Evgenia Medvedeva

Someone that can speak Russian can translate what Zhenya wrote on her last story on Instagram today? I guess is something about the current situation going on but I would like to know more

How do you think this situation is going to affect Evgenia's advertising contracts?
I know this is not the time to think about this, there are people dying, also my country will be affected because we export to Russia and Ukraine but I know that they will also have difficult times economically from now on. I can't help but worry about the athletes I love.

I'm sure financially she will be affected. Hopefully, she will still get some income. I miss her and worry about her.

She doesn't seem to spend her money frivolously, so she has probably retained most of her earnings. The house was (or is, if she has a mortgage) surely expensive, but I can't imagine that it consumed all her wealth. She will take a big hit from the sanctions, as she's probably already lost 30% from the crumbling of the ruble (assuming that all of her money is just sitting in a bank), but she had to have started from a position of at least a few million in USD, so she should be alright, even in the long term. Plus, she is still a big draw within Russia, so even with her nation ostracized, she should be able to make money within its borders from ice shows, tv appearances, ads, etc. I think Russia will suffer a depression, not an apocalypse. She will be okay. In a worst-case scenario, she is young and beautiful; she can sacrifice love and romance for security and marry an oligarch.

As a Russian civilian, she will probably take a hit financially, seeing as their economy has essentially been nuked. There won't be as many opportunities as before for her to earn money. Most rational people will want to spend their money on practical needs like food, instead of on things like ice skating shows. But Evgenia seems to attract a larger international fanbase than most of the other Russian skaters. She could have a very lucrative career as a show skater in countries like Japan where she would make a killing doing commercials. Her competitive career is over, so it's not like promoting her would come off as supporting Russian skating in any way. As long as she's not an outspoken Putin sympathizer (cause...yikes), it is unlikely she will be personally shunned by companies for situations outside of her control. Her biggest obstacle would be getting out of of the country with flights refusing to go there, and doubly so if Russia decides to close its borders. I feel very sad for all the Russian athletes, and ordinary Russian people who did not want this war. I also feel sorry for those who have been brainwashed to support it. All will pay a price for it. No matter what "side" you are on, everyone will loose in some way.

The insinuation that Evgenia should essentially sell her person to a Russian oligarch for financial security is truly disgusting. It should not even be entertained. What on Earth were you thinking?

OMG yes what a horrid thing to say I agree 150% and the same for any of these other skaters.

A worst-case scenario is, by definition, the worst possible case, the worst circumstances imaginable, and in those instances, pragmatism takes precedent over taste. I am not suggesting she should sell herself to an oligarch; I am pointing out that her very worst option still includes relative wealth and luxury.

Do you guys think her latest instagram post (pic taken form plane) alludes to her leaving Russia? If so, where do you think she is going?

I used Google translate.

I'm so proud of her. Posting such a message takes a lot courage.

Last week, I felt like I've matured a dozen years. But I don’t want to grow up like that: I’m just a girl who has believed in the ideals of art and kindness all her life, has always been naive and funny.

And I would like to remain naive and funny. Just flip through funny videos from TikTok in the morning and start the day with a positive, and not update the news feeds of political publications with trembling hands.

Yes, I understand: many are now much worse, more terrible, more unbearable. And so every day a thought lives inside me - I would change any of my goals and dreams for peace, mutual respect, the ability to negotiate without sacrifice. All the best!
