I've read today that Lithuania hasn't issued Allison Reed with citizenship so they're unlikely to go to Olympics. They finished above Sasha & George at Nebelhorn, so I'm counting down till they get the spot. How many more to go?
There are 5 countries in line before a potential 2nd British spot (Hungary, South Korea, Italy, Australia, and Israel). And no spot has opened up at this point. Lithuania has a 2nd team with the minimums that I believe has citizenship.

ETA: we haven't seen Min/Eaton since Nebelhorn and South Korea doesn't have a 2nd team, but all the others on that list have at least one team with minimums who has competed recently. So even if a spot was open, there's really no chance of it going to the British.

I'm pretty sure that Loena along with her brother were solely funded by their family until she started finding sponsors and getting support from the Belgian Fed. Ice time in the UK is limited (rinks were closed most of last year due to ice skating being classed as a hobby) and there is no funding. Also top coaches tend to be based abroad. But I have hope for ice dance, I also think we are building good momentum for the 2026 Olympics!
I didn't know that, well, I'm glad loena's family could pay for her and her brother to train, because both are very talented. I hope loena gets many show opportunities to earn money since I can imagine the huge amounts they've spent over the years.
In answer to the post above, I believe there is a younger LTU dance couple who may be eligible to go in the absence of R/A. R/A weren't at Nebelhorn as they qualified 15th at Worlds?

Interesting questions, I'll do my best to reply.

Gracie Gold was kind enough to send a video message of encouragement to the skater in the documentary whose name was Lily Mathias. She's at college now and still skating in Blackpool, but she had switched to Dance and was placed 4th at the British Qualifier in August at Sheffield with partner Theo Alexander. They trained in London at Streatham with former Bulgarian Champions Mina Zdravkova & Chris Davis after their home rink of Lee Valley closed to be rebuilt as a Twin Pad with off ice facilities and some seating. A perfect venue to host a JGP so let's hope it happens after Lee Valley re-opens in 2022/23. Sadly Lily & Theo broke up shortly after the Qualifer.

No, GB hasn't had a Top 10 Ladies Skater since Joanne Conway in the late 80s/early 90s. Lowena is extremely talented, and a one off, she's not on a conveyor belt of talent from Belgium. The British Federation literally has no money, so unless your parents can afford to pay, you don't have much chance of progressing. Look at talented skaters from GB who have had to give up competition because they simply couldn't afford the costs any longer - PJ Hallam is the latest. No surprise several British Championships Medalists from this month come into the wealthy family category, good luck to them as they're also very talented and hard workers, so deserve their success. Or in special circumstances our current Ladies Champion is Scottish so receives financial help from the Scottish Sports Authority aswell as lots of sponsorship, she's a big star locally. But UK Sport which funds Olympic Sports cut off Skating's funding years ago, and they've struggled ever since. The last skaters who received a big grant, and I'm talking £40K, were the Kerrs. Our icedancers have always kept up a Top 10/GP/European medal winning presence over the years where our other disciplines haven't, eg. Steven Cousins was our last Top 10 Man. Without funding - however it's provided - it's impossible to progress in this sport. Plus, our Federation is not the most proactive or without criticism. Since I became a Fan, they've changed name and moved Offices 3 times. They're not very responsive to Fans at all.

No rules against home schooling, infact many skaters are home schooled. Sadly, showing talent at a young age hasn't always led to translating that to Senior level. I'm thinking of Genevieve Somerville who was doing 3Lutz in her first JGP aged 14, but now on the verge of Senior, she's lost the ability she had rather than progressed. Ofcourse a female body changes, grows and develops and this hinders jumping. Solo Dance is very big here which many girls choose over Singles. I think Elena Komova is our most promising for future success, she's come up from Basic Novice and all levels as Champion and is reigning GB Junior Champion. Hopefully she'll move to Senior next season and continue her progress. But I think we'll be waiting a long time to find someone as good as Lowena.
Thanks for the information. I'm sorry Lilly couldn't keep doing singles, she seemed so passionate about it.
You mentioned that the top British skaters this year are from wealth; so, are they training overseas? Do they still need funding from the Federation? Are they able to do triples? I didn't watch British nationals this year. All I know is natasha has been the top woman for years, but she struggles with difficulty and consistency.
The British skating Federation has no money anymore??

