What is good for Rika and Anna is that their SPs will give them confidence. What happened in their practices before today don't mean much. But the status of their ultra-C jumps is very suspect, Rika's 4S was on the q and her 3A today was more, and Anna's successful 4F was on the q too. I want to see if that changes in their next practices now.

She was GIFTED the SP through outrageous overscoring.
C'mon. It's not a world record and compared to what skates got 80 in the past and what other skaters received here I think it fits well. With stumble during the stsq which was the only mistake she did her skate deserved to win. I still have to see Rika's skate though. And as it looks for the free skate I don't think that anything between 79-81 would make any difference at the end, becasue she has to be clean in the free if others will be, nothing else will help her.

russian skating is so fickle, before Worlds it was Alena was done, now its Trusova that wont make the olympics team
it will be Valieva, Shcerbakova and Kostornaia, I really dont know who will even make in the 2022 Olympics team. Because anything can happen in a span of 10 months.
10000% true. i've said it before and i'll say it again- even if things look a certain way in skating, the complete opposite can happen on the flip of a dime.

We could call it "fickle" but with the list you had there the common nominator is that they're all coached by Eteri, and that's probably a pretty good starting point.

Yep, though I will say if Shcherbakova wins Worlds this year with her 3-consecutive national titles, if she maintains her level from this year next season I think it would be hard to see her off the team

you forgot one major scenario that nobody has control, we don't know if someone gets injured in a span of 10 months.

I don't think it's that fickle and I truly don't think that russian ladies would be more "done" or just facing problems than elsewhere as individuals. The difference is that in most of the other countries, even icl. US, and Japan, you don't have immediate substitute. For example Mariah Bell is missing worlds this season, but I think if she will deliver during the next one, she can qualify into the olympic team easily. In Russia it is much harde because there are many ladies on the same level. Though it is not impossible to miss some seasons at the top and return back as we see with Liza.

One thing that people need to remember is Anna's SP is as optimized as it can be without a 3A. She does a backloaded 3Lz-3Lo and most don't even have a backloaded triple much less a +3Lo combo.

Her SP BV is only 3 points lower than Liza's and Liza has a 3A. She actually makes up some of the difference brought about by the 3A. (3.30 vs 8)

But the problem is she has to maintain that level. And it's a really high level. Not that she can't, but if she was going to maintain that level she would most likely be going regardless of the National or Worlds title.

The most interesting situation is if she misses Nationals for some reason, would they do a Medvedeva for her? In my opinion, if she had a good season prior to Nationals they would let her. Otherwise no. That is the one leniency I don't see other skaters aside from Valieva getting.

i think it's definitely possible Sasha might be struggling with nerves as she gets older. as you grow up you gain a greater sense of consciousness around yourself, fear etc and you start actually thinking about what you're doing. it's totally possible.

she needs to hit tomorrow, and preferably find a way on the podium leading into the olympic season. if she doesn't and she's far away from the podium the fed will have no problem dropping her, especially with Kamila, Maiia, Daria and Aliona in the mix. she needs to prove they can count on her and she can deliver under pressure.

Well 3 points difference in the bv is still a lot tbf.

But Anna does have a clear advantage on the GOE, especially for the spins, even though Liza has improved a lot on those this season. (and obviously components).

For the free it depends on how judges will look at Anna's quads, if it is all good anyway as it was in the short then she'll proably win this.

I think a bad short can help to lit fire under her, so she will deliver in the free. She’s done so before.
There aren’t many skaters who can compete with her for the podium, if she does 3 quads for example. I think she’ll make up the deficit easily.

I honestly had no doubt she’ll land the combo, it’s such an uncharacteristic mistake from someone like Sasha. Hope Plushenko will support her in private, and she’ll forget this day like a bad dream.

i agree. she is a fighter and i can't imagine this didn't light a fire in her. Plushenko looked pissed after her skate so i hope he will be supportive.

I think so,too. Sasha will rise. She honestly didn't seem that upset. The girl knows how to keep things in stride!
