Senior Ladies SP

Don't get my wrong, I love Wagner's skating. But if other skaters are getting slammed for wrong edges, I think it's unfair to them if other obviously wrong edges aren't called.

Honestly, I just want the judging to be fair.

It's the "Oksana Baiul" rule coming into play: If you're cute and bubbly, then deductions don't apply ;-)

Based on youtube videos I've seen of Mirai, she reminds me a lot of Mao Asada. Anyone else feel this way?

I'm so excited with this result. I always felt Mirai was better than Zhang.

Kimmie will make the World team this year simply because the better skaters are too young. Next year and 2010, she's going to be off the podium and off the team.

I think we all need to realize that Kimmie was never "great" to begin with. Her claim to fame was the jumps - 3/3 combos and 3Axel. She only landed the 3Axel the one time (not clean) and her 3/3's have NEVER been properly rotated, ever (from what I've seen). She simply lucked out in 2006 by getting those combos ratified and facing poor competition.

I somehow hope she pulls it together for Worlds, though. She and Wagner NEED to get the U.S. 3 spots for 2009. If Kimmie screws it up and only 2 out of Mirai, Zhang, Wagner, and Flatt get to go to Worlds next year, I will be VERY mad and throw the ugliest item possible out onto the ice when she finishes her performances at 2009 Nationals...I'm thinking some kind of deformed teddy bear that has "YOU SUCK" painted in bright red.

 I dont care who ya are, that is classic.

I find it rather ridiculous that neither Wagner nor Zhang (and Flatt, to a lesser extent) got slammed for their flutzes. They've gotten edge deductions for every single one of their lutzes this season.

Are you serious??? Wagner's is especially blatant. That's horrific if they just overlooked that.

I hate to say it but it may be time for KM to step aside if she doesn't rebound in the Free. I mean how the HECK did some of these younger ones place so far ahead of her??

Um, she fell?

What does that even mean, "step aside"? Should she retire immediately? Forfeit her Worlds spot? Skip the Grand Prix series next season? Be banned from Natl and Intl skating events? If a World Team member should "step aside", what should the lady who finishes last in this competition do? Bow down to anyone in this competition without a drivers license? Geez.

Ice is slippery. One day you win, the next day you mess up. One, two, or three bad competitions in a row doesn't mean Kimmie needs to consider herself defeated forever and retire. I hope this kid makes the World Team next year to silence all the people who have been so harsh on her. I didn't know you were supposed to quit skating the minute you lose a competition.

. I hope this kid makes the World Team next year to silence all the people who have been so harsh on her. .

Just watched Kristi's brief appearance on today's show this AM. She said,"definitely root for Kimmie to skate the best for herself at the free. " Kristi also said, "Kimmie will make world team" (considering US has 3 slots, and Nagasu / Zhang are not able to go b/c of age)

Just got through watching the ladies SPs. Interesting. I thought the best, most polished performances were clearly Flatt and Meissner. Wagner was a totally different style — very aggressive, I liked her too.

I liked Nagasu and she is a force to be reckoned with, but I thought everything from her program to her performance was still a tad junior, and I'm not terribly disappointed that she has another year of juniors to work on the performance aspects a bit — and she should get some choreography and music that are more elegant — she is so small and young that I think it's a mistake to highlight that with her program choices if she wants to be taken seriously as a senior ladies skater. No doubt she's impressive on the jumps, spins, spirals etc.

Zhang was not exactly hard done by. It was an okay performance, but with technical jump errors plus the fact that she crawled across the ice she was so slow, she certainly wasn't cheated out of placement. Hopefully she can shake the nerves and step it up for the LP.

I agree

After watching the SP on TV I think Flatt should have won, and won big. She was the 'whole package' so to speak, whereas Mirai was a bit sloppy in parts and yes, "juniorish". Also I hope that Mirai does something about that swinging freeleg into jumps.... Mirai is going to be wonderful in a few years, but this year Flatt was wonderful.

Mirai skates faster, her Spirals are better, and Flatt was lucky not to get her 3-3 downgraded.

Also, FYI, using "serious" music doesn't make you more mature. Flatt isn't better in the PCS areas for me than Mirai.

Flat has mature programs, mature costumes and tries mature skating. But she is still 15! I find Mirai's skating, the whole approach (cute youthful costume etc.) really refreshing and absolutely honest. It's like "here I am, I am fourteen, I am a little girl and I am out here to have fun and I love little pink dresses with shiny flowers on them".

Ladies figure skating is really paradox. On the one hand they want little girls who they can call wunderkind, who can master the jumps often better than the older skaters because they do not need much strength to pull their immature bodies up into the air - but on the other hand the judges and the fans are not supposed to notice that they are so young, the girls have to skate with maturity and wear costumes that sometimes look just ridiculous on a little girl and skate to music and in roles they possibly can't understand.

And someone who looks like she is having serious fun out there and is skating to peppy music is "too juniorish". It's really hard to understand.

I liked Kimmie's short, though my heart breaks over the fall. It's very interesting to me, choreographically. Also love the music cuts.

Flatt, esp., and also Wagner, have that "senior" polish and look to their skating, to me. Nagasu's getting there, but still a little juniorish.

Zhang looks like a little girl out there -- and of course she's only 14. However, her program was hardly a disaster and I thought she handled it afterward very well.

But I do wish Flatt would get more credit for her presentation.

OTH, several flutzes were overlooked -- please be consistent, tech panel and judges!

Now that I have watched ladies SP....I'd just like to chime in and say that I itotally enjoyed Rachel Flat, Mirai Nagusu and Katrina "?" the most.

I think one of the reasons the younger skaters do so well is they don't quite get the full jest of all the pressures that come with being in Seniors competitions. I'm not saying it's the only reason, but I think it plays a part.

I hope Kimmie will do real well in the LP. As they always say, though, defending the title is always hardest.

What makes you think that Nagasu is going to do another year of Juniors? She's already been to JW (and won the silver medal), she's won the JGPF and will probably win JW 2008. She's probably going to be on the Nationals podium, maybe even on top of it. She will be age-eligible for ISU Championships next season, and as JGP Champion, she will certainly get GP invitations so why on earth would she remain a Junior internationally?

Incidentally, Mirai is a month older than Caroline Zhang.

Mirai was overmarked in the PC scores. She reminds me of Mao from two years ago: technically good (better spinner than Mao at that age) but very juniorish. Thought it weird that she scored better than Kimmie in the PCS. Kimmie so much better this year on that count. No more stiff arms. Strong and mature and expressive. If she could only get her jumps back. Also feel that Flatt and Wagner deserved PCS as high as Mirai if not higher.

Mirai moves with style.

Kimmie...not so much. Kimmie has gotten better, though.