The skaters from wealthy families are all training abroad but they're not Singles skaters, they're all icedancers. The difference between GB and many European countries is our history of success in icedance going back to the 50s when it joined the European and World Championships, plus Solo Dance can appear more attractive an option than Singles. The opposite is true for America where the Ice Princess appears in films and on TV is the most popular discipline in Skating competitions. The British Federation hasn't had money for years, we've only had coverage of the British Championships, not on TV, but on the BBC website or iPlayer since 2018 after a long break of no coverage. Competition Skating only gets media coverage here every 4 years at Olympics. It's the most minority of minority sports.

Just bumping this thread up to warn you that the BBC coverage of the British Championships is expiring this week. The first video expires in 3 hours from now.

I realise that this is short notice, but I forgot that they would only be up for 30 days. But the good news is that, if you already have the video playing or paused at the expiry time, it will survive until you navigate away from the page. So, you can actually eek out some extra time.

Now, I should warn you, the BBC have made a right mess of the archived videos. For example, the Senior Ladies and Senior Pairs SP's, which were held on Saturday afternoon, expire today. But the Junior and Senior Short Dances, which were held on Saturday evening, expire tomorrow. And half an hour later tomorrow, the video of Sunday's Free Programmes expires! :drama:

In addition, the Senior Men's SP, which was held straight after the Senior Pairs SP on Saturday afternoon, does not expire until Wednesday. Yet the Senior Men's FS expires the day before! :bang:

So, to try to make it clear how long you have left to watch things, I have produced a list. The segments are ordered according to when the videos expire on iPlayer. The BBC Sport website does not tell you when the videos on there expire, but I expect that it will be the same times as the iPlayer videos.

Hope this helps

Didn't know where would be best to post this, so decided to put it here as we would be the ones that would appreciate it most.

Somebody has launched a website which takes the BBC's digital teletext service, and reformats it to look like their old analogue teletext service, Ceefax. It can be accessed here:

https://www.nathanmediaservices.co.uk/teletext-viewer/

Anyway, the reason I am posting about it on a figure skating forum is that when I looked at the Main Menu, I saw the number for a page that I had completely forgotten about - the "On This Day" page. And when I opened it, I was shocked to find that the top story was a figure skating story! 😲

It just shows how times have changed in the intervening 26 years. Nowadays, you would NEVER get a figure skating story on the BBC's teletext service.

I really miss the old analogue teletext. It was so much better than it's replacement. The only good things about the digital service are the weather maps, and that we can read stories from regions other than our own.

This is really sad. I have always been a big fan of these two (not in the least because of my enormous respect for Zoe) who in difficult circumstances - I've read quite a few articles about training, costs, and so on - still managed to keep their heads held up high and compete with the best of them. Feel really gutted for them.

I'm afraid some sad news.

Zoe Jones has tested positive for Covid, so she and Pairs partner Christopher Boyadji have had to Withdraw from the European Championships. Read her heartbreaking post here. Sounds like it was to have been their final time.

So very sorry to hear this.

I agree, what Zoe says in her post does sound like this was to be their swansong.

This is just so cruel. Zoe does not deserve to have another milestone moment of her career snatched away from her. She had her only opportunity to compete at the Olympics snatched away from her by her own Fed back in 2002, and now 20 years later she has had her big goodbye at Europeans snatched away by COVID-19 in 2022.

I am genuinely heartbroken for her. I just hope that Chris and the kids are able to comfort her through this.

And I am so sad that, after all these years competing in Pairs, Chris is also missing out on his chance to say goodbye. But, I know that this thought will not even cross his mind - all he will be worried about now is Zoe. Because that is the sort of guy he is.

Zoe, Chris. You guys have put so much into this partnership over the past 6 years. So, I want to thank you for all the joy you have given us in that time.

And now that this chapter of your lives is coming to a close, I want to wish you all the best for the next chapter.

You guys have already proven that you have what it takes to be successful as coaches. 4 out of the Top 6 in Advanced Novice Ladies at Nationals last month says it all. So, I look forward to seeing you sitting alongside your charges on the international stage in the years to come.

I am proud to have been your adoptive father on Golden Skate.

Just a further update to let you know that the Provisional Entry List has been updated, and it looks like Ana and Luke have been called up to replace Zoe and Chris. I thought it would be too late to get them out there, but apparently not.

