People Magazine Article on Chock and Bates Wedding

I just love all the Hawaiian touches. Madison’s full name is Madison La'akea Te-Lan Hall Chock (Bates :) ), reflecting her multi-sourced ancestry. The Hawaiian part, La’akea, means“sacred light of heaven.” The hotel where the wedding took place is named after the nineteenth century Hawaiian queen (and ruling dowager after her husband’s death) Kapiolani (“arch of heaven” – i.e. rainbow). Rainbows in Hawaiian traditional religious culture heralded and proclaimed the attendence of the gods – hence the appropriateness of the song Somewhere over the Rainbow for Madison's “wedding march” down the aisle.

Here is the Hawaiian version by Israel (IZ) Kamakaiwo’ole

Madi and Evan made the Sunday Styles section of The NY Times. That is the World Championships of wedding coverage. :)

Great Hawaiian touches. RIP Iz, the voice of an angel. Very fitting that they would choose special music.

Thank you for sharing! :thank:

Thanks so much for gifting the NYTimes article @el henry that I mentioned earlier in C/B's fanfest I was not able to access. It's a lovely read, taking me down memory lane re their skating partnership. 🥹

The Hawaiian setting is so dreamlike and gorgeous. 😍 Madi's collabs with Vera Wang and Mathieu Caron for her wedding attire are fantastic. She should have an amazing career as a costume designer post her skating career, since she has already launched her eponymous label. The snake dress and FD program will go down in skating history.

I kinda recall about Evan and his former partner, Emily Samuelson, winning a World Junior championship, but I did not remember the year was 2008. Nor did I realize that the U.S. won back-to-back World Junior championships in ice dance with Madison winning in 2009 with her former partner, Greg Zuerlein. I knew Greg and Madison were previously partnered, but I did not closely follow either ice dance or juniors back then.

The detail about Madison having several guys audition to be her partner (after Greg retired) is also interesting news to me. Apparently, both Evan and Madi (I think of her as 'Maddie' and Hubbell as 'Madi' 😉) have only had two partnerships each in ice dance. Second time has been a charm for them. ✨
