Emily Hughes Withdraws

Does anyone know if the US have to send 3 ladies this year? Does the USFSA have the option to send only 2 and maintain 3 spots for next year (assuming the 2 sent finish high enough)? I believe there have been other countries who have not assigned all their spots at Worlds.

Only the top 2 placements count for determining next year's slots, so there's no advantage to not sending a third skater.

This wasn't always the case, which is why, e.g., Ukraine didn't send a full team in 1997, the first year of the current point system.

Some countries don't send full teams because they literally don't have enough senior skaters . . . especially in disciplines other than ladies (or the ladies they do have are not old enough). Or they don't want to spend the money to send skaters whose best is not good enough to make it to the final round.

1. May I ask again, what is the bye-rule of USFSA for a skater to be selected for Worlds?

2.
That would be so cool if Emily skated for Canada! It would definitely jazz things up for the senior womens and Joannie Rochette and Mira Leung would be big questions marks. I hope she one day joins Skate Canada, though, that's wishful thinking.
I read here many posts like this, but the rule for Olys;
http://www.canoeicf.com/site/canoei.../Beijing 2008/Olympic Charter Rules 41+42.pdf

42 Nationality of Competitors*
...
Bye-law to Rule 42
1 A competitor who is a national of two or more countries at the same time may represent either one of them, as he may elect. However, after having represented one country in the Olympic Games, in continental or regional games or in world or regional championships recognised by the relevant IF, he may not represent another country unless he meets the conditions set forth in paragraph 2 below that apply to persons who have changed their nationality or acquired a new nationality.
2 A competitor who has represented one country in the Olympic Games, in continental or regional games or in world or regionalchampionships recognised by the relevant IF, and who has changed his nationality or acquired a new nationality, may participate in the Olympic Games to represent his new country provided that at least three years have passed since the competitor last represented his former country. This period may be reduced or even cancelled, with the agreement of the NOCs and IF concerned, by the IOC Executive Board, which takes into account the circumstances of each case.

Can any knowledgable person clarify this further?
It seems to me that it would take a lot of energy making other federations agree on Emily switching her representing country.

Well, I finally have one positive thing about Emily withdrawing from Nationals... my son has decided that since his favorite skater: Ta Da (as Emily is called in my house...) isn't going to be there, he'd rather go to the Freestyle Motor cross show... which means of course, that I get to watch Nationals in peace... without him running around the house yelling: "wow, she's hot!" and "Ta Da!!" everytime Emily hits a move on the ice...

So the US probably won't get three spots to Worlds, but my introverted self will be happy and since its all about me, then that's something;)

I was on Getty Images and found pictures from yesterday of Emily Hughes taping an episode of Rachael Ray at Bryant Park. She's already skating again.

I can't tell if it's the lighting or the hair but it looks like she put some weight on.
