2021 Skate America: Men's Short Program

Ahmahgawd.

Vincent is in first!!! You go, sir! You go!

Really enjoyed Shoma and Jimmy (does taking your hair elastic out mid-program count as a costume change? 😉) Kevin's step sequence was awesome as always and Nathan was a surprise, but he's sure to come back in the FS.

Ah those menfolk they love making it a rollercoaster ride!

Certainly not the level of skating I expected tonight :frown: Hopefully, tomorrow the cobwebs will be swept away and the we'll see some great skates! I am a little baffled that Nam's score is only 74. There is no way that the PCS of both French skaters should be higher than Nam's PCS. They made major errors on most if not all of their jumps and they still beat Nam's PCS? If everyone skates clean, then yes, I would put Kevin's PCS above Nam's but the judges really need to start deducting more PCS for disaster skates. It really disrupts every part of the skating and therefore the artistic merit of the overall skate. Otherwise, it's not fair to the other skaters who skated better overall.

Shoma won this event in 2016 when he was still a baby phenom, who lacked ice coverage and who had some technique issues on some of his jumps. The judges were blinded by his smooth, flowing, sublime movement qualities, and the fact he could land quads. Jason Brown or Adam Rippon should have won that year because they both brought gorgeous skating, maturity, and the weaving of stories on the ice. Jason did land his quad in the fp, but the judges refused to recognize that he did.

Not sure what's going to happen in the free program. Will Nathan be fired up to bring it, or is his head somewhere else in this Olympics year? Will Vincent prevail, or will Shoma grab gold? Will Jimmy Ma make the podium? Will one of the other guys make a come-from-behind stab at brilliance? Adam Siao Him Fa has two great programs, and he should do well if he could calm down. Kevin Aymoz is so talented. I hope Kevin redeems himself in the fp, and just enjoys his skating.

These are all fascinating questions to ponder.

Nathan has some pressure on him. Shoma and Vicent are both going for 5 quad programs, and had almost clean run-throughs. Even if Nathan wins the free, if the two of them go almost clean, the deficit after the short might be big enough that he loses. He needs to be perfect, and hope the other guys make mistakes.

Yes, but Nathan is capable of a 6-quad program. I just don't think Nathan needs to put out too much OTT energy at this competition. He just needs to skate clean and do what he's capable of doing here. Maybe he's been worried about the hit to his reputation after his perfectly innocent, but ill-thought out comments in that interview he gave to two hosts who understand zip about the sport of figure skating.

Well, Shun is injured, so he should consider withdrawing. I'm not sure whether he's concerned about points, or whether his fed is placing pressure on him to compete.

Kevin does seem like something is bothering him physically or mentally. But he should try to overcome and do his best in the fp.
No, if Kevin is injured, or even if something is bothering him mentally that badly, he should withdraw. What he put out there today was dangerous. If he's not already injured - which he is - he will be if he continues to skate like that.

They should both withdraw. We should only have a 9 man FS tomorrow. We won't. And unfortunately, it sounds like both feds have a hand in that.
