2021-22 U.S. Pairs Figure Skating

My immediate impression is that they had a problem on the landing. I think they just should have left out the SBS because leaving it in partially just brings it to our attention that they are still likely having trouble with them.

It's very odd and disappointing that C/J aren't in the ISP. I wish a reason would be provided. It just opens the door to speculation. They're still training and creating a new program. They don't appear injured. So it seems their exclusion from ISP is not their choice, but a matter of eligibility. Are they unable to travel internationally for some reason? Are they under investigation for something? What could it be?
One possibility is that they are pursuing a possible switch to another country & have asked for a release. That would explain the WD from 2021 Worlds (to continue the clock from Skate America 2020 on when they could compete internationally) and why they are still training, despite the recent deletion from both ISP and envelope funding.

Seriously - if they were down in the 6th to 10th place frequently I could MAYBE see changing to another country. That is not the case with this team and I will be really disappointed if that's what they're doing. My projection, before they dropped out of sight, was that they would be fighting Frazier and Knierem for first place at Nats this year and both teams would go to the Olys! I think their performances last year would have supported that theory because they just kept getting better and better.

But what country? She might be able to get citizenship to the Phillipines, but they didn't qualify an Olympic spot to my knowledge.

None of this makes any sense. I guess we’ll just have to wait & see ….

Yeah, at this point, it's just best to wait and see. A country switch doesn't make much sense for them for a number of reasons, including that U.S. fed would not release them that easily, certainly not in time for the Olympics. But without competing this season internationally, their chances of making the Olympic team next year for the U.S., decreases.

I'm glad to see they are still training and apparently not unhealthy to any discernible degree.

Meanwhile, is anyone here watching the livestream of L.A. Open figure skating championships? I don't see this competition listed in the summer competitions thread here. So FWIW, here's the livestream:

Upcoming will be 3 teams competing in junior pairs short programs: (Fleming/Finster; Fletcher/Brown; Baram/Tioumentsev); 3 in senior pairs (McBeath/Bartholomay; Finster/Silecky; Liu/O'Shea); 1 team in intermediate pairs (Korytek/Griffin); and so on. Here's a link to Starting Orders/Results:

ETA:
With the time difference, apparently after this current preliminary ladies event ends, there will be a 2 1/2 hour break before junior pairs starts, so that could be very late Eastern time.

Junior Pairs warm-up is starting now at 9:30pm Eastern time...

ETA:
I don't know if this championship is now in the events thread or not, but I seem to be the only one watching the stream. LOL

Unfortunately, the audio on the livestream is admittedly (by the film company) not good quality. They are charging $55 for video copies of individual performances, which will include top-notch audio and video quality, if I understood the notation in the stream correctly.

First group - junior pairs
I found the final team, Baram/Tioumentsev to have the most polished and confident look together on the ice. They aced their elements for the most part, especially their sbs double axels. Perhaps they have been skating together longer than the other two teams. The second team, Fletcher/Brown, were clean and looked nice together, but at this point they are in the early stages of development and don't have great speed. The first pair, Cate Fleming/ Chase Finster appear to be a work-in-progress as a new team. They completed a competent 2-twist, and they landed their 2-axels fairly well. Chase had a slight bobble out of the jump. Cate could not hold her landing on the throw, and she stumbled slightly on footwork, both of which seem due to nerves or anxious excitement. The throw landing miscue maybe indicates a need to firm up her core strength. The last team, B/T had the most interesting and well-executed lift position.

Second group - senior pairs
McBeath/ Bartholomay got things off to a great start with a very good performance of their sp (bringing back the same lovely sp from last season). Nate had a slight stutter out on the sbs jump, but otherwise a nice showing with an excellent throw, good 3-twist and other elements smoothly performed.

New partners, KFinster/ MSilecky had a good debut performance. Kate fell on the sbs jumps, but I think it was nerves more than anything. They look like a promising team, and are well-matched physically. Matej is clearly an experienced and very capable partner with strong performance skills. I look forward to seeing their growth as a team.

