2021-22 U.S. Pairs Figure Skating

Jess and Bryan are back!! 🙌

Saw their programs on Glacier Falls, overall looking good for being July/August. They are working on their jumps and need to polish a bit the throws but I have no doubts they will work on those along the way. So happy to see my favorite pair on the list!!

So maybe C/J will receive the TBA at Skate America.

Good for them persevering! No matter what competitions they enter this season, they have already succeeded in overcoming some personal hurdles. It will be a pleasure to see them competing alongside other top pairs teams this season. 👍

USFS has added Calalang/Johnson's names back to the ISP list.

What does it mean, besides funding? Does it mean they can now compete internationally again, such as in a GP?

Also, as a general comment:
The ISP list includes some skaters who are not receiving USFS envelope funding.
The criteria for the ISP list and for envelope funding are different.

FWIW, what happened in the case of Calalang/Johnson:

When I first noticed their reappearance on the ISP list on Tuesday night, I posted about it here only after checking the USFS page for 2021-22 envelope funding -- where C/J's names remained absent (so at the time, I purposely said nothing about funding).

Then by Wednesday, USFS later did add C/J's names to the envelope funding page too. :)

Wow. I hope Ashley recovers soon and safely! Sending her prayers and healing thoughts. I wonder if they can track back so that everyone she's been in contact with is also tested and quarantined for the necessary time? I would imagine that Timothy and Ash's entire family have also been tested.

Sad news, and it shows us to be extra careful, even when we are vaccinated. I am fully vaccinated and I still wear my mask when I go out on errands and shopping. I traveled in May and June (within the U.S. to visit family), but I stayed as careful as I could re mask-wearing and hand-washing, etc.

Speedy and full recovery for Ash -- fingers-crossed!!! I hope she and Timothy can resume training soon, and that it will be enough time for them to still compete at Skate Canada GP. If not, then for sure at NHK. ❤️

A look at the senior pairs entrants. The short program is on Saturday at 6:45pm, and the fp takes place on Sunday at 4:45pm. Ashley & Tim are listed as WD.

Among the entrants listed, based on scoring rep to date, I would think placements might shape up as follows. Of course, I bear in mind that anything can happen, which could change predicted placement outcomes:

Tarasova/Morosov
Knierim/Frazier
Liu/O'Shea or Calalang/Johnson (3 and 4 or reverse order)
Lu/Mitrofanov
Chan/Howe or Pfund/Santillan (6 and 7 or reverse order)
McBeath/Bartholomay or Smirnova/Siianytsia (8 and 9 or reverse order)
Kops/Krasnopolski
Crafoords

The interesting thing with all of the U.S. pairs teams entered, would have been to see where Ashley & Tim might have placed, which is of course, off the table with their withdrawal. The important thing is to see Ashley recover safely, and I hope that happens soon.

Meanwhile, they were looking so good in the training clips Ashley posted on her Instagram that it would have been one of the most interesting match-up outcomes in the pre-season to see where they might have placed. With the way C-G/LD were looking, I think they may have been on pace to place ahead of L/O and C/J, or at the least have been very competitive which means the scores would have been tight. If they skated clean, Ash & Tim are talented enough to challenge K/F too, as well as a subpar T/M with mistakes. Not unheard of since Ash & Tim placed in front of T/M at the 2019 U.S. International Figure Skating Classic.

The match-up between L/O and C/J already occurred at Glacier Falls. Both teams are equally talented, but L/O might have the edge if C/J continue to have sbs jump issues. L/O have some weaknesses at the moment too, but they have been managing to land their jumps, with Chelsea needing to maintain consistency, and to eliminate the double-footing on her throw landings. Between the two teams, Danny is the strongest jumper. Both Danny and Brian are strong, solid pairs guys. I think C/J have the edge in terms of unison on spins and great execution and height on their 3-twist, although L/O have a pretty good twist as well (it just may be not quite as high). C/J at this point seem to have a bit better death spiral. Both teams have strong lifts. C/J have been together longer which is possibly a slight advantage in terms of being very familiar with each other to the point where it is second nature for them to move very smoothly together over the ice.

Here's a glimpse of Ashley and Timothy's new SP.

It's gorgeous, and I'm happy they chose this music. The elements are looking so good; I hope they can keep it going in competitions. It is a testament to how pairs teams can improve their elements, little by little, by continuing to work toward their values in skating. I only have one complaint about Ashley and Timothy, and I think I've kept it to myself until now. I wish they'd look at each other more during the programs. Timothy especially seems to be looking off into space, or even worse, looking through Ashley. It's particularly frustrating because they have such a wonderful, funny, supportive friendship and partnership ... I just wish this connection between them could be made more visible to audiences. This clip reminds me a little bit of Tarasova/Morozov, and how they have such classical beauty and skating, and all the pairs elements, but there always seems to be something missing.

The thing with Ashley and Timothy has been made even more pointedly (for me) because watching Chelsea and Danny, their connection is so charming and clear, while not being overly dramatized; it's very natural. The thing is that they really look at each other, even if only for one or two seconds, at multiple times. And it's unforced; it seems to be just a natural expression of their feelings of happiness at skating together.

On another note, I wish Ashley a complete and speedy recovery. I hope they can just continue on with their progress, which looks to be quite promising.

Have Brandon and Alexa debuted their new programs for this season? I'm hoping for some improvements in their PCS since they seem to be doing well from a technical standpoint.

This is a good prediction. We'll see how it plays out.

I'm rooting for Lu/Mitrofanov to have a breakthrough. Something about them... I can't define it... I really like.

Yes, I've enjoyed watching L/M since they won Junior pairs a few years back. They are very consistent on the jumps. Their drawbacks have been immaturity and generally lacking a connection with each other and not projecting that well to the audience. The good thing is that they are fully aware of and have been working on their weaknesses. They admitted in an article last season that they are both introverts, which means it hasn't been as easy for them to project outward. But being aware of and acknowledging this drawback is the first step. Only time provides maturity, and what matters most is what you make of the time you have in the present moment. Every season, L/M show improvement.

L/M are certainly very important to U.S. pairs' continuation of the excellence and competitive depth we have been seeing in this discipline for a number of seasons. It would be great if all the teams stuck around for at least another season after the 2022 Olympics! But there's no guarantee how long the veteran teams will continue. L/M and other up-and-coming teams will be crucial to continuing the excellence and depth that our veteran teams have established. It's possible that both K/F and C-G/LD might retire after 2022 Worlds. Since Danny & Chelsea are newly partnered, they surely will stay around for a bit longer, hopefully. And Calalang/Johnson are definitely going to keep improving and go the distance -- Fingers-Crossed!!! But as I said, maybe all the teams will come back for at least one more season post Olympics before saying goodbye, which I hope will happen. ❤️

FS: "Never Break" by John Legend

I'm seeing an important theme with the titles of these musical selections. 😄

I suppose Benoit did the choreo for their sp, and Cindy Stuart likely blessed their fp, as has happened the past few seasons. Choreo info is not included in the GS programs thread.

Knierim/Frazier have collaborated with the wonderful SL Bourne on their inspired House of the Rising Sun sp selection! I can't wait to see it. I'm stoked because we were deprived of seeing what magic Shae Lynn might have worked on the ice for pairs excitement with James/Cipres. Of course, now we'll never see that aborted program. So Shae Lynn working with another pairs team is great. Even better that she's working with a U.S. team! K/F's Fix You fp is choreographed by the very creative Renee Roca, who has worked with Brandon a number of times (most notably, the iconic Lion King redux in B's final season with Haven Denney). Plus, last season, I believe Renee choreographed both of K/F's programs, if I'm not mistaken.

As a reminder, Liu/O'Shea's fp music is, Becoming Human from Score: A Film Documentary, composer: Ryan Taubert, choreo by John & Sinead Kerr:

It's wonderful to see the clip of Ash & Timothy's sp to The White Crow. I see in the programs thread that Misha Ge choreographed this sp. I thought Camerlengo did the sp choreo. But I guess Camerlengo tends to work with them more-so on their fps. I love what I see in the sp clip. Everything flows so beautifully, and highlights their gorgeous lines. :yahoo:

Your constructive critique is interesting @skylark. I think you are right that Ash&Tim don't often look at each other. But it's not as if they never look at each other. I think you are right though to a degree. Still, I think that although they seem to be skating in their own worlds or enjoying presenting themselves without necessarily looking at each other a lot, they do have a connection. Perhaps the connection is subtle, rather than obvious. But I think it is there, and it runs deep. Maybe they could work on ways of showing it more because I'm sure they feel it between each other. They are not a romantic team, but I think they connect spiritually.

