2024 World Championships Men's Free Skate

Figure skating is dead, but ice jumping has come to full bloom.

Yes, I'm bitter. It was brilliant jumpwise, but Yuma is a brilliant complete figure skater and watching Ilia's step sequence after his is painful.
Well, that's the problem with figure skating. Like every sport it is pushing boundaries....and the only way to do it is technically. It's a paradox really, because it's a sport that is proud to combine sport and art, but the art will always be secondary. That has been the reality of this sport always. It is just more noticeable now.

Quick summary:
Adam crazy jump to the podium. When he skates without pressure he is really good.

Shoma still happy after coming back from injury and deliver good skates tru the season.

Yuma is just godlike at this point. When it comes to jumps or artistic.Sadly for him nothing he can do for now when Ilia is there.

Ilia is just out of this world when it comes to jumps. In that tempo Quints are coming from him or some 4+4 combos.Scary thing.Would be fun to see Nathan coming back and fights him 🤣

The same figure skating is dead arguments were made when Nathan won in 2019 and yet here we are still alive with men's skating going strong.
Haha I'm pretty sure it's been declared dead during the early 2000s when Plushy was winning...he was single handedly destroying the sport 😅

And probably before then when the first 3A was landed I should think!

The same figure skating is dead arguments
Figure skating is dead? I will need to strongly disagree with this argument, I think it's more alive than ever and it's exciting to see its evolution.
Anything that doesn't evolve dies but in my humble opinion this is not the case with figure skating. We see a clear evolution in the sport by athletes and coaches not afraid of experimenting and seeing what they're capable of doing, and pushing the level higher and higher.

I did not expect much from this competition, also because there is nobody in it I would be a fan of, the big time with Hanyu, Fernández and Chen over and my life not being very good either. I almost missed the competition because it was not even broadcasted here until the last group on Eurosport (thanks again to TontoK for giving me the link for the second last group). I would have never thought to still see such a stunning end, witnessing history so late in the night today. Insane.

Ilia would have won by 18 points or so even with a 3A instead of a 4A. Well deserved win for him in the end and absolutely historic performance.

But his PCS score is quite inflated, 90.61 for this is just not right.
Brown was lucky they didn't ding him for his landings. Call it even.

Jason did win PCS with almost a 94, so it's not like artistry isn't being rewarded.
Well that's good! I mean it would be super hard to do otherwise after his skate.

Interesting! Nathan still has the highest total score though! (I didn't realise he's actually retired now, bummer.)

Did the choir sing the Japanese anthem? Or does it not have words?

Agreed, Ilia's movements looked very stiff and slow compared to Yuma. Ilia's TES is totally deserved but his PCS.... he got 90 while Shoma got 88!? Yes Shoma fell but that doesn't mean his skating skill is worse than Ilia 🤷‍♀️ But at least the judges still put Adam, Yuma and Jason ahead of Ilia in PCS.

Ilia's win is totally deserved though. He is not a skating god but indeed a quad god!

Ilia wins. Great athletic achievement. I'm impressed with his jumps, and his competitive nature... I have really mixed feelings about his win. I understand how impressive the jumps were, and Yuma made a mistake... but, but, but.... but I have to accept that he was clean and if you do all the quads there's just no one who can compete with that. I just wish I could like his skating. Congrats to him.

Congrats to Yuma on a fabulous all around skate. He's so gifted. That was a brilliant program and so exciting... darn 3A mistake.
And Adam, what the heck? All the way to bronze. Well done. I enjoy his skating energy too.

Jason... Just beautiful.

Sorry for Shoma.. wasn't his best... and i'm not sure his best would've won here either.
