The alexa and brandon is a rather different and exceptional case. Nothing to do with figure skating in general. Usually, skating venues buy music licenses to play "ALL" music at the venue, this would even include music played during ice resurfacing or free skate sessions for commoners like us . The licenses fees are collected by one music copyright association in the country of the venue. The music association will send money to composers registered with them. They don't collect data about what was played or not. It's a blanket license. Composers earn very little money through this. Where they earn money is with commercial use of their music, for instance, if a film maker wants to put a specific song in their movie.

Hmmm, interesting. So sounds like the licenses bought by the skating venues don't include license to play the music in Youtube videos, which is why many videos are taken down due to copyright issues?

In that case they should include the licence to play the music in Youtube videos in their purchase, or get the ISU to pay all of it... but it's ISU afterall, what can we expect