Danny & Chelsea are not in a romance with each other either. Neither are Brian & Jessica. Neither are Alexa & Brandon. I doubt Audrey and Misha are in a romance either. But all of these teams have a very special connection. Of all, I do agree that Danny & Chelsea have a natural, easygoing vibe, and they clearly are having fun, similar to the immediate, natural connection and friendship between Jessica & Brian. Alexa & Brandon last season smiled joyfully at each other a lot, but maybe not as much as we've seen to date from Chelsea & Danny. A&B are friends (with Chris sharing in the friendship) and we can definitely see their level of trust in how quickly they clicked. The same with Brian & Jessica.

Audrey & Misha have to work harder on connecting with each other and interacting with each other and the audience. Still, all of C&D, J&B, A&B, and A&M can likely do romantic programs if they wish, in full knowledge that it's just for the program, and not their actual reality. Ashley & Tim have already explained to us that they are not a romantic team, and that's not the vibe nor the aesthetic they are going for at all. It may be harder for A&T to show through looking at each other that they are connecting spiritually, and not romantically.

I guess I understand what you mean when you compare a lack of a more forceful connection between A&T, with Tarasova/Morosov's inability to express their emotional connection. However, the situations for these two teams are very different. T/M were once a couple, but they never showed a strong connection on the ice. Now, they are no longer a couple, so that resulting dynamic hasn't helped their partnership. Plus, they've had trouble finding the right music since forever. T/M have done the best with classical selections, but they still tend to skate rather unemotionally. Their attempt, under Mozer, at doing something more lively with their 2017-2018 Candyman fp failed, as we know. So it will be so interesting to see how T/M fare under Eteri & co. Comparatively, Ashley & Tim have had wonderful performance success with lively fun programs, such as The Great Gatsby, and I Put a Spell on You.

Cooke/Bearinger and The Mokhovs will be competing in the Cranberry Open event, as opposed to the Cranberry Cup, where the other U.S. senior teams are entered.

Schedules and some starting orders are posted on the Cranberry International website.

Starting orders for Senior pairs at Cranberry Cup are up:

I just finished watching free programs for Junior pairs and the two senior pairs who were entered in the Cranberry Open event. More later.

ETA:
I enjoyed getting a glimpse of the Junior pairs entered in the Cranberry Open today. I only saw today's free skate event for Junior pairs (and the two senior pairs: Mokhovs and Cooke/Bearinger). Unfortunately, I missed the short program sessions that took place yesterday. And it doesn't look like replays are available. Nor has anyone responded as to whether videos have been uploaded anywhere.

Final results Cranberry Open pairs (junior/senior):
https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2021/30005/CAT044SEG044.html senior sp
https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2021/30005/CAT049SEG049.html senior fs

https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2021/30005/CAT043SEG043.html junior sp
https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2021/30005/CAT048SEG048.html junior fs

I know this is more or less considered a tune-up event for the season. But why they don't total both programs and provide overall leaderboard results is beyond me.

Overall Cranberry Open leaderboard results:

@moonvine said replays are available as far as she knows. If that's the case, it must be while the stream is still active. But nope, I don't see where the stream allows for moving backward to replay previous sessions.

For fans of Ashley/Timothy, you can see their entire new season's sp filmed by Jordan Cowan of OIP on his patreon website page. That is if you sign up as a patreon for a very reasonable small monthly sum. A shorter clip of their sp has already been made available. Seeing the full program clip is fantastic, especially since Ash/Tim had to withdraw from Cranberry Cup due to Ash's illness. It's also great to be able to contribute to Jordan and OIP! The work they are doing is incredible and deserves to be supported by all skating fans.

It is such a shame that Ash/Tim's season progress has been interrupted by this freakin' virus. I hope Ashley fully recovers soon and that she can safely return to training. They look absolutely fantastic in this new program. And it's always a pleasure being able to watch a program up close and personal, on the ice with OIP! Seriously, this new program is boss, and A&T look so fit, with gorgeous lines, and great music for the aesthetic they are going after, which works to highlight their strengths. Such abominable luck for Ashley to come down with this virus, after being fully vaccinated. I hope this shows everyone the importance of continuing to mask, keep distances, wash hands, etc., regardless of vaccination status.

@skylark, I again noticed what you said earlier about Ash/Tim not looking at each other, despite the connection they absolutely do have. Even after their performance, they didn't engage with each other in this practice session. But it's just a training session filmed by OIP, and not an indication of how they interact as a team on a regular basis.
