She won't lose her spot on the team event if that is what you mean. She will or should be ranked the #1 US ladies skater and will get to choose which segments she wants to skate in the team event.
I agree, the US needs Alysa and her potential to score big. With the exception of Isabeau, who won't be there, Alysa, when she's healthy, is still our best bet to have a lady in the final flight

I don’t think so. I think they will split men and dance. If so pairs and women will have to be skated by one pair/woman.

If the rumors of Russia using no substitutions for the team event are true, between S/K's injury and Russian men bombing every other event, Team USA has a good chance at gold.

The issue isn't whether the ladies will be split--I agree it likely will not be. But if Alysa wants to skate the ladies segments, she will likely be able to because she will be ranked #1 among the ladies.

The media (NBC) hasn't been hyping Alysa at all. They are mega-hyping Nathan Chen and mentioning only Mariah and Karen.
I agreed. Google search result - only ONE media (Today shows) talks about Alysa vs Simone. Other main US media outlet (CNN, Fox news, ABC news) don't mention Alysa at all. They all focus on Tom Brady's potential retirement.

Conclusion: There is NO media hype on Alysa at all. In general, most Americans don't know who she is. Alysa should not feel any pressure ( I hope). Americans only care about super ball and Tom Brady as of this moment.

I see what you were saying. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Wonder how those people will react when the Olympics roll around and if they go anywhere close to how we think they are going to go and Alysa is likely battling for 5th place at best
Hopefully, the fans will appreciate Alysa for skating well. The casual fans will be thrilled if she skates well, even without a medal. Only one team wins the super bowl but, it doesn't stop fans who love their home team. Trust me, the 49ers have broken my heart many times but, I still cheer for them.

Completely OT Mr Rice, but what a finish for the Niners this weekend:clap:

Also, more to the point of the discussion here, I think skating fans and skaters take to heart the "next big hope" more than the casual fan. If someone tells me Suzy Q is a sure fire gold medalist in cross country skiing, and Suzy Q doesn't medal, I think, too bad that's a shame and forget about cross country skiing. If she wins, I go, yay Suzy Q, and then I forget about cross country skiing.

But I don't think the pressure is good for the athletes themselves.

Right...it was such an awesome game and we cheered so loudly that our neighbors called. We all had a big laugh.

I agree. They really have to split dance, and Nathan probably doesn't want to do both SP and LP when it is the individual gold medal that he mainly cares about. I still say put Alisa Liu in the team event. It's her only chance for a medal and she's been a solid competitor all this time.

I don’t know what to think. I’d disagree that she’s been a solid competitor this year. Really starting from last year when she got 4th at Nationals. She did well at Cranberry but she has pretty much lost her triple axel and was in what, 3rd? coming into the long at US Nationals when she had to WD due to Covid. I’d say that this year Mariah has been more consistent but in past years obviously Alysa was. I hope Alysa has recovered well from Covid and I hope they all test negative and are able to enter China to begin with. After that I’m sure US Fed will pick whoever they think will do the best and some of us will disagree and others not so much. Alysa is about to be thrown on the proverbial trash heap in favor of Isabeau🙄. I hope she rises and keeps shining. 😀

You are Gracie Gold and Mariah fans, I got it. It doesn't mean that you have to bash/distort Alysa's solid records to boost your idols.

Here are the facts and numbers:
Alysa got 4th at Nationals. You forgot to mention about Mariah. She was in 5th, lower than Alysa.

Alysa not only did well at Cranberry, Alysa actually did pretty well and very consistent in ALL competitions this season. Alysa is the only US female skater score over 200 in ALL competitions this season. Alysa won THREE (x3) GOLDs this season. GOLD in Cranberry, GOLD in Lombardia, GOLD in Nebelhorn.

Alysa beat Mariah with big margin at Cranberry. Alysa 205.74 vs Mariah 179.42
Alysa holds the highest score this season: 219.24
Alysa holds the highest average score this season.

Mariah and Karen are in the same category: sometimes wonderful, sometimes hot mess. If you look up Mariah's history, she never win any national championship before. Mariah didn't do well at World and USA didn't have 3 spots for those years. She placed 9th once and 12th twice at World in the past.

