ladies junior short

She did a triple toe - single toe - double toe combination which was then judged an illegal element. So 0 for that.
As well, the triple loop was downgraded.
It is nice to see the protocols being updated immediately instead of waiting until the weekend is over to see the protocols.
I was surprised at this one too. What would cause her to do an illegal move?
Hope she does better in the final but it looks grim in terms of any chance to make the jr national team
Do you think it was a tad harsh or right on (the illegal move decision?)
I hope so, but it will be tough now to make the national team at this point which must be very disappointing for her
I would guess a bad landing on the triple toe and an attempt to salvage the combination without realizing that whatever she did between the triple and the double was going to count as another jump.

Rules are rules....she added a single toe inbetween the 2 jumps which wasn't allowed in the short. Obviously whe wanted to salvage the jump, but in the end it ended up costing her. Not harsh at all

So why not give her the components as 2 separate jumps? :scratch:
A combination jump of double and triple or triple and triple is a required element in the SP. (Edited to say we're talking about junior SP, so double+double is also an option.) She didn't do a combination that met those requirements.
It would be possible to make rules that would handle that situation the same as a step out or fall from the first jump followed by tacking on the second -- give credit for the first jump only, with -3 GOE. But that's not the way the rules are currently defined.
In the long program the three-jump combination would be fine, and if there were steps or turns between it would either be a sequence or separate jumps.

Pretty much all the triples in the protocols are 3T and 3S. Only one 3F and not even 3Loop. It appeared more like a novice competition than juniors. Pretty sad state of affairs indeed.
I totally agree fumie_fumie. I am wondering what our future is in ladies figure skating in Canada. What are we (Canada) not doing in our teaching of these girls to get higher caliber skaters? Subscribe to icenetwork and watch the regionals and sectionals in the USA. They have girls that are amazing skaters and they are doing this at very young ages. I just don't see that here in Canada.
Expect more surprises in the free skate as none of these junior ladies are known to be consistent.
Like I said in a previous post a triple toe and salchow with mediocre PCS scores will win nationals.
As for the future of our ladies, we have to be looking at what we are doing wrong after the pre-novice level. Canada has had pre-novice winners with triple toe and salchow but somehow those skaters never gain any other jumps even as they move to senior. Even worse those skaters lose consistency with the toe and salchow as well.

Yes, nadster, you have been spot on so far. I am appalled. An SP program consisting of 3t-2t, 2a and 2loop should not be a winning SP.
As for your question on what we are doing wrong with our junior ladies, I have no idea. Maybe, parents do not like their kids going through the rigours of practices - I am assuming based on my experience with school parents whining about the amount of homework at school. Somehow, I look at our senior ladies and a lot of them seem overweight for a skater and under-trained. I wish I had an answer for that.
