2024 CS Nebelhorn Trophy: Info and pre-game chat

Oberstdorf is quite small, so you can walk anywhere within 30 minutes.
You can take everything in, drinks, food and professional cameras. There is also a booth where you can buy sandwiches, donuts and drinks.
For photos, the best seats are behind the judges, but you don't see the Kiss&Cry and the filming Camera can be in the way.
The seats can be quite hard after a while, so a pillow or a blanket can be useful too.
And if you want to buy things in town, you should do it early, because some shops close already in the afternoon and supermarkets close at 8 pm.
I will add that there is a large pedestrian zone in the center of town, and the area between the rink and the pedestrian zone has so many tourists walking and so few vehicles that it is very easy to walk through.

Also, the base station for the Nebelhornbahn (gondolas to the peak of the Nebelhorn) is about 0.1 kilometers from the rink entrance, so if there is a sunny day and you want to get out of the rink for a while to see the views, that is an easy option.

I was going to recommend the Nordsee restaurant within a kilometer from the rink as a good place to get a quick, buffet-style seafood meal during a break in the skating, but I see on Google Maps that it has permanently closed. :(

Whoa that's a lot :D DEANNA 🤩
Cannot believe they are sending so many skaters... especially 3 men when well.. our men are in a rut ...

As a Conrad fan, I can say that I wish he had been sent more often, maybe he would have kept at it until the end of the cycle. But happy that Skate Canada is testing the men before Nationals and 4CC because we lost a spot and it will be a tough decision.

MAX :love::love2:

I don't know if this account belongs to one of you guys or not, but I found the Nebelhorn advice very helpful:

- The part about the train disruption is important for those who want to come by train, like me. It says Munich (I suppose they mean the main station) to Oberstdorf takes 3 hours... So if one arrives at Munich Hbf in the afternoon, by the time one gets to Oberstdorf, the rink ticket center may be closed (unless there's a competition ticket machine outside, though that's not very likely?)

- I wish they could email purchased tickets to those of us worried they may arrive to find all tickets sold :( I know, I know, that has apparently not happened yet, but, don't underestimate the numbers of Japanese Sota fans (if he goes) and Kazuki fans (if he goes). If Jason, Aymoz or JunHwan end up going, the competition will become even more irresistible to fans. I'm not too thrilled staying in uncertainty, but what can one do if one lives abroad?

- The reports of a walkable town sound very good. 10 minutes downtown-rink walking distance is nice and healthy. I hope the rinks are close to each other.

- the Tweets say all-events are 63 euro with a tourist discount card called Walser card. Does anyone know how much that card costs? (too lazy to google atm, being in limbo with no JPN skaters confirmation, so just trying my luck asking here)

Also, unrelated, but I found the Canadian entries surprising - all 3 men in one event? I would think they're saving money and not going to any other Challengers, but I suppose they must be planning to send Piper & Paul, Fournier-Beaudry/Sorensen, and Kaiya to some event yet, no? So why are all top men here, pitted against each other? No idea.

I think it has to do with the schedule of the Challengers this season. They want to give the skaters with a Grand Prix assignment priority for Challengers so that they have an international competition before it starts.

For why all three men, they may have decided it'd be easier to max out here and send Aleksa Rakic to Budapest as the sole Men's entry (my bet for where they'll send the remaining skaters who want a Challenger before Skate America.) I think they like to have an entry in every discipline where possible in the early Challengers when they send skaters to them, so that's why they decided on the numbers here.

The Eissportzentrum Oberstdorf has three rinks. All of the competition is held in one rink, and the other two are used for practice.

I just checked the train schedule for the Nebehorntrophy time. The train will end at Sonthofen (15 km before Oberstorf) and a bus service is available.
There is no ticket machine outside. But you can make a ticket reservation. Selling fo tickets starts September 1st (Phone +49 8322/700-5150). Call at offical office times (10am to 4 pm German time)
The walser card you will get after check-in at your hotel of "Ferienwohnung". Some have the option "Bergbahn unlimited" that means with the Walser Card you can use the mountain cable cars of Oberstdorf and Kleinwalsertal for free as often as you want to

one more comment. Make sure that you book in the center part of Oberstdorf to make sure everything is in a walking distance. Some of the smaller villages like "Tiefenbach" or "Kornau" also belonging to Oberstdorf but are really far away. Oberstdorf has a size of over 200 km2. Oberstdorf Hostel e.g is really far away

Thanks a lot for the info! I'm guessing the bus is going to wait for the Oberstdorf-bound trains, then, and a Munich-Oberstdorf ticket would be valid on it... hopefully. At least that's how things work where I live. I hope JSF announce their entries soon so I can go ahead with route planning.
It sounds like the Walser card is for free, then? That would be great of course. I picked a place that is less than a kilometer from the city center, so I'm guessing it's gonna be about 2km altogether to the rink. But the bus No. 9 could help. 1km is not a problem for me, but in inclement weather and dark, 2 km would. :]

Yes, I meant the main rink and the public practice rink. The tweets said that practices were accessible for the public, so I hope that will be the case.

The one practice rink is just off the foyer going into the main rink. This practice rink has always been available to spectators every time I have been there. The second floor restaurant has big windows overlooking this practice rink.

The second practice rink is hidden somewhere and I assume it is not available to spectators.

I go along with all the posters saying good things about Oberstdorf. It is one of my favorite places in the world. I have been there two times with my wife and once after she died. The main Oberstdorf accommodation site that is mentioned above has a map view that shows you where the holiday apartments and hotels are located with respect to the rink (the rink is next to the valley station for the gondola).

As you are walking through the lobby from the front entrance towards the main rink, there is a rink on the left. If I recall correctly, there is no seating in this rink, and I think that there have not been practices scheduled in it. The primary practice rink is on the right as you are walking through (just past the restrooms and the snack bar), and this rink has seats for spectators. Practices are also held in the main rink when there is no competition happening.

YEEAAAH Mone and Hana! And Kimmy, Livia and Sofja :love2: but no Challenger for Beccari/Guarise so far, I think they are probably a bit behind in training...and no Loena, but I think she said at some point that she doesn't know if she'll do a Challenger this year...

I just realised that Janse van Rensburg/Steffan aren't on the list although they said they'd start their season here

Some of my favorites in this field. Sota, Shingo and Azusa, Hana Y, Livia and Kimmy, Olga, Lilah and Lewis, Lajoie and Lagha... yay.

I am surprised to see no other Italians than Frangipani in men. I guess Matteo's planning to let his body rest as long as possible after the spring surgery, and Grassl is perhaps not competition-ready yet. Aymoz is probably aiming for Nice Trophy. Those who train in Russia or near Russia, like Egadze or Shaidorov, are likely going to do Denis Ten Memorial, or Slovakia/Hungary CS. No Jason so far, I guess that's planned?

No Rino Matsuike... why  She trains with Sota, and can't go to Nepela due to its overlap with Skate Canada. I'll keep hoping they'll send her to Zagreb... and Wakaba and Yuna Aoki, too.
Looks like only Rion can get assigned to Nepela, then... fingers crossed for all the JPN girls.

Why? Japanese Nationals results - Rino 17th, Wakaba 12th, Yuna 9th.

They were, but when there's a will, there's a way. European skaters may not have A level and B level money, but they do have opportunities to compete abroad on a level lower than GP, to test their programs and increase their chances for good WS and SB. It should not be one or the other, IMO. I hope things change for JPN skaters, and all top ones will be able to get as many CS/B event chances as European ones.
