2023-24 British and Irish Figure Skating

Sad to see Miura/Kihara have withdrawn from Skate America BUT excited to see Ana and Luke have been called up! Lots of luck to them!

I am off on holiday, so I guess I will be figuring out how to watch stuff once come back!
Anastasia and Luke at Skate America? Wow!! That is quite a coup for them. I know they did the Sheffield GP last year, but that was because they are British. They probably would not have got a GP event otherwise. Getting chosen by the US federation for their GP is a big achievement.

Does anyone know why Alexa Severn has withdrawn from the FP at Tayside? I hope she isn't injured...

When did we last have a pairs team at Junior Worlds??! Congratulations to Lucy and Kyle on achieving the technical minimums on both programmes, and on their win at Tayside.

Challenge accepted.

By the way, as far as I know, Tameron is still the reigning Northern Ireland Junior Ladies champion. (Or is it Senior? I can't remember. Anyway, as you have probably worked out, it hasn't been held for a long time!)

Wow! In the 1981–82 Season edition we had two entries!

And Jean-Luc's Dad was half of our partnership at the first Junior Worlds!

Clive (Shorten) never told me he did pairs at that level! Or, actually, at all... You wait till I see him! He's still a great skater and an excellent coach. Doesn't get to do it much since Plymouth rink closed, but the rink at the Eden Project is now open until February half term, so he'll be coaching there.

I thought substitues aren't generally chosen by a federation, that the ISU bases it on world ranking/top scores.

There's a list of GP alternates for all disciplines (everyone in the top 75 SB list of the last season without two GP assignments, excluding those who have declined to compete in the GP circuit, are not Senior-eligible, competed at a JGP this season or have split), and for non-host spot withdrawals, federations are free to choose anyone from the 10 highest ranked skaters on that list (excluding skaters belonging to countries who already have three entries at the event, or who are already entered in the same event, of course).

I'm guessing that in last-minute replacements like this, they might sometimes get away with choosing someone from lower on the list if there was nobody else who would be able to travel within the short timeframe, but they could have also chosen to leave the spot vacated. 🤷‍♀️

The same happened at her JGP assignment due to an injury. Perhaps that's still an issue?
That was Arabella Sear-Watkins, not Alexa Severn (their names are a bit similar!). Arabella had a groin injury from a fall during one of the practice sessions at JGP Istanbul. I had a look the other day, and cannot see any sign of her having competed since. The GB senior qualifier she competed in was earlier.

Alexa completed both programmes at both of her JGP events. She was under-prepared for her first one because she replaced Daria Dalgich (who was injured) and only had a couple of days notice but, as far as I know, Alexa wasn't injured during either of her JGP events.

Those names aren't really similar. Just mixed them up!

So, I guess we'll just have to wait and see if anything appears anywhere by Friday.

Right, it's now Thursday, and there's still no sign of any skating on Viaplay, Eurosport, Sky, or any of the other broadcasters that we were looking at.

HOWEVER, all of the livestreams for the World Feed coverage of Skate America are now visible on the "Upcoming Livestreams" page on the ISU YouTube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/@SkatingISU/

I would say that is a good sign that the streams will NOT be geo-blocked for us when they come on-air.

So, I take it this means that Viaplay has already handed back the rights in the British Isles, and nobody else has bought them.

Well, at least it means we will be able to watch the skating for free. Just a pity that it is online only, and not on linear TV as well.

I can’t see any figure skating live streams on YouTube and still nothing on Eurosport. Yet the ISU still has Eurosport listed as our broadcaster. So annoying.

The YouTube streams became geo-blocked today. And there is no sign of skating on any of the broadcasters I have been keeping an eye on.

Yesterday, we thought everything had been worked out. Now, five and a half hours before it is due to start, we are back to not knowing where or if we can watch it!

This is beyond ridiculous now.

So frustrating, was hoping to watch this, I managed to watch the Europeans and Worlds on the ISU challenge last year. 😩

I've just been watching the pairs short. You need the Opera internet browser. Turn the inbuilt VPN on and set it to 'Europe'. Then go to the Skating ISU youtube page. I've not idea which country Opera uses as its European country, but it's clearly one that isn't georestricted!

There's actually an easy way to find out - look at the YouTube logo in the corner.

The "Europe" option on Opera's VPN used to use the Netherlands, but for some reason it changed to using Sweden in the middle of last year's Senior GP Series. And this meant that using Opera's VPN no longer got around the geo-blocking because Viaplay broadcast the skating in Sweden, and we all know how protective Viaplay are of their rights.

But now that Viaplay no longer have the rights in Sweden, it is getting around the geo-blocking again. Thank goodness!

I have got into the habit of doing all of my online skating viewing on Opera. Even when I don't need the VPN switched on. It's just handier to use the same browser all the time for watching skating.

I think you'd have to set a VPN up on your laptop and then connect that to your TV (using the TV screen like a computer monitor).
Well yes but that somewhat defeats the object of using the TV, making it more complicated not less 🤣

Ugh I am disgusted with the whole situation. Useless tv companies.

Skating doesn't attract many viewers here, so there isn't the money in it for the TV companies. I'm just glad at the moment that there is a way we can watch it - I did think a couple of days ago that we might not be able to at all.
