Thats traditional. You can find many pictures with Mishin holding a piece of paper, flowers and a medal standing in front of Yagudin as the silver medalist at russian nationals.

The Russian ladies field is just too deep. She doesn't necessarily have standout elements or PCS. However, I also find her endearing and I love her weird programs this year.

RusFed has a tendency to drop their skaters when they don't live up to the hype. Not talking about the likes of Zhenya or Alina, who won many medals, but the one-hit wonders such as Sofia usually don't get much leeway and are thrown under the bus when they have a couple of bad competitions.