Debut of new partners, Liu/O'Shea: They look very good together. Chelsea fell in the warm-up on the sbs 3-salchows, but she aced the jump in unison with Danny during the performance - the sign of a pro. :) Chelsea had an obvious double-footed landing on the throw, but that was the only noticeable error in an otherwise very pleasing competitive debut. Of course, with the lesser quality of livestream in-arena audio, we didn't get the full effect of this dynamic sp. I like their bold red costumes (red & black for Danny). Their chemistry is palpable. although the money elements we saw during the OIP clip didn't pop the same way simply because we are not as up close and personal as Jordan Cowan provides for us with his great video clips. So, this simple fact should be a great promotion for the wonderful work that OIP shares with all of us skating fans! Mucho gracias, Jordan!

They have a very good 3-twist which is not surprising since Chelsea has always had good height and execution on twists since juniors with Brian Johnson. The jaw-dropping lift dismount didn't have the same effect, once again because we are not right up on the ice with them. Plus, it looks like they are being cautious in competition by having Danny not place his arms behind his back. They seemingly reduced the dismount turns out of the lift to 2 1/2 turns, instead of 3 1/2 sweeping turns. That could be because it requires just the right speed, rhythm and synchronicity to remain on the beat of the music while performing the dismount smoothly and safely. During the OIP clip when Chelsea landed on the ice, there was a slight click of Danny's boot into her foot -- so maybe they cut down the turns and had Danny keep his arms out rather than behind his back for safety reasons. It would be nice if they could work up over the course of the season to the same exciting execution we witnessed in the OIP clip. However, the difference in experiencing the full debut performance vs the OIP clip has to do with seeing everything in the OIP clip close-up and with great views at various angles because Jordan is moving on the ice with them and he circles with them and around them in a way that cameras at rink side simply can't do.

Alissa Korytek (Ellie's sister?) and her partner, Carter Griffin skated their sp -- the only pair competing in intermediate division. They look good together for a young team, and obviously are coming together slowly but surely. I think they are a recent pairing. Ellie (who may be Alissa's older sister) is the young skater who is shown in OIP clips practicing a quad twist with Chris Knierim.

BTW: Nathan Chen will be skating later in the men's sp! Ooops! Make that Nathaniel Chen. My bad misreading!

I watched both the junior and senior pairs. Enjoyed them all. I love Katie & Nate, and I found Kate Finster looking really good in this SP, while her (very?) new partner, Matej, looked very game. Chelsea and Danny were awesome.

Breaking news... or non-news... depending on your point of view.

Whatever is going on with Jessica and Brian, they have a new short program to Come Together, the old Beatles song covered by Gary Clark Jr. It has a strong rock vibe to it, very powerful and different.

Instagram clip from On Ice Perspectives:

They look like they're having fun. That's great to see. It could even be a silver lining to a very dark cloud.

Ellie Korytek and her partner, Carter Griffin just skated their sp in intermediate pairs. ... Ellie is the young skater who is shown in OIP clips practicing a quad twist with Chris Knierim. ...

Alissa Korytek competed tonight with her partner.

Alissa Korytek is not the same skater as Ellie Korytek.
(My guess is that they are from the same family.)

... BTW: Nathan Chen will be skating later in the men's sp!

World champion Nathan Chen will not be competing at Los Angeles Open.

Nathaniel Chen is a different skater from Nathan Chen.

I am very appreciative to Hurd Video for the free live stream of Los Angeles Open.
Totally understandable about the audio quality.

Great to see all the senior and junior pairs here, and I look forward to some of the singles too.

(Broadmoor Open, for example, did not have any live stream -- with the exception of Aerial Challenge.)

Matej has a lot of experience, and he's a very capable pairs guy, with good execution on everything. He has been skating professionally most recently (as discussed in earlier posts). This is a new partnership, but it looks like they can be good together. New pairings always take time to develop. Kate looked happy and seemed to enjoy herself, shaking off the fall which was just nervous excitement, IMO. :)

LOL LOL!!! Wow, what a misreading. So sorry. All I saw was 'Nathan.. Chen' and that's a fact. :ROFLMAO:

I'll bet this isn't the first time that the listing 'Nathaniel Chen' led to misreads and misplaced excitement. Tee hee!

And down for the count, a second time. My eyesight is going, going, gone, obviously. At least the reading clarity part. LOL! All I saw was 'Korytek' and I got excited. My bad, once again. Ellie Korytek probably competes in juniors.