It's true that Alysa's 3A is inconsistent. 3A is very risky element. Not only Alysa, both Young You and Sasha don't have high success rate this season. If Young You goes for 2A instead of 3A, she can win a medal at 4CC. If Alysa goes for 2A, she can beat Mariah at Nationals short program. So far, Alysa has 100% success rate on 2A this season. Why Wakaba won silver at Japanese national? Wakaba played it safe by jumping 2A instead of 3A in the short program. I do hope that Alysa stop from trying 3A. 2A+fully rotated triple/triple is enough for her to be in top 8 at Olympics. By the way, you also forget that Mariah is losing triple triple and Mariah doesn't has any triple axel at all.

However, I do agree with you that Alysa should not skate for team event. If She fall on 3A in team event, all haters will come out and trash her on social media everywhere.

I’m not a hater. I’m not bashing Alysa. I saw her at Cranberry and she skated great.

I hope no one would bash her for missing a jump. Jumps are missed all the time and there’s no reason to bash a skater over it.

I think I said USFS would pick whoever they thought would skate the best for the teak event and some people would like their choice and others would not. That is true regardless of their choice.

Completely agree with you on that. Frankly, we don't know what's Alysa's latest health and her shape at this moment. She had covid and hence she didn't show her best at Nationals. She lost significant training time because of that. I think US fed knows her better than you and me. If Alysa is not back to her prime shape in time, it's better for her to skip the team event. She fell on 3A at nationals and negative comments like "she is messy" come up on social media everywhere.

I hope US fed stop from betting on her triple axel. If your name is not "Kamila", you can't land triple axel all the time.

Playing it safe is only good if you want to finish above inferior skaters. If you want to place above superior skaters you have to be aggressive. Liu's best bet is to go for it and hope tech caller is lenient. If so, she might get away with her UR 3A. If caller is strict, she will probably get called on her combo anyway. She is #1 of a strong Fed, so she should get some slack probably. Above all, she should relax, enjoy herself, drop the forced constant smile and forced arm movements, and let her natural charisma shine through.

I think that if Alysa does the team event, USFS should give her strict instructions not to go for the 3A in the short program. It's too risky, and Alysa would be able to easily place third in the team short program with a clean 2A. She should go for it in the free program, since she's unlikely to mess up her other jump elements, and the free program is a lot more forgiving than the short since there are only five skaters in teh free program.

Likewise, if Mariah did the short program, USFS should also give her strict instructions to only do a triple-double. Her triple-triple is too inconsistent, and falling on it could leave her tumbling down the standings.

Once again, we really should not be crowning this team Olympic champions when they haven’t even stepped on the ice in Beijing yet. Much like S/K and Misha, anything could happen from here to then.

Not to mention that Russia continues to be quite strong in all four disciplines and Nathan is unlikely to choose to do both events. Russia was deemed the likely winner by several points on the team event scale, with the US not coming very close (and that’s with Nathan skating both events).

I hope everyone skates well and that whichever US lady skates in the team event (this is the US ladies thread after all) does a good job. Social media is not kind (as we saw in Tokyo with poor Simone).

Alysa's triple axel had gotten much more consistent this season, so nationals was heartbreaking, for Amber too. I was really surprised that Amber was the second alternate instead of the first bc she has senior experience unlike Lindsey, and her second place finish last nats, plus sixth at Skate America and seventh at NHK should have been good for something.

It depends. Does Koari has triple axel? Does Anna has triple axel? Liza lost to Anna because she fell on 3A in SP at Rus Nationals. How Anna beat Liza at Rus National? 2A+multiple 3/3 in later half.

Young You's 3A also costs her a medal at 4CC. If Alysa jumped 2A instead of 3A at NHK GP Short program, she could win Silver medal. She was less than 2 points from winning silver at NHK GP.

The best layout for Alysa is something similar to her Lombardia layout.
2A in short program + 3/3 in later half (please, no more triple axel in short program)
3A in long program + multiple 3/3 in later half

If Alysa skate clean with just one triple axel in long program, she can score over 220 easily.

The best strategy for Alysa is to simplify choreography - longer jump set up, easier entry to the jumps, less hand flappings, reserve stamina for 3/3 in second half program.

It's not about playing it safe. It's about maximizing points based on your current ability. If you name is not "Kamila", you won't be able to land triple axel all the time.
