I love Loena. Despite the Russians being at this event, she at least was able to add a tiny silver medal. I was worried they were going to put her below Trusova. A clean Loena short program skate, should put her into the final group, at the Olympics now that her PB best score has gone up to 76. I’m so proud of her and she shows what is possible with just clean triples, as a lady.

Belgium is our good and friendly neighbour, so I wasn't that surprised when the Dutch skating website had a feature on Loena:

In summary: The title refers to her name 'Loena' which is already worth a fairy tale. Loena still can hardly believe it that she got herself a small silver medal. It feels a bit surreal. She doesn't really believe she might get a final one because the Russian women are just so good, and do things she can't. She tries to focus on what she can do, and she'll be happy if she shows her best in the Free. Her back hurts sometimes (she has a back problem at the moment) but thankfully not when she's skating. Too much adrenalin probably to feel pain. She was pleased her skates arrived on time, as they had been lost for a while after the flight. Her coach and brother Jorik is so proud of her. He's also realistic. In the Free you will need quads, and that's not what Loena does. That will lead to a gap in the difficulty in the (technical) elements. He's not worried: 'as long as Loena focuses on herself, and then points and good placements will follow eventually'. They train mostly in The Netherlands (Tilburg) as her home rink closed down two years ago. The rest of the interview focuses on the lack of support in Belgium, although they do get some funding after Loena's 5th place at World's in 2021. They're a bit jealous of The Netherlands where there is more support, especially in helping young talents.

Belgian figure skater Loena Hendrix shared her emotions from the end of the European Championship in Tallinn (Estonia), where she took fourth place. After the short program, the Belgian was second.

“I am very happy with my fourth place, but I would be happier if I did a better free skate. It definitely wasn't the kind of skating I was expecting. I tried to let go of the pressure I had after finishing 2nd on the first day and just skate for myself.

Russian girls are really very strong, I knew that they would beat me, so I just wanted to ride for my own pleasure. But after the short program, I felt something new, so I had to collect my thoughts. Now I will know how to deal with this in the future.

It was not easy for me to train before the European Championships. I had a lot of headaches, I was badly affected by the light and didn't get jumps and spins. I had to skate with glasses for two weeks. But this is not an excuse for mistakes in the free program, because the short one was good, ”the ISU press service quoted Hendrix as saying.

Loena is not only a beautiful girl and a talented skater, but also a wonderful person. I am very pleased that she received a small silver medal, and I hope that her health will improve.

I wanted to congratulate Loena on the 4th place finish at Euros 2022! I know she wanted to perform better (and CAN!) in the Free, but she was sublime in the SP, and I hope that when she looks back on this event she is proud of herself because she has so many reasons to be!

I assume next up is Olympics? And for that I wish her a complete recovery of health, luck and everything else good.

Hi,

Soon I hope to be in Beijing to represent Belgium for the 2nd time at the 24th Olympic Winter Games.

However, to make it happen I also need all the financial support I can get. If you also like to support me on my way to Beijing, please use the button below.

All financial support is more than welcome, no matter the amount, every Euro will make a difference to me.

If you like to contribute once or regularly on behalf of your company or business, I invite you to send me your company detail so I can provide you with an invoice for your bookkeeping.

Thank you for your help.

Hugs & Kisses
Loena

The RusFed is often criticized - and it must be admitted that there are reasons for this. But the Belgian Federation cannot (or does not want to?) finance the trip of one figure skater to the Olympics...

It is weird and I cant believe it really...Is it possible?
Unfortunately it's true. This is her official website. In addition, in 2018 it was about the same. The support from the Belgian federation is purely symbolic. It's a shame that such a wonderful skater is forced to raise money in this way. Here is a discussion on another site:

Me too. I hope that there will be many donations from Russia for Loena, despite the fact that her name was used here in an extremely unpleasant way in order to put additional pressure on Shcherbakova (with a view to her subsequent replacement with Tuktamysheva). Sane people, of course, understand that Loena herself has nothing to do with these intrigues.

An article with a story about how Loena's relatives watched her performance at the European Championships:

...
“Loena is in great shape”, her brother Laris also knew. Together with his wife Kirsten, his brother Rinze and his wife Eline and many relatives and friends, he attended the closing freestyle on Saturday evening in the Bemdkaffee at the Arendonk sports hall. “Everyone sympathizes. Our parents are not there because Loena still lives at home and they don’t want to take any risks to infect her for the Winter Olympics. What do we expect? Of course you hope that she skates the tiles of the roof. But above all, she has to enjoy it.”

The final really opens when world champion Anna Scherbakova puts in her best performance of the season and jumps from fourth to first place. “Not normal, those Russians”, says Laris. “It is anything but easy to compete against such a country. Real money is thrown at it. You will find an ice skating rink in every village. Now that he is gone in Turnhout, Loena has to train across the border, in Eindhoven and Tilburg.”
...

And Loena's interview after the end of the European Championship. Here she speaks her native language. Sounds very interesting, but I absolutely do not understand anything:

but Belgium as a country is not poor without resources. It is matter of choices then. And these are bad choices :(

I have noticed that the Russian media and Russian figure skating fans like Loena a lot.
This woman has had to stop due to injuries and then start again more than once but she's in a really good groove now.

But it's absolutely amazing that Loena comes from a country that has some money and a sports federation that has some money and she still has to raise money for a trip to the Olympics. Something doesn't add up there or they don't take figure skating seriously in Belgium. Belgium had some great tennis players for many years but not lately. Maybe the success of Loena will kick-start figure skating in Belgium.

Any chance Loena can learn an ultra jump or is she not small enough for that? I mean didn't Liza learn her 3A in her 20s?
