Odd decision. So she is all healed up, good news

Who would you have had them select for the Host spot if not Audrey and why?

Audrey finished third last year at Skate America, sixth at ISP, seventh at nationals and fourth at Cranberry Cup this year - she was the highest place finisher at all those events for US ladies that do not have 2 GP assignments already.

She would win anyway, but still...
I hope that Bradie will be recovered in time for her GP.
Does anyone know the 10 (?) skaters who are currently next in line in the replacement pool, in case Bradie and/or Amber can’t make Skate America?

Ohhhhh I didn't even think about them possibly not able to do SkateAm. I have tickets and I would be SUPER bummed if they both couldn't do it. :-(

I was mildly surprised that she got the spot, but after reading your post, I really shouldn't have been.

Your analysis is very clear, thank you.

Not really. She is close to her pre-injury self for one thing. Also, she is the future of U.S. skating, and this will allow her to move up the list a bit. Gabby and Paige are not there yet, consistency wize.

Clearly the choice was between Audrey and Gabby Izzo. On one hand, Gabby has higher scoring potential and she did well at a few summer comps, but in the other she is inconsistent and did not do well at Cranberry International. Audrey has always had issues with URs even prior to her injury. So, I think her total scoring potential is lower. But, she is more consistent and has nice spins. I imagine she looked better at Champs camp than Gabby and was thus chosen. Not surprising at all.

I was just looking on Twitter for any information coming out of champs camp and one observer said that Gabby looked "incredible" during practices. He also predicted an Alysa-Karen-Audrey Oly's team, but I guess we have no way of knowing how Amber and Bradie will recover from their injuries.

I also want to hear how Ting Cui is doing; when injury-free and able to compete, she is a lovely skater. I’m not ready to count her out just yet.

With the completion of the third stage of the Junior Grand Prix, here is where our junior women stand in terms of highest total scores (US junior women bolded):

1. Veronika Zhilina, 216.92
2. Sofia Muravieva, 208.25
3. Isabeau Levito, 202.35
4. Adeliia Petrosian, 201.21
5. Chaeyeon Kim, 191.46
6. Mariia Zakharova, 190.33
7. Lindsay Thorngren, 181.45
8. Kaiya Ruiter, 179.92
9. Ava Marie Ziegler, 176.29
10. Clare Seo, 174.80

Upcoming assignments:
  • JGP Russia - Kate Wang & Maryn Pierce
  • JGP Slovenia - Lindsay Thorngren & TBD
  • JGP Poland - Clare Seo & TBD
  • JGP Austria - 2 spots TBD
Thus far, Isabeau Levito, Lindsay Thorngren, Clare Seo, Josephine Lee, Mia Kalin, and Ava Marie Ziegler have all competed. With Clare and Lindsay receiving second assignments, I reckon that Isabeau and Ava will probably receive second assignments as well. That leaves two spots. The other prominent junior women that has yet to compete is Kanon Smith.

Was Bradie Assigned Skate America? I imagine she won't be able to attend any GP this season. She has a bye into Nationals and I think she should recover fully before she steps on the ice

Lindsay was so underscored in the first event in comparison to the later events. I get she URs sometimes, but so do all of the girls above her. I think her strengths/weaknesses weigh out similarly to the girls that are 10-20 points above her. Jumps, spins, steps are all there. The programs aren’t great, but once again, not everyone above her has great programs, either.

Yes, both she and Amber are assigned to SkateAm. It's seven weeks away, too soon to write them off for the whole first half of the season. And at their level, you don't just not do a Grand Prix unless you really, really, really are too injured to do it. She'd lose the ISU ranking points and that affects the skate order at the Olympics.

When referring to highest TOTAL scores, a single score result doesn't mean much. It's the total of TWO event scores that is of interest.

Chaeyeon KIM KOR 379.92
Kaiya RUITER CAN 357.52
Seoyeon JI KOR 342.61
Ahsun YUN KOR 333.38

When the top Russian women complete their second event, you can bet their total scores will be well over 400. And we haven't seen the 5 Russian women from Krasnoyarsk yet.

At least post-Krasnoyarsk, there can be no more than 2 Russian women per event.