Given the close result at Nationals, giving each partnership a Major was the right decision. And I understand why it was planned the way it was - it makes poetic sense to have one chapter end before the new chapter begins. But, it is just unfortunate the way it has worked out.

Hopefully the Fed will do the decent thing and send Zoe and Chris to Worlds, so that they can still have their goodbye. They deserve it.

I agree. I'm not 100% sure if Zoe & Chris have the World Minimums (I wish there was a simple list we could go to, to see which skaters have, on the ISU site, that would be useful). I had also thought it was too short notice for Ana & Luke to replace them, but it looks like they've flown out today with Natasha McKay, Simon Briggs and Conor Stakelum who is replacing Samuel McAllister for Ireland who also has Covid.

There will still be time in minor competitions to get the Worlds minimums for Zoe & Chris after she recovers, and I'm 100% sure BIS will send them if they do.

But Good Luck to Ana & Luke. Graham Newberry, Natasha, Lilah & Lewis and Sasha & George in Tallinn. Quite a different looking Team GBR this year. :hap10:

Just found out on another forum that, although the "subscribe" button on the Eurosport Player now takes you to the Discovery+ subscription page, the old Eurosport Player subscription page that the button used to take you to still works.

So, if you don't want to fork out the £60 for Discovery+, you can still get the Eurosport content on it's own for £40.

Here is the link:

Hope this helps

Ah! I didn't even think of checking if the YouTube stream was blocked for us. I just assumed that it would be, and automatically put on the VPN as normal when I went to the ISU channel! :rolleye:

Simon Reed is commentating on the World Feed, and I have been watching it this morning. There was live tennis on British Eurosport 2, so the livear coverage wasn't scheduled to start until late. And, as it turned out, the tennis over-ran anyway.

When Eurosport did start, they had a completely different commentary team to normal - Oliver Wilson and 2011 British Ice Dance Champion Louise Walden. I have no idea who Oliver is. There is a golfer with that name, so it might have been him. But, it turned out that he was only temporatily in the seat, as Chris Howarth was with Louise when I returned during the first interval.

As I said, I'm listening to Simon. Is anybody out there listening to Chris and Louise? Is she good?

Thanks for the update @CaroLiza_fan

I've heard Louise Walden before, she's very bubbly and Northern. I will definitely tune in. Looks like Nicky Slater has been retired for good at Europeans. But they all suffer from the same problem on Eurosport Skating, including Simon, no research beforehand. I wish they'd ask Marika Humphreys-Baranova, former Ice Dance Olympian and Tech Spec, now coach. She has a wealth of knowledge.

Good Luck Graham!!!!!!!

Update on "Freeze", the BBC documentary about the British Ice Skaters' road to the Olympics: due to start on 7th February, BBC3/Iplayer.

So just as the Olympics kicks off and everyone is watching that, the BBC schedules this documentary series on British Skaters? Why didn't they schedule it leading up to Olympics? It might've helped some of the Commentators, speaking of which, has anybody been watching Eurosport Skating coverage recently?

Good grief! Watching the Rhythm Dance from European Championships yesterday on the Eurosport Player On Demand and Chris Howarth really does say TWICE in the introductions "Leah Fear"..or is it "Leelah Fear"? Who knows? Fear & Gibson are known worldwide now. But how CLUELESS can you be as a Figure Skating Commentator? Just not good enough!

Onto the European Championships Free Dance and Chris Howarth has disappeared. Instead a familiar voiced man who doesn't introduce himself but does voice-over work. He calls his Co Commentator "Louise Wheelden" instead of Walden. She doesn't correct him. @CaroLiza_fan may know his name. He said this was the highlight of Sasha & George's season as they hadn't qualified for Olympics, thereby forgetting the Worlds in March. Personally I thought Louise talks too much during the performance, even though what she says is mostly relevant and informative, though I find her voice a bit like a foghorn. You can hear in this video:

Chris Howarth returned for the final 2 Freedance groups, no explanation why he had disappeared? All very strange.

You know if Eurosport/Discovery expect fans of Figure Skating to pay for coverage, then provide decent Commentators. That means people who
a) know the technicalities
b) can pronounce foreign names
c) has a clue who skaters are and what kind of season they've had
d) essentially people who follow the Sport throughout the season Internationally.

I'm sorry to say this doesn't apply to any Commentator, not Ted Barton either, except Mark Hanretty.

