2021-22 U.S. Pairs Figure Skating

I feels pairs spots are gonna come down to results at Nationals. A true Olympic trials, as neither teams have enough "swing votes" on their body of work platter.

I know Olympic spots for EU/RUS skaters have come from the respective results at Europeans, but not sure if the US ever make skaters do a skate-off at 4CC.

European nationals are mostly in December and Euros is two weeks earlier than 4CC, so it is possible for European countries to use Euros as a skate-off.

The timing between US Nationals (January), 4CC and the Olympics is much too tight for a skate-off. That's also why Olympic bound skaters never go to 4CC. 4CC becomes an excellent opportunity for the next tier of US skaters to attend an ISU Championship, so it's a win-win rather than a negative.

Ashley/Timothy's Skate Canada FS video from NBC Sports was posted yesterday on its YouTube channel:

The commentary from Tanith White, Johnny Weir, and Tara Lipinski was full of appreciation for Cain-Gribble/LeDuc's skating and program on this day as well as for their partnership in general. :)
Somehow, I missed this yesterday. I really enjoyed listening to Tanith, Johnny & Tara's commentary. :thank:

Tanith pointed out that one of Ashley & Timothy's 'overarching goals' is to make space in the pairs discipline for pairs who don't necessarily 'fit the mold.' Thank you, Tanith, for saying this, and thank you, Ash/Timothy, for advancing this goal :rock::cool:

Three GP/JGP/Challenger events are needed for an international bye to 2022 Nats.

So far, Liu/O'Shea have only two: Skate America and Warsaw Cup.
They do not yet have a bye to 2022 Nats.

(Golden Spin is not on the USFS list of Challengers that count toward an international bye. Not sure whether the USFS omission of Golden Spin is accidental or intentional.
So even if Liu/O'Shea later were to be assigned to Golden Spin, I still would not feel sure whether they would have an international bye.

But if[?] a vacancy were to arise at a GP, another GP for Liu/O'Shea would count as the required third event.)

Updating my Oct 17 comments on Liu/O'Shea:

They did not compete in Henderson event of Championship Series -- and they are not listed in the start order for the second/final pair event in Norwood (published tonight).

All in the realm of speculation, but I assume that Liu/O'Shea want to compete at Nats?
Which would lead me to believe at this point that they are expecting to have an international bye to Nats??

Which would lead me to suspect at this point that they are expecting to compete at Golden Spin?? And that Golden Spin will count for toward an international bye, even though not listed in the USFS bye document as of Jun 12?
Or ... another possibility would be that USFS decided on some date after Jun 12 to add Cranberry Cup and/or Nicks International to the list of internationals that count toward byes??

Good luck to Cain-Gribble/LeDuc and Lu/Mitrofanov at NHK Trophy this week. 🇺🇸

I don’t think it is in the realm of possibility they would not want to compete at Nationals.

According to the discussion in the Warsaw Cup General info thread, there is going to be one. No link yet.
Looking at the entries there are some interesting entries and match-ups especially in pairs and dance.

See below link to Warsaw Cup pairs entries. The U.S. is sending C/J, Chan/Howe, and Liu/O'Shea:

https://results.isu.org/events/cspol2021_Pairs.htm

Of course, Calalang/Johnson are the 2019 Warsaw Cup defending champions. 2020 Warsaw Cup was cancelled due to a large number of withdrawals in that pandemic season.

In 2019, WC did not attract a field deep with top pairs skaters, so it's interesting that Tarasova/Morosov have chosen to compete at WC this season. On paper, T/M are probably favored to win. If C/J are in top form, they should have a chance to medal again. Good luck to C/J and to all the other U.S. teams.

I've posted a pairs entries discussion thread under 2021 Warsaw Cup.

Norwood started today, with novice short, intermediate, and juvenile pairs. Peterson/Evora's intermediate pairs team won with a very commanding lead. Really fun program

Can't wait to watch the juniors teams though. Excited to see Baram/Tioumentsev. They had a huge lead in Nevada with about 40 points higher than the second place. Saw Baram in Leesburg where she was the novice ladies champion getting the highest score for that event. That girl is so good.

The team that won Nevada -- McBeath/Bartholomay is not competing in Norwood. We'll see if Plazas/Fernandez or
Finster/Silecky will win. I enjoyed Kate Finster and Balazs Nagy before but I think Finster/Silecky is yet to really fully come together. Heard Nagy is now in Russia

I had heard Nagy was now competing for Hungary. Is that still the case and he's just training in Russia or is he now with a Russian partner?

He left to go to Hungary but heard he's been recruited by Russia and now has a Russian partner. Will further confirm

He has competed this season with Maria Pavlova. She's Russian, but they are competing for Hungary. They train in Russia I believe.

They competed at Budapest Trophy and the Denis Ten Memorial.

I think he's been recruited by Hungarian fed since Mark Magyar is retiring after this season. Balasz Nagy with Maria Pavlova trains in Sochi Russia with Fedor Klimov and Dmitry Savin team. Their fellow national team competitors Iulia Schchetinina / Mark Magyar train with the same coaching team and Hungarian fed sends both teams to the same competitions. So Balasz is in the olympics race now and has a real opportunity to go there.
