kirill Sarnovsky's low score for the FS? I thought he was brilliant, but he ended up out of the top 6. What happened? Did he underrotate something? Do a lip? Did they not enjoy the armography :(

Yeah he was also undercored, i haven't checked the edges, but the jumps all looked fine to me, maybe the lutz in the 3 jumps combo was the closest. The steps sequence needed more contents, which i think he absolutely can add more cause he has good skating skills, perhaps more facial expression too, although he wasn't the only one who skated stone face the whole program.

Yeah, even with the 4S i thought Egor placing third was a bit generous, he was shaky in the free.

Visually, to me, Sarnovsky felt under appreciated by the judges. But I was glad that his short looked more organic for him.

in terms of Yablokov/Rukhin conundrum, I dunno whom I feel more for, because Rukhin’s face in K&C was pitiful to look at. Overall though, his free was cleaner and if we are on board with the idea that the revised rules must reward cleaner performances, he got bronze in accordance to that. But Yablokov is a bit more visually interesting as a performer to me. So, hard to call... except, the ice-cream part 🤣 that was unfair!

Sarnovsky got a < on his second 3A in the FS. Also only level 2 on his step sequence.

Final standings of the Queen medley battle:
5 Ugozhaev
9 Kovalev
12 Anisimov
13 Knyazev
14 Popov

5 Queen LPs out of 18, but I still miss Matvei...

Also guys please work on your step sequences! Only 6 skaters got a Level 3 (Kutovoi was the only one with GOE over 1), no Level 4...

Oh, boy, yes, the Queen... it felt like every second, but I guess it was not even every third. 🤣

My thoughts:
- Very happy for Semenenko! He deserves it. His free was not the best, he made two unusual mistakes for him - popped his 4S which was very unusual as he almost always lands it, as well as that strange mistake on the 3F+1Eu+3S. But he got his other money jumps done well.
- Golubev is not my favourite skater, he lacks quality, but I'm happy he redeemed himself from the Russian cup and was able to do well under pressure. He deserved his silver.
- Very happy for my boi Egor! He hasn't had great luck in important competitions for the past couple of seasons and was injured for ages last year, so I was so glad that he medaled. He lost the quality of his spins after moving from Eteri unfortunately, they keep taking his scores down, but his jumps have definitely improved and he went onto the ice every competition this season looking confident. Someone mentioned they didn't think he did enough for bronze? I disagree, he landed three quads (one with a hand down, other two good) and a 3A+2T. His only major mistake was the popped axel. Happy to see he has supportive coaches and he seems happy with them :)
- A shame about Ilya's two falls that cost him the bronze but the jumps he did land were great and I especially thought his short program was the best he's ever done. I love his new free program too, the music is great.
- Kolya coming 5th in his debut, being only 14 and without quads, is something to be proud of! Very gifted performer, great musicality, and his programs are very well done. He needs to work on the quality and speed of his jumps but he's consistent
- Kirill was awesome too, his artistry is improving every time, as well as his consistency
- sad about Daniil's mistakes, but I'm just so happy to see him back on the ice and watch his new programs that I don't care how he did. He showed us a new artistic and mature side to him, and I must say his programs are masterpieces - Danny G actually did well with these ones
- So sad about Mark :( it's only his debut though and he was the youngest here. He tends to fall apart under pressure in the free so that's something that needs to be worked on, because he is very capable of skating clean. Wonderful lutz technique and artistry for his age. He definitely has all the potential to become one of the best!

So, a quandary, who to send to Worlds to get three spots for the next Olympics. Kondratiuk did great but he is a newbie so won't get high scores even with a good skate and he doesn't have a good track record regarding cosistency. If he bombs losing two spots is not out of the question. Aliev would be the safest bet with an international reputation but he is having trouble recovering from covid. Makar is also relatively unknown internationally and has his own issues. Mozalev has more or less counted himself out since a skater who bombs SPs is the last thing you want at Worlds.
