Sota Yamamoto

The Minato AQULS Trophy (formerly named Howa Trophy) will take place from July 2nd through 3rd.

So far Sota's name is not on the entry list and only Kimichika Wada is entered in the senior men's category. Tatsuya will compete as a junior.
Some of the women on the entry list are: Rino, Mana, Mako, Yuhana, Nana, Chisato etc. among 24 entrants in the senior category.

Admission is free (ID card is required to enter the first floor area).

ETA & Correction: Sorry, the wrong info. The info I cited above is from the JSF website showing last year's entries and results.

Thank you! I hope Sota's healthy. I was looking forward to reports of Sota's new FS frm the Howa Cup, but I don't want him to compete when not in competitive shape. I am relieved he's probably stopped trying to get a 4F, but even 3A can get one injured, so I won't be at peace until a message from Sota pops up on Unlim or Twitter, reassuring fans that his feet, legs, hips and back are alright. 🍀

Sorry, I gave the wrong info. The JSF website linked to was about last year's Minato AQULS Trophy. The correct info is:
Date: July 1st (Fri) - 3rd (Sun), 2022.
Please disregard my previous post. No info about the Minato AQULS Trophy (Nagoya-city Skating Competition) on JSF site yet. I got the schedule from this site: https://plaza.rakuten.co.jp/resocha21/diary/202206140001/

Therefore, don't worry about Sota not on the list. JSF hasn't released the entry list yet, or rather, no info at all. My apologies.

Whew, massive breath of relief from me! 😮‍💨 I'm glad the link was old.

New world standings, Sota's #28. Better than in the previous years, but the absence of Russians helped him a lot so although I'm a fan, the move upwards is not really his merit. His headcasing cost him a lot, I hope he's ashamed of that, and is actively doing something about it. Had he not imploded at Nats and got picked for 4CC, he'd probably be in Sena's place, #26. It stinks that someone like Levandi, no quad, no 3A, is several spots higher than Sota due to the number of competitions he can go to. Sota has a formidable lineup of Japanese quad jumpers ahead of him, and unfortunately, will likely lose GP spots to all of Shun, Miura and Tatsuya, who are below him in WS but have big medals. He's so much better than all of them, full-package-wise, but he got several GP opportunities, and never placed higher than #6. Food for thought for him.
I'm glad he apears healthy, but for crying out loud, he has to do something about that head of his. It's such a waste of talent to always see him around WS #30 not because of lack of talent, but because of mental weakness. I hope he makes an effort this season, and stops digging himself into an even deeper hole by publicly saying things like 'I didn't have strength to fight in the FS'. JSF would be fools to give more than one GP to a skater who underpeformed at each GP that has come his way, and gives up so easily. Hoping some tough love from JSF becomes a wakeup call for Sota. He can do way better.

Free admission

The short programs by senior men & women will be on July 1st and the free, 3rd, both in the morning.

Thank you! Do I understand it correctly that Sota is the only one in senior men, judging by the '1'? I'm super relieved he's there of course, because it means he's healthy, but I wonder where Kimichika is, and why Tatsuya doesn't go head to head with Sota in seniors to push himself (and Sota, too). Maybe it's for the better this way though...

Do I understand it correctly that Sota is the only one in senior men, judging by the '1'?
I wondered about it too. According to the outline of the competition, the event is organized by Nagoya City and,
"Participants must be registered skaters with Nagoya City Skating Association or Aichi Prefectural Skating Federation for the year 2022. Nagoya City Skating Association membership is open to those who live, study, or work in Nagoya City."

Tatsuya entered Kobe University in April 2021 and moved to Kobe, but at the time of last year's competition, he probably was still a registered member of Aichi Skating Federation. As to Kimichika, I wonder why he didn't enter the Minato AQULS this year. Perhaps he was not ready yet or not in good physical shape?

Video of some moments in Sota’s recent online monologue show is now available to Sota Unlim standard members. He answered questions submitted by members in advance. Some topics are:

• Sport Motion Analysis Application
“Well, from my camera roll, can you see it? It's like this, and it starts. I have an app like this, and the failed jump, this is a triple axel, and the failed jump is on top, and the successful jump… doesn't show up [laughter]. I wonder if it will show, oh, it did. [laughter] Well, there is an app that allows you to check the upper jump and the lower jump, the failed jump and the successful jump, in slow motion, like this. I'm sorry, it's a little blurry [laughter]. I practice by checking the difference in the way I jump, which is really slight, but I practice while checking the difference myself.”

• Favorite Steps and Turns
When I say rocker, there's a turn you do with one foot that goes from outside to outside, or if it's inside, it goes from inside to inside, and I think that turn suits me rather well. Is that a good fit for me [laughter]? Is it [laughter]? I guess I rather like that turn.

• Osu Rink
“I sometimes go to the Osu rink. I go to say hello to sensei, and sometimes I go to Osu for electrotherapy, and when I have a minor pain, there is a manager in Osu, and I go to see him for various treatments. I go there now and then.”

• Cats
“I have a gray cat, a black-and-white cat, and a black cat right now. I have three cats, and the gray cat is very affectionate. Well, they are all very friendly. The black-and-white cat and the gray cat are very affectionate. The black cat is rather quiet and reserved, while the gray cat comes to me a lot. He is capricious, but he does come close to me. So he would stand in front of my room for a long time. I try to keep them out of my room, but sometimes I have no choice but to let him in. He seems to like my bed and my bedding which is soft and fluffy. When he comes into the room, he goes straight to the bed and rolls over, and what he does is so lovable. So we always play with each other.”

