With the new season having officially started a week ago and the Junior Test Skates drawing closer, let's get this new thread started.

The German National team is subdivided into multiple tiers depending on the age and performance level of the skaters - Olympic, perspective and supplementary squad (mainly Seniors), and youth squad 1 and 2 (mainly Juniors & Novices).

What do Hocke/Kunkel and van Rensburg/Steffan need to do to become eligible for the Olympic squad? They have qualified the Olympic spots for Germany, and it seems a shame for them to be wasted.

JGP Qualification
  • Junior Test Skates are being held in two weeks, from the 24 of July to the 27th in Dortmund. Attendance is mandatory, exceptions can be made for extenuating circumstances like illness, in which case skaters have to attend Senior Test Skates (14 - 17 August in Oberstdorf)
  • Skaters, who placed in the top 8 at Jr Worlds (only Genrikh this season), are entitled to two JGP spots without having to attend Test Skates, the other spots are distributed based on the results of the Junior Test Skates.
  • Men
    • Top 4 at Test Skates get one JGP assignment each, last JGP spot goes to highest-scoring skater at their JGP event
  • Women
    • Top 2 get one assignment each, third spot goes to either the third-placed skater at Test Skates, or either of the top 2 get a second assignment if they place in the top 10 at their first JGP
  • Pairs
    • No information about the selection procedure given
  • Ice Dance
    • Top 3 get to choose two assignments each, 4th and 5th get one assignment each, as long as they scored above 112 points. If they score 112 or place in the first half of the field at their first JGP, the 4th and 5th placed teams get a second assignment.

The Olympic squad tier in the National team is not the same as the Olympic team that will be chosen after Nationals in December.

These tiers are just a way of sorting skaters by how much "potential" they have, and Germany will send skaters in lower tiers if they are the best option available. Hocke/Kunkel, for example, were in the Olympic squad tier last season based on their European Champs medal, but dropped one tier down, while Hase/Volodin can't be officially chosen for the Olympic yet, as Nikita doesn't have citizenship at this point.

I will be really sad if Hase/Volodin can't go to the Olympics. Really hope the citizenship gets sorted soon.

Are any pairs other than the Loewenherz siblings junior eligible?

Yes, Krebs/Trofymov just turned Jr eligible, and Sevastianova/Gneidig are in their last season of Jr eligibility. If the Herrmann sibs are actually doing Pairs and weren't just playing around at the Pairs seminar in April (which I think is likely, they also attended a different seminar in Berlin last week), they would also be Jr eligible.

This feels like the long wait until Massot got his citizenship all over again. They ended up winning gold. Can we hope for the same?

Off-season also means interview season, so I'm bringing you two new ones here:

Annika Hocke & Robert Kunkel about training in the summer, developing new programs, and their plans for the next season (in German):

Genrikh Gartung on German citizenship, his new programs, plans for next season, and the differences between Moscow and Oberstdorf (in Russian):

  • Darya Grimm / Grigorii Rodin? - Ice Dance - 13.11.2006 / 19.10.2005
Well, both Darya and Grigorii just reposted this picture on their IG stories, so I guess this is as much confirmation as we are going to get right now. I am guessing we'll know more after Test Skates.

In other ice dance news, it's possible that Jenny & Benny will get a second GP assignment, with one spot at NHK Trophy opening up after Azusa's retirement. Technically, it's a host spot, so JSF could give it to a different Japanese ice dance team, but they already returned their third host spot, so they might not. As the USA is maxed out at NHK, the Browns would have to be skipped, so Jenny and Benny would be the first to be eligible on the replacement list.

Thank you for putting this together, it is a valuable resource!

I'm looking forward to seeing how the junior pairs JGP spots get allocated. Feels like Germany is in a bit of a rut right now as far as junior pairs goes, but maybe some promising novices moving up in the next quadrennium.

No problem, I have to admit, among other reasons, I also did this to procrastinate, so it was not completely selfless.

The three new Junior teams all have very different strengths, from what I can tell.

The Herrmann siblings have the strongest singles background, so they are likely to have the best/most difficult side-by-side jumps, but they are very new to pairs, so the pairs elements like lifts and twists will likely still be in early developmental stages.

Krebs/Trofymov are very experienced in pairs for such a young team, very strong lifts and general polish as a pair, but their sbs jumps will limit them at this current stage.

Sevastianova/Gneiding are somewhere in between, I'm guessing. Lukas is very experienced in pairs, with Anfisa having some limited experience. They have double Axels, and seem to be training 3S, but we won't really know their form until later in the season.

Annika Hocke celebrated her 25th birthday yesterday - Happy belated birthday to her 🎂
For her birthday, a small interview was released:

Some things that Anni has talked about before, some new things, and some interesting insights into this past season and her plans for the future.

I somehow just got a feeling to check on the state federations, and the Bavarian fed is throwing me for another loop here - again.

Because I need someone to confirm that that is indeed Atl Ongay-Perez's name staring at me from this document: Click
I knew Mia had been in the UK recently, attending a BIS ice dance seminar, but I thought it would be her making the jump to a new country, not her bringing back Atl of all people??

Good that Germany has 14 JGP spots, seems like they might be needed. Edit: Forgot that Ashlie and Atl competed at the last JGP last season, so he won't be able to compete internationally until after the JGPs are over.

Wow! That would be crazy!

It's not actually that crazy an idea. And it is probably a good move if they have Olympic ambitions. Atl's mother is German, so if he doesn't already have a German passport, it shouldn't be too hard for him to get one.
