2022–23 Canadian Figure Skating

^^ The younger Canadian skaters in pairs looking up to current and former Canadian pairs girls for inspiration, would likely not have been born when Deanna was skating singles in the U.S. They can, of course, do the research and look back at some of Deanna's amazing singles performances.

Deanna is a role model on many levels, not the least being retired for 17 years due to injury, and then launching a successful competitive comeback as a pairs skater! Plus in the interim, she achieved success in her career as an esthetician! Her skincare knowledge surely comes in handy as a competitive athlete in a performative sport.

I wish Deanna/Max so much luck at 4CCs this week! It should be a good tune-up for them in the lead-up to Worlds, where the Italian teams fresh off their European medals, will have Italian politics behind them. More on that in an appropriate thread. Meanwhile, Brava Bravo to Canadian pairs and Canadian ice dancers!!

The junior men in Canada look interesting as well, even if they steadily pursue their aesthetic talents first over going too hard in the direction of quads. I think steadiness and confidence-building are key when it comes to quads. Pushing too hard can break bodies, minds, and careers.

I'm also really interested to see how Fiona, Kaiya, Justine, and Madeline further develop, in addition to a few other Cdn ladies. I wonder how long Lia will continue to pursue both singles and pairs. It takes a lot to excel in both. She's pretty amazing.

I had never heard of Deanna until she came to pairs... so if I can look her up, skaters would do too

When Lia started her partnership with Trennt, she had already won a summer international competition (in juniors) and was set up to compete on JGP etc. Her programs were ready and she had no idea how well they would gel together.

At this point, we will have to wait and see how they fair in ISU championships, but next season will be the one of choices for her. I think there are good arguments for her to continue singles as she did seem to manage it well this year, as well as arguments for her to focus on pairs. I wouldn't surprised with any direction she would select.

I'm really proud of the Canadian pairs, who I thought all took a step forward at 4CC in spite of the blatant favouritism shown to the American pairs.

While Deanna and Max obviously would have wanted at least a silver here, their FS was a big step forward and a necessary step towards worlds, I think. They added the second side by side triple, and Deanna put a hand down on the throw flip but did not fall on her chest the way she did at nationals. And she finally looked healthy again, so presumably now they can finally get in some serious training before worlds. With them already looking a ton better here, I think they look really promising.

Pereira/Michaud have given notice that they will be a force to be reckoned with. Didn't get nearly enough credit for the triple toe, double toe, double axel sequence that they did here (by far the most ambitious jump combo even attempted at this competition). She has come so far on the throws. I just expect them to keep getting better and better. So impressed with how far they've managed to rise in such a short period of time. I expect their PCS to rise if they stay consistent like this.

Laurin/Ethier are fighters. I don't think they're going to let Skate Canada forget about them. I think they have so much potential, and they're already trying so much difficulty. Just so much to like here.

Keegan really rose to the occasion. I confess, I was not expecting him to do this well. At all. He has not had the greatest season up to now. I would love nothing more than to see him repeat that performance at worlds, but if this is the pinnacle of his career, it's a really bright one.

Keegan brought the house down. I am so happy for him. He entirely deserves all the joy that this result brought him. It was a fantastic skate.

I am also very proud of Conrad. He skated quite well. Judges were very stingy with him in the SP.... they scored him slightly better tonight but he desrerves mid 7s... not 5.5s like some judges scored him in the Sp.. 70 for the skate he had is cheap..Pretty much everyone scored higher than him apart from the really early guys... i hope he goes to worlds as he has had 4 decent skates if you add 4cc and nationals. Stephen had one great LP out of 4 programs. Anyway.. Keegan made me so happy tonight... i guess my white sage smudging worked lol

Canada can be proud of its athletes this weekend. 4 medals at 4CC. Some PBs... I think this was the best result at 4CC since over 5 years or so.

The emergence of Lia has really boosted my outlook on the future of our pairs teams. She and Trennt look like they could join Marjorie & Zak as young medal contenders in the partnered disciplines. We’ve needed more solid young talent for a while.

Conrad obviously has a lot of work to do, but it seems like Ravi’s coaching is seeing some dividends.

Madeline is having a really rough year, unfortunately.

I checked both the Skate Canada website and the ISU entries... it's not there yet... but they would need to pass over me with a zamboni to silence me if they do not confirm Conrad.

I really am hoping to see Conrad. In my view he won the skate off with Stephen easily, with both a SP and FS that got him in the top 10 at 4CC. And now I am finally going to watch the men, the pairs and the ID!

Well, that was enjoyable. Keegan's performances made me cry a little bit. I've never seen him skate so well. I don't really care if it's silver or gold.

The spot should go to Conrad. He showed up at 4CC. He was second at Nationals and also now has the second highest SB. He earned it!

The top US team wasn't even there. Chan/Howe had their best skate of the season. The Japanese team was expected to win, and did. Too bad Deanna and her partner weren't at their best, but they did win a medal.

Let's see how the US vs Canadian teams do at JW which will be in "own the podium" Canada.

I've been shocked to see that no Canadian women (junior or senior) have been sent to the ISU spring competitions. Madeline Schizas has struggled in her last internationals, with the only substitute being the equally struggling Gabby Daleman. Surely there have to be other promising skaters who would benefit from exposure to international competition.
