2022-23 Russian Local Events – Discussion

Yes, she was considered a skater with a lot of promise for quite some time, as she was attempting the 4T at a time most of her other peers were not yet trying quads/3As (She was 11). She was never the most stable skater, nor did she have amazing results, but people were optimistic about her future, especially after she managed to land the 4T once or twice in competition (with some execution issues, but that's not unusual for a new jump).

I don't think her coaches have chosen the best strategy for her, especially as her body type was already very different at 11 than that of the pioneers of quads, like Trusova or Shcherbakova, who were tiny and super slim at 11/12. Her technique isn't great, and as she grows, she's running into similar issues as Sofia Samodelkina, just at a younger age.
That sucks, I do feel for the girls like her and Samo. Quads are difficult jumps to learn and the toll they take on the body is no joke. So to see these girls not even profiting from learning those jumps in the long term is very upsetting. IK some slaters just wont ever flourish in seniors but seeing Samo who was one of the 2 leaders of her gen struggle this much in her 1st senior season is so heartbreaking.

Yes, and I always have to wonder what could have been if they maybe were taught a different technique, or if they had been training for quads, and not already doing them at a young age.

Because the truth is, while some body types negatively affect rotation speed, these are also usually the same body types that can generate a huge amount of explosive power with the right training and technique. Think of Kaori, or Mana Kawabe, or Wakaba Higuchi, or Ami Nakai, or even (to mention a Russian) Liza Tuktamyheva. Of course, they are in good shape and slim, but they are much more muscular than many of their peers. They're also some of the skaters with the biggest jumps.

Varvara attempts her 4T again no luck this time:console:

Varvara came out of nowhere for me this season, she has become much more stable jumper during this season
She looks dispointeted even tho she did great :(

Not Milanas best free but still a really good one especially considering she just competed few days ago and has been traveling non stop, sadly the 4S didn't work today it did look pretty rotated tho.

for a second I thought she had that 3A but she fell:console: Her 3A is so big ,floaty and airy🤩
Overall this might be the best we have seen from Lidia this season, her jumps look so secure and big here :cheer2:
Im happy after the disappointment of Jr Nats and RCF, she can end her season on a high note:clap:

Shame Valeria couldn't repeat her clean sp performance in the free but this girl has so many good qualities, im super exited to watch her in juniors.

Maybe the big jumps are more related to build, especially thighs build, than technique. Because i woundn't put Sakamoto in that list for good technique.

The jumps she gets exceptional size on have good technique - 2A, 3Lo, 3S. Her Lutz is somewhat small, and her 3F is not exceptionally big for a toe jump, though it's definitely not a small jump either.

I also didn't say good technique (though that would of course be ideal), I said different technique. Techniques can be bad in different ways, and thus affect a certain body type differently. A low pick ("full blade" take-off - Apart from some exceptions most skaters don't actually drop their full blade, and even fewer skaters don't pick at all) is going to make a jump smaller, but a powerful jumper is not going to have issues with height even then. A technique relying on the twist of the upper body, however, is not going to work for a broader skater in most cases, as they experience more air resistance and can't achieve the high rotational speed necessary to get around fully. Also, it's not just jumping technique that will affect the size and consistency of jumps. Kaori (like most Japanese skaters), has very good skating skills that allow her to efficiently build speed, which allows for bigger jumps with a body type like hers (That's the reason her 2A is so extremely long even though the height is not necessarily exceptional - Difference to Liza who is much slower but gets much more height and less length on her Axels).

Noo popped axel :palmf:
well Vlad recovered from that axel pop well, I was so worried he was going to pop the 3lz in the combo as well, since he has had struggles with the lutz this season but he got it done:clap:

hopefully he will bounce back during the free:console:
