Mens Free Skate

here is the trooth both after johnny weir short program..

can anyone tell me who was his roomates?...

I think he was just joking and referencing the tv-show The Real World.

I agree that Johnny was robbed. He had a great performance with a lot of heart in it. I'm so happy that he finally went for the quad. Evan was uninspired, his jump landings were all shaky and honestly, his triple axel in the short looked about 1/2 turn cheated to me. Besides, his program looks exactly like last year's Carmen. No way should have his PCS been as close as they were.

However, part of me also thinks Johnny robbed himself by not adding another combo. At this stage of the game, you can't leave any points on the table.

I agree that I would have had Abbot above Carriere. Carriere was bland and uninspiring and has a very nerdy persona on the ice. Abbot on the other hand had great musicality, and a fabulous performance. He's so smooth over the ice.

What a heck of competition! The best Nationals ever! Congratulations to both Evan, Johnny and Stephane, great job guys!

Evan won FS fair and square, b/c Johnny only did 2 combo jump, while Evan did 3; Evan's SLSS is level 4, Johnny is level 3; in addition, Evan's jump entrances are more difficult too. I actually think resentation wise, Evan is more contageous, he deserves better PCS between the 2.

Team USA has a strong world team, GO USA!

For those of us not in the know about MTV, that makes no difference at all. It is completely off the wall to say something like that on live t.v. Do you really think that is acceptable just because you like the way he skates??? It's not. It's also not funny even if it was meant tongue in cheek. The comment about not liking Evan was deliberate and not tongue in cheek. It was just rude. Saying the word "b****" isn't acceptable either. In his attempt to be different and witty he comes across as a jerk. End of discussion for me.

I don't watch MTV and even I understood it as a simple joke.

Good night and sleep tight.

Um...the comment about his roomates was just in refference to the truth booth they use on the reality MTV program "the real world" in which the people who live together in the house go into a private room and talk about different situations going on in the house(he felt as if he was on that show having to talk about his skate in that booth) His comment was not really about his roomates because he has "no" roomates. People always try to read too much into what Johnny says! BTW...he did great today and should of totally won.

You beated me to the punch, as I was going to explain it, but I se you already did. And I agree that people sometimes want to read too much into what he says. When he said that, inmediately I knew what he was referring to.

kyla, I understand your discomfort but they aren't scored on what they say....just how they skate. I don't believe this program was anywhere near Evan's PB - his Olympic Long or last year's nATIONAL LONG and that is what is bugging me.

Weir left points on the table and he knows it better than anyone...but the jumps he did give (yes 2 footed quad and glitch with last flip...but the rest) were truly great; he was calm, the flow and speed and control were all there and frankly, it didn't feel to me that it was like that in Evan's.

Anyway - great comp - 2 champs who will continue to grow. For now, can anyone help me: I don't know how to read the protocols to determine the level given and I don't know how to read the notation for the spins....is there a link to 'guide to protocols' somewhere???? thanks in advance

I cannot believe that Evan won over Johnny. I thought this new system was suppose to be better but apparently cheating still is going on. Evan looked very sloppy and slow. No wonder skating is not doing well in the ratings when viewers see the same stuff still occurring. It is very discouraging.

I think Johnny definitely outskated Evan, most of whose landings were far from solid. Johnny should've won. Period.

For something that is so special and rare as a tie, USFSA should celebrated by having co-winners or at least a spin and jump off. Taking the winner of the Lp is the lamest way to breaking a tie.

Also, Evan wisely completed 4 jumping passes after the 2 minute mark to get extra bonus while Johnny only completed 3 jumping passes after the 2 minute mark. Team Lysacek won because of wise choreography and strategy. Evan had 4 level 4 elements and 2 level 3 elements while Johnny had 3 level 4 elements and 3 level 3 elements. Lysacek had the more difficult program and it got him the close win, despite the fact he wasn't the cleanest skater out there.

I am not Johnny's biggest fan. He lost me after missing the bus at the Olympics. In contrast I became an Evan fan for life after his gutzy skate in Torino and in general I prefer a less balletic style in skating. That said if I saw both programs with out commentary or scores I would have guessed that Johnny won.

I really likeJohnny's approach this year. He seems so much more grounded and athletic. He looks like he is working hard, and listening to his coach. I could have lived with out the roommates comment but that's Johnny.

Both of them looked sooooo uncomfortable in the interveiw together. I liked Evan's comment about how he was impressed that johnny's "done this" 3 times but he has hasn't. So far Johnny has defended twice.

Congrat's to both for a great performance. I hope they don't get hurt trying to beat each other at Worlds.

Well chalk another point up for the decline in the popularity of figure skating. I was watching the broadcast with my husband, who never watches skating. I managed to convince him to watch it with me, with the promise of the great Johnny-Evan rivalry. Then they get the EXACT SAME SCORE, but they give the title to one and the other finishes second. "What a lame sport" is what he said. *SIGH*

I am looking at the protocols for the free. I think Johnny should move one more jump after the second half, his triple axel 'cause it is sooooo good he would get good GoE. Also maybe making another combo or adding a third jump to the combo he has after the second half. His USp3 has a low base value, so maybe changing that element to another one. In general terms, although his program was techinally scored lower than Evan (on the total base value), Johnny won more points by GoE than Evan did in his own.

Internationally, Johnny adquired his personal best scores this season, so he has a good program for Worlds, just needs to adjust a few things here and there to get more points on the technical aspect.

I knew Johnny's fans would be grousing. But he lost it on tiny points. Still--really, they TIED. Holy cow. Can they keep this up until the Olympics?

And YAY STEPHEN! Though I could have lived with Ryan Bradley in third. Abbott, sadly, bores me.

The Free Skate has always been the first tie-breaker, even under 6.0 judging.

At the 2002 Olympics, after adding the factored placements for the SP and the LP for Slutskaya and Hughes, it was a tie.

Slutskaya: .5 x 2nd + 1 x 2nd = 3.00 total factored placement.

Hughes: .5 x 4th + 1 x 1st = 3.00 total factored placement.

A tie. But Hughes won the gold medal on the tie-breaker, the LP.

There are things Johnny can do, and needs to do, to get more points in his LP but he should have won anyway.

Lysacek didn't get properly deducted for the mistakes he made, plain and simple.

Also, according to these judges, Lysacek's straight-line footwork sequence is the BEST FOOTWORK SEQUENCE THAT HAS EVER BEEN PERFORMED.

That was one heck of a competition.
I was on the edge of my seat. I thought Johnny was going to win...he really did skate well. I am a big fan of his skating although I am not too keen on his off-ice persona.
I am not an Evan non-fan, I like him too. I just prefer Johnny's skating style over Evan's for the most part. Although Evan is growing on me more and more.
Congrat's to Evan on the win.
I hope they continue to push each other and skate well and give the other countries a run for their money at all upcoming World's, GP's and finally the Oly's!

True, I think some of the PCS, from the comments I am hearing about the performance, don't match very well.

Out of the five marks, Johnny won over Evan on Skating Skills(7.96 over 7.79) and Performance/Execution (8.14 over 8.07, very close). This particular one is too close, I want to see the videos, but if Evan's jumps weren't that good (and he did loose points due to the negative GoE), how can he be so close to Johnny in execution, when most of his elements were clean? Again, I want to see this on my own to get a better understanding, I am only commenting on what has been said here.

They were both tied on Transitions and Choreography, and Evan won Interpretation with 8.14 over Johnny's 8.11. Talk about close!!
