so Trusova and Shcherbakova are locks, and Kostornaia and Tuktamysheva will duke it out for spot #3.

does it just come down to whoever places higher than the other? what if the scores are super close?
They'll do what they did with Liza and Evgenia in 2019. Whoever comes on top plus body of work (so they'll also look at all other competitions this year) and coaches' council (so they'll also look at reputation and PCS and international pedigree and who they like more and think has the most chance of success internationally based on what they showed here). (They'll do the same with the men too.)

That’s quite disappointing. Some other skaters here got byes (Panfilova/Rylov for example), though i assume that’s because they went to Russian Nationals. I really wanted to see Sinitsyna here but hopefully she can come back next season with a consistent 4T and show everyone not to underestimate her.
That's because they went to RusNats and other stages. You had to go to at least SOMETHING this year. Plus the national team played a role and then there aren't spots for everyone..unfortunately.

It wasn't meant as a slight to Nastya, I was just typing on my phone and being lazy. :eek2: Of course I'll keep my fingers crossed for her as well!
I didn't take it as such :) I just meant he actually has three girls there and it's an important competition for all of them. They're also probably considering GP spots with it too as well as national team spots. Whereas for Mikhail it isn't as important a competition - it's essentially just practice in front of judges.

I don't think she should approach this relaxed at all, and I'm sure she isn't, I see it as a kinda do or die situation for her. Not just for Worlds but also to keep herself in the discussion for next year.
I agree. That's why I can't wrap my head around this new free program of hers. Which was not ready 2 (!) weeks before the competition. I'm excited but also worried about how things will go for Aliona next weekend.

I see that figure skating in Russia does not give you rest, all the time throwing of news and competitions.

Just saw a cute little interview with Kamila Valieva, two interesting comments for me were:

"I know next season I need to show mature skating. Nobody will care for an excuse like 'oh but it's ok cause she's only 15'. Everyone needs to achieve results."

"The first time I saw the Olympics it was Sochi and I remember watching Yulia Lipnitskaya. I loved her so much, I wanted to be just like her and since then I've always been saying 'I want to be Olympic champion'."

Very interesting that she mentions Yulia as her inspiration, she has so many qualities that resemble Lipnitskaya! The flexibility, the spins and the je ne sais quoi that you either have or you don't.
I love how 7 years later the impression Yulia left on the sport is still so very present.

It's Mishin vs Rosanov.
Plushenko is coaching Sasha not Kostornaia.
If you look at those practice clips and competition videos, Kostornaia's mainly interacting with Rosanov. There is barely any interactions with Plushenko. It's like Jason Brown training at Cricket Club who is being coached by Tracy Willson and not Brian.
I'm not saying Plushenko doesn't care about Kostornaia, but this final fight is between Mishin and Rosanov
Jason is also coached by Brian FYI. As seen in many training clips and mentioned by both in interviews. Tracy is his main coach, but Brian also works with him and has focused more on him since last year.

Yay!

Good to see Trusova is not there. She has her Worlds spot and she needs her training to prepare.

I am soo hoping Liza will get the third spot. This is probably her last chance for Worlds.

And YAY! for seeing Talalaikina and Nugumanova again. I have loved them this season. And it will be fun to see all the others too, this definitely will be like a mini-Nationals.

A little disappointed we won't see Sinitsyna and even Gubanova. They haven't done any Cup Stages, but they could have invited them anyway.
This was the season Sinitsyna had her little chance to go to Worlds, but unfortunately with her bad luck with injuries it was not meant to be...:(
Nastya was the silver medalist last year in the Russian cup final why wouldn't she be invited with so many top skaters missing?
Ksenia too_Oh I get it she didn't skate in the cup series. Like rules really matter to the Russian fed. Lol.

Nastya couldn't do the cup stages because she was told the quarantine because some people she was in contact with had covid. Yet Anya had a fever at Russian nationals after having Pneumonia and skated. Which was the bigger health risk? We know which one was and we also know that standing in the fed and having the right coach matters and Anya had that. Nastya doesn't and never did. Ksenia too for that matter. Nastya is in career quicksand. Her career is basically over and never really got started. I have more hope for Ksenia. Especially if she learns a quad as we expect her to.

I really hope Alena gets it, she was completely robbed of her worlds, and what many consider a probable Gold, cause of Covid. It was also her first and only chance so far to go.
Liza has had dozens of chances.
And next year with Kamila and Darya, it's questionable if Alena would even get another chance.
I don't think she should approach this relaxed at all, and I'm sure she isn't, I see it as a kinda do or die situation for her. Not just for Worlds but also to keep herself in the discussion for next year. Liza is not going to Beijing anyways.
Agreed.

I don't know what to expect at the Russian cup file between the 2 skaters volume for the 3rd world spot. Can alyona turn back the clock in remember how she skated more than you are go for her previous team? Liza could
not beat that Aliona she can beat this Aliona.

Actually P/R went to Rostelecom (not a stage) and RusNats and that’s it. But since both those events are obviously quite important and they did well (well, well in placements i’m sure they were disappointed) in both. Kseniia is also part of the National Team (hence why she was originally invited to RusNats). I assumed they would invite National Team skaters for this event but since there’s only 12 not 18 skaters i guess it makes sense why.

I think Tuktamisheva is number two.
And Pluschenko will decide who is healther at specific point, Trusova or Kostornaya.
There's little choice outside those two.

Oops sorry. I meant they went to SOMETHING - one of stages, RusNats, Rostelecom, Channel 1 cup - you had to go to at least one of those. Also P/R are reigning World Junior, Junior Grand Prix Final, and Young Olympic champions. (Kseniia while amazing doesn't quite have that resume.)

I don’t think injury is what physically prevented Sasha from competing here, Plushenko was likely told she would go anyway, hence they decided to rest before Worlds.

Quite a few skaters, like B/K, S/A, Z/G, who got silver/bronze at Nationals (aside from Makar) withdrew citing health problems, which, let’s be real, is just an excuse in this case; none of those people were planning to compete to begin with, since they have already secured their spots. Not saying they don’t have any health problems, I just don’t think it’s the real reason in this particular case.
I don’t think any coach would withdraw a skater from a worlds selection competition without a guarantee that their skater has already been selected, let alone withdrawing skaters in 3 disciplines out of 4.

Just regular Rusfed shenanigans, acting as if everyone’s dumb and no one understands that Cup Final is only there to decide 3rd spot for Ladies and Pairs and 2nd spot for men, and all other spots were already decided.

Looks like the showdown is coming.

As a Liza fan, she controls her own destiny. Skate clean, skate well, win the thing and leave no doubts. Take it out of the fed’s hands and don’t leave any room for politics.

Make the score 2:0 and win on aggregate. At 1:1, you may have to rely on away goals or penalties which may complicate matters.

I think EVERYONE understands that's the case haha. That was always the case haha.

Just saw Melkumova's new skate. Boy, get this girl a better coach!!!
Glad to see those skating skills are still there. Jumps are messy as usual - the power is there and she def has the potential to land them, just need better technique...

Mm. She has deep outside edge(on Lutz), little pre-rotation, no blade assist etc. However, she does a similar twisting jump takeoff to Kamila Valieva, which causes her axis issues in the air it seems, just like it does with Valieva.

The skating skills are, well, not quite on the same level as before. We'll see where they end up after she gets some more competitions under her belt.

I agree on needing a better coach, CSKA of all clubs...