• Boots & How to Tie Boot Laces
“Now I'm using Jackson, and the blades have been changed to Matrix. Before, I was using the music called Pattern 99, oops, not the music, but blades, but this season, I changed it to Matrix. And the boots, you know, the ones I brought in this time are these, since the ones I always use have been left at Chukyo. I brought in Jackson boots. (showing his boot) I'm using Jackson boots, though a different model. The bottom hooks here should be tightened twice, because the bottom part of the boots usually becomes pliant after a while. And the top hooks should be fastened once, and then tied in a normal bowknot. At first, I fasten the hooks one time while the boot is sturdy. Then, when it gets soft, I want to make it sturdy here, so I use tape, or I tie the shoelace twice. … Oh, yeah, this cover is a tiger blade buddy. It's old and I don't use it now. Here is the old cover.”

• Practice Video
“Then I'll show you the practice video of the new program. This one is almost 4 minutes long, so the new free program may be a little bit choppy and hard to see, but please take a look at it. This is a video of when I had been choreographed for only 2 weeks or so, I mean, the program has been modified since yesterday, and the choreography has changed since this video, so I hope you can enjoy it and watch the competition in a week's time.”

Thank you for this summary! ♥️ The black cat sounds a lot like Sota himself: "quiet and reserved". That's exactly what Sota seems like to his foreign fans, and it's not just my opinion. ;) Does it say 'bed' or 'futon' in Sota's interview, by the way?
I don't know enough about skating to have an opinion on Sota's steps. To me, all of his steps are nice, but IMO the wider, the bigger the flair, the better.
Hopefully using the slowmo comparison app will help Sota. I don't think it's his takeoff that's the main issue, but if keeping it in check boosts his confidence, then problem solved, regardless of the means. ^ ^

The link to Minato Trophy isn't working at the moment. Is there any other link? I really want to see the results on Sunday

Entries for Gensan Summer Cup are up, Sota will be participating, in addition of Kazuki, Kao, Lucas, Sena and Tatsuya. Tough field!

Yeah, it's going to be a nail-bitng competition. I hope for both Kazuki and Sota on the podium! 🥈 🥇 In addition, I think Rainbow says the summer camp will take place at the end of this month.

I was very glad to hear the final Howa/Minato Trophy results today. Sota scored his best combined result ever, 271.41 points :)
Results: https://www.jsfresults.com/non_resp...e_top.htm,local/2022-2023/fs/22/394/index.htm
His 4-3 and 4-2 are back, his axels seem good, he went for 3 quads in the free, and it looks like he's working on the 3F3Lo (beautiful combo). In the FS, he did a 3F2A, but I wonder if the goal is 3F3Lo as they're both edge jumps, aren't they?
Sota splat once in the SP and once in the FS, but that is no matter to me. The most important thing is to see him genuinely grin in the photos, andthat he apparently FOUGHT. He didn't give up after the falls, didn't do his "I didn't have the strength" thing, and scored great. Well done, I think this is exactly what JSF wants to see. 💪 Now, what does Sota have to do to get lv4 steps? O_o
Now, if he can only keep skating like that throughout the season, and most importantly, at Nationals! The right timing is the key.

Here are two photos from Online On Ice after the competition - https://twitter.com/online_on_ice/status/1543581749867069440 The tweet also says Sota's favorite part of the Rachmaninov free is covering his face. :ROFLMAO: Sota? Lurking and hiding? No way, color me surprised! :drama:

Sota's costume, it's really obvious it's inspired by Hanyu's Origin: https://ameblo.jp/ching-shenlong/image-12751611511-15142019422.html

Good job and rest well, Sota! :bed: And keep the strong mindset.

Does it say 'bed' or 'futon' in Sota's interview, by the way?
He said futon "僕のベットの布団が好き" and I assume it's a comforter on his bed.
I think Rainbow says the summer camp will take place at the end of this month.
I heard that the senior summer camp will be from July 7 thru 10 in Karuizawa, Nagano. but the link to the source is broken now.

BTW, Yuhana and Rino were in DOI show in Yokohama from July 1 thru 3, as well as other top Japanese junior and senior skaters, so that explains their absence from the Minato AQULS Trophy.

According to Twitter, Sota will show the Minato Trophy program in the new Unlim talkshow. I don't know if it's for general members or premium members though.
Also, Chukyo University offered a peak into their training environment for athletes, and here's Sota working out in a gym: https://twitter.com/chukyoAT/status/1543806930925518849 He's been working hard!

Yay, he's back in TV channels' good graces. ☺️ Thanks for the find! That's a determined look you showed at the camera... Good boy! :D There are also some reports out there about fans brandishing their banners in the audience (well, seeing as he was the only senior boy out there, it's not hard to see how his banners ruled the venue during Men SP/FS). And about Sota waving at them as he was leaving the place (probably after the interview linked above). He was apparently one happy boy after the event, and I hope he enjoyed a relaxing evening with a tasty dinner, hot bath and cuddly cats afterwards ^ ^ 🐈‍⬛🐈
