2023-24 British and Irish Figure Skating

It looks like Graham Newberry is not competing at British Nationals (I saw this in a different forum). That's a real pity. Does anyone know if he's retired/injured?

Sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere how do you watch the Grand Prix series in the UK?
For Skate America I used the Opera internet browser which has a free inbuilt VPN. You need to turn the VPN on and set it to 'Europe' before you go to the Skating ISU youtube page. Last year, the ISU stream for Skate America was geoblocked here (but could be viewed with an appropriate VPN), but the other senior GPs and the GP final were then available. I don't know whether the same will happen this year.

Hmm. I've just had a look, and he doesn't seem to have competed anywhere this season. He seems a bit young to retire though. Edward Appleby seems likely to overtake Graham at some point, but I am not sure he would have done so this season. It doesn't seem likely that Graham would be trying to switch countries. He has dual citizenship, but that is with the US where he would be unlikely to have any opportunities to compete internationally. I hope he doesn't have a big injury.

Without Graham, we don't currently have any men with the technical minimums for senior worlds. :frown: Ed Appleby, Freddie Leggott, Ken Fitterer and Henry Privett-Mendoza have the minimums for Europeans, and Ed also has the SP TES for senior worlds but he is almost 8 marks off the FP one. If Ed was able to get the FP TES as well then we could send him to senior worlds and send someone else to Junior worlds (Tao Macrae and Arin Yorke have the minimums for junior worlds as well as Ed, but would probably struggle to get beyond the SP).

My dog Willow got me introduced to the British Pairs Skaters at Skate America. I was walking outside the arena waiting for my relatives to finish watching the medal ceremonies when a nice man (later identified as Jason their coach) beckoned us over to meet Willow. He introduced Ana as a British Pairs skater and I told him how great it was to meet them. I said that I was the fan that held up the British flag when they finished their skate and that I had that flag in honor of my late wife who was from Malvern near Worcester. Jason then introduce me to Luke and then said this is Jenna. My comment "Jenna McCorkell?" was greeted with a nod and I said that I remembered her well as well as her husband Kevin and I had brought a Belgian flag with me as well. We had a nice long conversation and then Jason said they were all headed out to get a pint:).

During the whole conversation, Ana was kneeling down on eye level stroking and talking to Willow :love2: . I was extremely impressed with how sweet Ana was and will be a dedicated fan of hers for life.

I apologize if I have the wrong short name for Anastasia but I think Ana was what Jason used when he introduced her. They were such a nice group of people and made it a very pleasant and happy way to end the evening.

Awwww. What a lovely story.

I've always had a soft spot for Jenna, not least because we have so much in common. We're pretty much the same age (she's 13 months younger than me). Our hometowns are only 40 miles apart. We both had our first experiences on the ice at the same rink in her hometown (which has since closed 😞 ). Plus the fact that being from Northern Ireland meant she had to battle against the odds to get to the top of British skating, and not only did she do it, but she dominated it for so long.

And I was a fan of Kevin and his skating from long before I even knew that he and Jenna were an item. He had a style of skating that I just loved. Such a shame that he had so many injury issues, because he was so good.

Was Kevin with Jenna? He was looking after most of the Irish skaters (from both sides of the border) at the Tayside Trophy the week before, so it would have been pretty hectic for him to get to Texas, bearing in mind that he was still in Dundee on the Wednesday. So, I guess they split duties.

Chris Howarth on commentary kept saying that it was Simon Briggs that was with Ana and Luke. So thank you for telling us that it was actually Jason, Simon's twin brother. That makes more sense, because it was Simon that was running the Tayside Trophy, so he would have needed to be there to the end. Plus, from what I gather, Jason is actually based in America.

You know, over the years, I always got the impression that the whole team from Dundee were lovely people. So, I am glad that you got to meet some of them, and found the same.

From what I have picked up, Anastasia Vaipan-Law does use "Ana" as the shortened form of her name. So, no need to worry there. And anyway, given how taken she was with Willow, I don't think she would have minded if you had got it wrong. ;)

Thank you for sharing. It's always good to hear stories that show that the skaters are genuinely lovely human beings.

