Congratulations Karen on a great SP! Karen's been looking great in training lately but I never thought she would place above Bradie. Quite sad for Bradie actually, I love her SP and it was an uncharacteristic pop. Hoping she comes out to slay in the FP and that Karen can have a good skate too.

I sure could use a practice report right about now. I'd really like to know how Bradie is looking. Her Free Program is crucial if we have ANY hope of gaining that 3rd spot for the Olympics. Karen is in a great position and if she skates clean, we have a real shot. Best of luck and skill to ALL the ladies in the FP.

As I understand the new rules, Bradie and Karen earned the US the right to compete for the 3rd spot at Nebelhorn in the Fall. The 3rd spot is not a given, and neither Bradie nor Karen can skate for it. They may have to send Amber or perhaps Alyssa. The new rule is confusing, but it was put in place after the 2018 Olympics and didn't come into play until this World's. The same situation will occur with the Men. If Jason and Nathan total 13 or less, another skater will have to go to Nebelhorn to earn the 3rd spot. It can be Vince. Apparently you have to have 3 skaters qualify to be able to earn the 3rd spot with the combined total of 13. I have no idea why they did this, but they did. But Karen and Bradie did their job and now it's up to a 3rd skater to earn the spot.

What I would like to know is does the USA have to designate a certain skater at Nebelhorn as the one competing for the third spot? Or could they send Amber, Alyssa and Mariah to attempt to gain that spot?

It would be interesting for the USFS to take this world championships into consideration in deciding who gets to compete in the team event.
They did last time. Karen didn't exactly do well at the Olympics. Anyway, I do think people should be kind about Bradie. She did well considering she was skating with a broken boot in both programs. Next time, she needs to prepare a backup pair of skates.

No. Only one skater can compete for the spot. I'm not sure if they can send additional skaters to Nebelhorn and designate one to be the one competing for the Olympic spot, but think of the implications. They send skaters A, B and C to Nebelhorn, and designate skater B as competing for the spot. Skater B fails to secure it, but skater A does better and would have secured it, if designated. Not good for morale at all. There's enough second-guessing team selection as it is; this would be a nightmare.