Exactly, and of course their explanation about the audio quality makes sense for a livestream. The $55 per individual performance is likely marketed to an audience of relatives who are interested in preserving performances that document career progress. Obviously, Hurd Video is justified to make a living for the services they provide. It is great of them to share this live stream free-of-charge.

Some scoring results have now been posted:
Junior Pairs sp:

Senior Pairs sp

Overall, the scoring is reasonable, except I think Katie/Nate deserved a higher score than 53+. They are a good team, which is not fairly reflected by the PCS scores. I have to disagree somewhat with the judges' ratings for them on PCS. Granted, this is Katie's second season in pairs so there's still a learning curve for her, but she's a good performer and has taken well to pairs with Nate's great partnering.

An excellent sp score for Liu/O'Shea in their debut performance. Looking back, it was nice to see them so comfortable and relaxed, chatting happily together while waiting for their cue to start their performance. Similar to Calalang/Johnson, what a remarkable new career boost partnership between two experienced pairs skaters, with past relative success with other partners (in Danny's case, notable senior competitive success with TKayne). Yet, the L/O and C/J pairings seem to have extra oomph, which demonstrates the uncanny way some skater partnerships click in a unique way that can't be predicted. If pairs partnering was based on a science of predicting magic between two athletes, then every pair would have this indefinable spark and chemistry from the start.

The other part of this is that the timing of situations and happenstance can't be predicted either. It's a matter of being open to possibilities and being prepared when they arise. Luck seems to always be a factor in figure skating outcomes. FWIW, Danny is about 9 years older than Chelsea, so seemingly this partnership couldn't really have come together sooner, as it wouldn't have been viable. The experiences they each have had previously in their careers led them to this moment and to the undefinable essence that makes their partnership work so well. The same is true for the Calalang/Johnson pairing, and for that matter, the Knierim/Frazier pairing too! 💞

I should include Cain-Gribble/LeDuc as well, since they also had a circuitous route to pairing up. They too progressed quickly together upon fortuitously partnering in 2016.

Wow, I hadn't thought of that, but that is a possibility I suppose. However, they have been doing well in the US and the judges like them, so I don't see why they would want to switch countries. It would also be a long process and I doubt they could both get citizenship in time for the next Olympics.

I have been able to go back and review the junior and senior pairs performances, but I've had the livestream up all day, and I never cut away from it. I don't know if it all goes away at some point. The streaming has ended for the day, but it looks as if the originally linked video of the event is still up for viewing. It's still working for me. Try clicking on the below again: Chelsea and Danny are waiting to perform at about 4 hrs 17min 15sec in this link:

Our friend Sylvia @UnseenSkaters has commented in the Live Chat that it would be nice if Hurd Video could upload L/O's performance in lieu of someone else copying it without permission to upload. Sylvia points out in the chat that Hurd has uploaded sought after performances of top skaters in the past at local competitions such as this one, including performances of Starr Andrews and Nathan Chen. Yep, the one-and-only Nathan (World Champion) Chen. ;)

Oh yes, the link above will work. At least, it works for me. Chelsea and Danny are waiting to start their program at about -4:30:31 into the above link. Note that the count moves backwards, which means 4hrs plus remaining, not 4hrs into the video.

BTW, the free programs may be tomorrow at 7:34 pm Pacific time, which is 10:34 eastern time. The date appears to be listed inaccurately as 7/9/21. Tomorrow is 7/10/21. I hope all of the skaters will debut their free programs.

Junior Pairs FS is scheduled to begin at 5:25 pm local time today (Sat Jul 10) at Los Angeles Open, per the EntryEeze schedule reachable at the link that I have quoted.

To be followed by Senior Pairs FS at 6:05 pm local time.

The time/date stamp there has nothing to do with the competition scheduling.)

(y) Yes, I feel fortunate this week that free live streaming is available both for Skate Milwaukee :) and for Los Angeles Open :).

That's what I said, or thought I said, or hinted perhaps. Maybe (hint to self) less hints, less subtlety.

To tell the truth, I didn't remember Kate's fall till now! That's a good sign.

For the record, I'm already a fan of Matej, as discussed in an earlier post.

Me too. As there is no thread (that I am aware of) for Los Angeles Open I only became aware of the pairs via @sylviaunseen on Twitter.
