Kazuki Tomono

Thanks for all the reports and pictures!
Good luck to Kazuki in the FS! Come on, Kazuki, you can do it 💪 I hope he sells La La Land and makes the entire hall clap along. How awesome, in a stadium like this. :)
Merry Christmas, all! 🎄
He has what it takes to make the Olympic team. Go Kazuki go! 🙌🏻🇯🇵

Absolutely delighted by Kazuki's top 5 finish in what was a really, really tough and high-level competition 🎉
Kazuki was assigned to 4CC in Tallinn, with Kao and Sena! :party2: About Olympics and Worlds alternates, nothing has been announced yet, I'm very curious.

Let me tell you what I'm most happy about. Not wanting to take anything from Kao and Sena, they did super well, but they came into the competition as juniors/new seniors with zero pressure. This is different from being an established senior, performing consistently well and handling pressure, which is what Kazuki has been doing this season. It's been a long journey for him but I think he's now getting there in terms of what he could be for Team Japan. I really hope JSF sees this.

Big congratulations to Kazuki for his great Nats performances. His exuberance and connection with the audience were on full display during that FS. Wow! It was magical. I accidentally ended up staying all night ( :laugh2: ), but he had me dancing even at 5 am! So happy to see that he was assigned 4CC. I saw him at Worlds 2018, and I wonder if I'll see him at Worlds 2022. Only time will tell. In the meantime, keep practicing and fighting!!!!

Congratulations to Kazuki for his top 6 finish once more, and to getting assigned to 4CC! I look forward to seeing his performance. I have already seen the SP. It was nice, but the FS should be something extra, so I hope I stumble upon a video ☺️
Good luck at 4CC! ^ ^

So it seems that Kazuki is the second alternate for both Olympics and senior worlds, with Kao being the first.

NGL I'm disappointed. Kao did amazing but I think Kazuki deserved to be first alternate due to more experience and overall season results. But it seems JSF is now full on betting in their 'new generation' agenda 🙃

But if they're hypothetically planning to send Kao to Jr Worlds (and who better should they send to earn spots?), is it then possible to send him to Sr Worlds as well? And if not, and if Yuzuru decides to skip like he did 4 years ago, then there's a fair chance Kazuki will get sent again, no?

They could send Kao to both junior and senior worlds with no issues 😕

I'm a huge fan of Kao, and I think he did amazing today, but unlike Kazuki I don't think he has yet a 'body of work' so to speak to justify being the first in line for Olys and worlds. In the past they held back juniors in favour of more experience contenders for worlds (like Yuma and Tomoe in 2019), but it seems they're not doing it now, in line with what they said about favouring the new generation. It's sucks that Kazuki gets overlooked at every opportunity 😔

Do the alternates get a medal for the team event at the Olympics if the team as a whole wins? After all the alternates are part of the team right?

No, the alternates don’t get any medal and only the skaters who participate in the team event get a medal… for example, if Shoma and Yuma compete in the team event and team Japan win, Yuzu won’t get anything

Aww, that would suck if they did that. I am not on the Kao fan bandwagon, but sending him to two WC could be quite exhausting, especially if there are quarantines. Not to mention JSF would be putting all their eggs in the same basket, and Kao is not a paragon of consistency, like most boys on Team Japan.
I'd rather see Kazuki at senior WC.

The Kazuki/Kao situation is similar to Mai/Mana: one is younger and did better at Nats, the other is more experience and has better overall international results (higher SB/WS). They explained that they favoured Mana because she's part of the 'new generation' so one can assume this is the rationale for favouring Kao over Kazuki as well. Whether this is a smart strategy, and what this will do for Kao's overall development, it's another matter... and subject for another thread.

As for Kazuki, looking back onto these past four years, I know it's kuyashii he didn't manage to get into the Nats podium, but OTOH he hasn't dropped from the top 6 at senior Nats since 2016! This is incredible considering his ups and downs, coaching change, re-tooling his tech, upgrading BV, the COVID pandemic and increasing competitiveness in the Japanese men field. In addition, since the 2018-19 he has managed to retain his two GP spots and won a couple of GP medals, and also managed to be assigned to 4CC in 2019, 2020 and 2022 (the only one he wasn't assigned to was cancelled).

This is all due to Kazuki's incredible hard work and resilience, and Misha's words are spot on:
Sometimes, it is not always about the win, sometimes it is not all about the points, sometimes it is about the fight, the spirit. Four years are teaching him, from a boy to a man. A long journey with ups and downs.
To see his heart fighting under such pressure, make you feel proud for the person he became and make you realize all the work we have done for the years was worth it.

He also said on Instagram watching Kazuki at Nats he cried for the first time watching a student 🥺

Very special hat!
This is so cute! I love this little clip as well:

Kazuki performed 'Bills' at MOI today, seems that he used a picture of himself this time (Kazukinception?) 😂

haha, he's an ingenuous guy ^ ^ Agh, how I wish he'd teach his mental resilience to others! =_= But very happy for Kazuki that he figured it out all by himself. It's a gift.
I am happy to see Kazuki at MOI, just thought for some reason that it was for the Jr and Sr Nats podium finishers only, maybe someone can explain? (yup, I'm too lazy to google it -_- )

I might be wrong, but I think top 3 at novices and juniors + top 5 at seniors normally get invited to MOI. I haven't come across any videos from 'Bills' at MOI, if anyone has seen it, please share!

All Japan Championship

Thank you for all your support.
The result was 5th place!
I made some mistakes, but I think it was a match where I couldn't put out the power I have now.
It wasn't a waste of years of working hard to reach the Olympics.
The representative did not come true, but I would like to improve again for the Four Continents Championships!

He also posted some fun IG stories - mainly group pics, and one in which he said 'Last year's Taichi wore me out' 😂

I'm so glad he thinks his efforts to reach the Olympics weren't a waste. Many fans are interpreting Misha's hashtag #NextOne as an indication that Kazuki's going to continue competing after this season, and I hope they are right

Think he’ll continue to skate at his usual rink just for fun when he retires one day?
