2022-23 Japanese figure skating: Pairs and Ice Dance

I really hope Shingo finds a partner soon. He's a rare talent, the most musical among the Japanese ice dance men along with Daisuke. It's a shame he's had such bad luck and couldn't progress due to splits.

Well. Kana and Daisuke are now assigned to Denis Ten Memorial. I like them a lot, but it's disgusting to see how the ones in JSF's good graces are sent to CS this year, and others are shut off from their chances. (Wakaba and Kazuki were IMO only sent so that JSF isn't so obvious in getting their faves competitions). JSF is so biased and unfair it makes me sick.

They were last year's champions in pairs, yes. But somehow they are not listed as the seed skaters, according to the selection exemption list by JSF. That's what got me confused.

I agree it's confusing. Hope they are ok!

Congratulations to Sumire Yoshida and Ibuki Ogahara (Sumiibu) on becoming national novice ice dance champions!
I think they are training with Cathy Reed.

Haru Matsuzaki and Haruki Motomura (Haruharu) came second.

Yes, I would say they were sharper/more precise at DTM, most noticably on the MiSt:



Kana's RFO twizzle was also slightly more stable (even though it wasn't bad at SkAm and I don't think she deserved the level 2 call there). The most significant difference is that they got 6 rotations on the lift and managed to (just) stay under 7 seconds. If they had skated like this at SkAm they probably would have scored 74 to 75-ish. Sigh...

This is so sad. It happens in other countries as well of course, but Japan has so few pairs, and these two had potential. Perhaps it was a money issue, pehaps a family one, perhaps university or commute incompatibility. If Shoya enjoys FS, I hope he can return eventually. Wishing good luck to Miyu in finding a new partner soon. :pray:
 
Murakami/Moriguchi scored 149.08 at Junior Nationals.
They have been invited to Senior Nationals next month 🙂

Kida/Morita scored 161.92, winning Junior Nationals by 28 points!

I would have loved to see the junior ice dancers at the senior nats to expand the field. Great to see 4 ice dance teams participate which I think will grow further with time.
 
Happy to have been wrong about there only being 3 senior dance teams at Nationals this year (didn’t follow Sectionals and am probably the last person to find out through the Nationals entries lists 😅).

Yoshimitsu Ikeda and Haruno Yajima found new partners after their split last season, both of which also competed in singles this year according to Skating Scores - Saiko Kikuchi at Tokyo Regionals and Yajima’s partner, Tsutomu Matsui, advanced from Tokyo Regionals to Eastern Sectionals, but didn’t make it to Nationals. Then there’s Akari Kinoshita & Takahiko Tamura, who apparently turned senior this season. Unfortunately none of these teams, nor Takahashi/Judd, have the TES mins for 4CC though and if I’m not mistaken none of them are scheduled to compete internationally to try aquiring them in time (someone please correct me, if I'm wrong)? It would’ve been great, if Japan could’ve sent 3 dance teams this season...

6 dance teams at senior Nationals!

I think you are right, none of these teams have received international assignments and I think the only competition that would qualify in time for 4CC is the winter universiade, which JPN have already named singles entries for.

Murakami/Moriguchi did really well at JGPF, hopefully they have a great time at nationals and train for junior worlds.

I'm surprised they just had lost luggage and aren't marooned in the Vancouver airport. Reports are that it is a real zoo. Some passengers had to spend the whole night on a plane because they couldn't find a gate for them to disembark. Hopefully it will be cleared out by the time they pass through on their return trip.
 
This is very interesting.


Looking at the selection for Worlds, they make it clear that participation in Nationals is mandatory for selection, with no exceptions, except for teams that have finished top 3 at Worlds and have a valid excuse for missing the competition. For this reason, RikuRyu can (and will) be chosen for Worlds.

However, here is the selection criteria for Four Continents (run through Google Translate, because I'm too lazy to do a good translation right now):

Four Continents Figure Skating Championships
(Men's and Women's Singles, Pairs, and Ice Dance: 3 slots each)
(1) Male and female single
At the end of the All Japan Championships, a comprehensive judgment will be made from those who meet one of the following criteria.
A) Top 10 of All Japan Championships
B) His top six ISU World Standings at the end of the All Japan Championships
C) Top 6 ISU Season World Rankings at the end of the All Japan Championships
D) Top 6 ISU Season Best Scores at the end of the All Japan Championships
E) At international competitions dispatched before the All Japan Championships and domestic competitions designated by the strengthening department
Season Best Total Element Score Top 6 players
* Participation in the All Japan Championships, which is the final selection, is mandatory. (The selection of alternates is not limited to this.)
However, a player who has a track record of finishing in the top 3 of the world championships in the past, due to unavoidable reasons such as injury, etc.
If the player cannot participate in the All Japan Championships, the same player before the occurrence of the injury or other circumstances that caused the non-participation
The results of the competition will be evaluated according to the above selection criteria, and the selection may be made while looking at the state at the time of the Four Continents Championships.
(2) Pair ice dance
Selection will be made based on a comprehensive judgment in consideration of international competitiveness.
* Participation in the All Japan Championships, which is the final selection, is mandatory.

So while the "world championships podium" exception remains in place for the men's and women's skaters for Four Continents, for whatever reason, it is not in place for the pair skaters and ice dancers. Participation in Nationals is mandatory, without exception, in order to be selected.

So I guess...Japan is not sending a pairs team to 4CC?