Lewis Gibson has publicly spoken about being gay for the first time in an interview, and getting married during the Pandemic in a small ceremony.

There's a recording of the interview on the page.

Apparently more interviews on Sky Sports with both Lilah & Lewis to follow. They won't travel to Beijing till February 3rd.

That doesn't make sense to start the series after the Olympics have started. I too was expecting it to be used to build up to the Olympics. But, I suppose they decided to wait until BBC3 was back as a linear channel, as it would get higher ratings with being more widely available.

Granted, it's not a very common name. BUT, as you say, Fear and Gibson are very well known in figure skating circles now. Everybody with an interest in the sport should know her name and how to pronounce it by now.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I have no idea who he was. I haven't heard that voice before and, as you say, he didn't introduce himself. I thought it might have been the guy that was commentating at the start of the Men's SP (Oliver Wilson), but the voice was very different.

Is it just me, or does he sound like he could be from the other side of the Atlantic? So, maybe somebody over that side of the pond might recognise the voice.

But, imagine getting your co-commentator's name wrong! :drama: When she's (probably) sitting beside you.

Personally I thought Louise talks too much during the performance, even though what she says is mostly relevant and informative, though I find her voice a bit like a foghorn. You can hear in this video:

I didn't say this before, in case somebody got offended. But, since you have brought it up, Louise's voice was the reason that I watched the World Feed coverage rather than the Eurosport coverage. A commentator that always sounds loud and sharp is not my taste. Of course, it's natural and she can't help it. But, when I had the option of listening to somebody with a more calming voice, I took it.

Chris Howarth returned for the final 2 Freedance groups, no explanation why he had disappeared? All very strange.

I wonder - was Chris maybe commentating remotely from home in Chicago. If he was in America and there was connection issues, it could explain why he was late.

I have never been a fan of Simon or Chris commentating on their own. They have always been better when they were commentating together, bouncing off each other. So I cannot understand what the producers are thinking giving them so many solo assignments in recent years.

A thing that became clear many years ago is that Simon and Chris don't watch competitions that they are not commentating on. With Simon, you can understand this - he has other commitments (i.e. commentating on tennis). But you would think that Chris would watch all the Majors at least. After all, figure skating has been his life.

If you ask me, Simon and Chris have not been the same since that season that Eurosport did not have the rights. So many things changed in that time that they are struggling to get familiarised with the way things are now. Between them, they used to be able to fill each others' gaps in knowledge. But now the gaps have grown and their combined knowledge is not enough to fill the gaps completely.

In my ideal world, the ISU would get a permanent commentatary team for the World Feed coverage, and Simon and Chris would go back to commentating together on British Eurosport.

Having proved so popular with the fans, Mark would seem to be the perfect candidate for the World Feed... except for his "Dancing On Ice" commitments. But, from reading your comments about the first couple of episodes of the current series, the programme seems to be going downhill fast. So, it might be prudent for him to retire from it after this series, before it gets even worse and starts to tarnish him.

As I've said many times, I prefer having 2 commentators working together, so that we get different opinions and perspectives. To be honest, Ted's commentary in the Junior GP's has sounded tired for a couple of years. But, whenever he has had somebody sitting beside him, it has improved things.

With that in mind, I would love to see the ISU bring PJ Kwong into their commentary team, to sit alongside Mark in Seniors and / or Ted in Juniors. And maybe to fly solo if either of them is not available.

But, that is another discussion.

Excellent post and 100% agree. PJ Kwong is a great suggestion and as she's a linguist, her pronunciations would be a huge improvement.

The Olympic commentary team for the IOC World feed has been announced. Belinda Noonan, the regular Aussie Commentator who knows the technicalities. With.......Olly Hogben. Who, I hear you ask? I've been assailed by vile American Gymnastics fans laughing at me for querying who he was and asking if he'd ever commentated on Figure Skating before? Thank god for the Twitter block button is all I'll say!

Apparently they all consider him a genius, he thoroughly researches before commentary and does his homework. So that's alright then. In other words a total FS newbie. At Olympics.

So as it's all during the night anyway, I guess I shall just catch up whichever way I can. Probably on BBC iPlayer mostly or Eurosport Player, though iirc they did take the world feed on the ES player àt the last Olympics, so I may be dazzled by Olly Hogben's expertise yet. Lucky me. :rolleye:
