Cool. It’s for the best they give more structure to the choreo sequence, but I guess we’ll see them invalidated again.

Hands down, for me Keegan Messing should have won 4CCs, on merit. He was wonderful! 
He brought it, technically, emotionally, and with superb interpretation.
Both Kao Miura and Shun Sato are excellent jumpers, but they don't pull me in at all with their lack of aesthetic qualities. The music plays in the background while they just run through the jumps and other elements.
Miura worked hard through that program and he clearly wanted to win. But I disagree with the scoring. The judges padded Miura's tech score during the kiss 'n cry review, and gave him too much on pcs to ensure there would be no doubt he would have the points to pass Keegan. The judges apparently decided that Keegan should be happy with second place. The program of the night was Keegan's, not Miura's.
I can admire young Miura's amazing jumping ability, but that's not all figure skating is about. It's par for the course that there won't always be fan consensus on judging outcomes in fs -- there's way too much subjectivity and political jockeying in the sport. For me, Keegan skating so well and giving us the full package in his final season, he should have been rewarded with the win! But Japan fed gets what they want here, just as they will at Worlds.

This is very interesting, thank you for sharing.
So... if a skater wanted to include an open axel in the choreo sequence, that would be allowed since <2 revolutions? I would love to see delayed open axels make a comeback. There were some huge glorious ones in the 70's and 80's, always crowd pleasers.

I respect Miura for being able to hold the performance together after the ovation for Messing. Probably skating in Japan’s start-studded field helps. I do think he offers more than jumps, but I agree that Messing offers more so far in delivery, but this is the case where I would both agree and be a little disappointed no matter which way this tie went.

Miura had the hardest jump outlet and skated rather cleanly, both SP and Free Skate. Of course he won.
The judging is totally in line with the general way scoring has been done for years. How else would Chen have dominated? I'm not saying it's the way it should be, not at all, but if you do it this way, then at least be consequent about it, and that's what they did.

Another great event. Sadly, my temp Japanese lady seatmate couldn't take the hysteria screaming of the Japanese /US person next to her and won't be back. But I think Paul will be. I have ear plugs.

You know, if there's one thing I will miss about Nathan, it's his consistency. To see Jimmy fall so far from the podium has to be hugely disappointing. We'll see how Ilia and Jason do at Worlds. Extra thrilled for Keegan!! I hope he's loving every minute of this season.

But seriously, it's time for Jimmy to get it together. There are some good young American men in the pipeline, and it's not going to take much longer before he's relegated to "underperforming guy with quirky programs, and there are plenty of other options."

I love me some Keegan as much as the next person, but I disagree that he deserved the win this time. I do agree that it was close, but over two programs, I call it for Miura.
Miura was ahead after the SP by 5 points. Miura's free skate in real time was underscored. I specifically saw the 4T-3T he did (wonderfully) and the tech box came up 3T-3T and wasn't adjusted upward until review during the Kiss & Cry. I don't think there was any "padding" going on. I also thought Miura's PCS was accurate relative to the scoring of Keegan and the other skaters. I thought the tech panel and judges called things fairly as they saw it in real time. A post-competition look at the protocols doesn't reveal anything outlandishly marked for either Kao or Keegan.
Your last two sentences are mind-boggling--in one fell swoop, you are explicitly stating that Keegan should have been given the win because he skated well and it's his final season, AND that the Japanese Fed is shady. I cannot agree with either of these points.