And I'm so glad you had an enjoyable time at Skate America.

Kevin was not here. From the little bit that Jenna said it sounds like they both have a hectic schedule. I believe she commented that she would only see him for a day or two when she got home and then he would be off somewhere for something to do with skating.

Your comment about skaters being lovely human beings strikes a strong cord with me. My late wife Celia and I started going to junior competitions in 2007 with a trip to Oberstdorf. There were few people that attended that were not competitors, coaches, officials, or organizers. So we got to meet a number of parents and officials and a few of the skaters. Everyone we met were really nice people. Celia and I never had any children so it was nice to meet some and realize that the world was in good hands if there were more like the skaters. We met a man who had been an official photographer for the skating events and he once said that he had met less than 5 skaters that he didn't like (and it may have been only 2 or 3).

When we went to Junior Worlds in 2008 in Sofia (we were big fans of Mirai Nagasu) we were the only fans that had traveled to see that competition other than one man from Germany. We spent most of our time in the company of a group of mothers from Canada who were all lovely people.

According to the ISU, British Eurosport should provide us with coverage in Ireland and UK but I sadly seems there will be no TV coverage at all, what is happening on Eurosport player I haven't checked yet

Hello. Long time no speak! Good to see you on here again.

Trust nothing the ISU says!

Eurosport put out a statement a few days ago about their Winter Sports coverage:

https://media.discoverysports.com/p...over-with-wall-to-wall-world-cup-coverage-on-

The final footnote is probably the most important bit for us:

ISU Figure Skating, ISU Speed Skating and Short Track World Cup coverage excludes Denmark, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the UK and Ireland.

It still doesn't provide clarity for those of us in the British Isles. Viaplay was supposed to be showing it in the UK this season, but then they announced that they were pulling out of all markets apart from the Netherlands and the Nordic countries. And we don't know if they still have the skating rights, or if they handed them back.

All we know is that there has been no sign of any skating coverage on either Viaplay's linear channels or their website.

As you probably know, it was only the UK operation that Premier Sports sold to Viaplay. Premier held onto the Irish operation. So, I haven't a clue if anybody owns the skating rights in Ireland.

What we in the UK have been doing is watching the World Feed coverage on the ISU's YouTube channel through a VPN. And that method would also work in Ireland. But, that is not much use for people like you who live in areas that do not have great internet.

I really wish British Eurosport hadn't lost the rights. Because what we have now in these islands is a real mess.

Hello, yes, long time, I have to say I am not so invested in FS these days, as I used to. Departure of my favourite Mikhail Kolyada hit me hard. If there was TV coverage I'd certainly watch recorded programs as it is not I am not even particularly upset, with everything that is happening in the world right now, it seems to be so insignificant. Hopefully better times will come. Hope all is well with you.

I am a huge skating fan and have only recently discovered this site. I've had eurosport since the early 90s purely to watch the skating. Gutted it's no longer being shown. Really hope we don't have to rely on BBC hit and miss coverage with awful commentary to watch major events like Europeans and Worlds. Hope they will be on YouTube at least!

It looks like Skate Canada will also only be available with a VPN. The ISU appear to incorrectly think that Eurosport still have the rights. @Royston and @Tutto I posted some instructions a little bit further up this thread which explain how you can watch the senior GP events using the Opera internet browser and its (free) inbuilt VPN. Hopefully we will be able to do the same for Europeans, 4 continents and Worlds. I think Junior Worlds are normally shown on the Junior GP you tube channel.

That's frustrating, I was really hoping to watch on the ISU channel, I am not good with technology so wouldn't be able to set up a VPN, I guess I will watch the Russian grand prix, at least I have been able to get that 🤞 . Hope this gets sorted before Europeans and worlds, I don't want to have to rely on the BBC coverage either, the female commentator is so bad!

Skate Canada have a stream on their website which can be watched without a VPN. https://skatecanada.ca/2023-skate-canada-international/#live-stream

You need to use the forward and back arrows on the playback window to move between the different streams.

Edit: the initial window says video not available, but they are - I've just watched the Pairs short programme on there (the ISU one on youtube isn't available due to a copyright claim).
