Sendai is rather to the North of Honshu island, and colder (there was snow during the Notte Stellata shows last weekend!) so cherry trees blossom later than in warmer parts of the country (strangely, while the Kansai, Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto..., is more to the South than the Kantô, Tokyo-Yokohama-Kawasaki-Chiba.., cherry trees blossom in Kansai later than in Kantô).
