I have a slightly off-topic question but this thread seems the place to ask it. Does anyone here know if spectators are allowed into the Oberstdorf Rink during the times when there are no competitions? I would like to go to Oberstdorf sometime and just watch the normal coaching and practices and wonder if that would be allowed?
Here is the official website: https://www.eissportzentrum-oberstdorf.de/info/preise-oeffnungszeiten.html
It costs 3 € and with Walser card it's for free.
At "Training" you can also see the training schedule for the week. Here it is for example for this week: http://hallenplan.eissportzentrum-oberstdorf.de/

Considering there are so many skaters attending, I'm not sure if they can stick with starting at 2 PM. What do you think?
I was thinking the same and expect they change it to 11 or 12 AM.

Thank you very much Pandicorn. It is great to see a detailed schedule. Is Halle 1 the rink that does not have any spectator seats?

A slightly related question: Has anyone found Holiday Apartments that they were able to reserve or pay for with a U.S. issued credit card. I was looking at the Oberstdorf accomodation website and the FeWos that showed anything about how to pay said they took the EC Card. As a U.S. resident I don't think I can obtain a Eurocard or Girocard. In the past I think the Gästehaus Kreuzeck where I stayed was willing to accept a reservation without a deposit and I paid them in cash from an ATM after I arrived. It would really be nice if someone would take a Mastercard in place of a Eurocard.

Halle 1 is the main rink and has the most spectator seats. Halle 2 is a smaller rink (for curling) with only two roas of seat at two sides (during Nebelhorntrophy reserved to the skaters for warm-up and catering). Halle 3 is the training rink with about 500 seats. You have a view on Halle 3 from the restaurant in the first floor.
When I booked via Oberstdorf.de I paid via bank transfer in advance, sometimes I paid cash when I arrived. I think this is different for each place.

Sort of an update on the schedule:
I asked on a post of the Deutsche Eislauf-Union on Instagram if the starting time will still be 2 PM. They said that a detailed schedule will soon be published. I guess they're still trying to figure things out :D

Thanks for the info. I hope they won't require the Sportity app for that, and that it will be posted somewhere online as well.
One question that's been on my mind though, as I don't travel to the mountains all that much: is there a risk of bears roaming in Oberstdorf? I mean, it's that time of the year when they scavenge for the last food they can get before disappearing off into their mountain lairs to hibernate... so I wonder if I should take some pepper spray with me just in case? Has anyone ever heard of bear visits in Oberstdorf? I'm afraid of those animals so I have to ask. 😬

Since more than 10 years I am at least once a year in Oberstdorf - I never thought about bears. More dangerours is the growing group of thourists with e-bikes and pedelecs in the mountains.

The last time a bear was seen in upper Allgäu (not around Oberstdorf) was in may 2023.
Since then there hasn't been a sighting, but authorities suspect that there might be a bear potentially crossing the border to Germany, as one young brown bear was spotted on a wildlife cam in the the state of Vorarlberg in Austria. That was in may 2024 though.

There aren't any known bears currently in Bavaria. The last bear really living in Germany (not just crossing borders) was shot in 1835, then there was one originally from Italy that was shot in 2006 shortly after being spotted in Bavaria.

In 2022 and 2023 there were traces of one (or potentially two) bears found in Upper Bavaria (actually close to where I live), but those came and returned to Tyrol.

In general, you don't need to worry about bears in Bavaria. The only know popultion of bears in the alps lives in Trentino in Italy, which is around 120 km away from german borders (also, in Slovenia).
If you plan to go hiking while staying in Oberstdorf, one thing that you need to look out for way more than bears is the weather. Especially in summer, the weather close to the alps can change drastically in very short time, with thunderstorms and heavy rainfall forming in hours. Depending on the temperature some might happen in september too, as the weather has been crazy here recently.
That said, I think taking pepper spray with you when going to a foreign country is never wrong. Oberstdorf is very small, but very touristy too. And there are crazy people everywhere.

When you pay to watch a Challenger, does that also generally give you access to replays for x days? I am probably going to be busy most of the day on September 21 and unable to watch live. The only stream I've specifically paid for before was Challenge Cup 2023, which had replays available for a month, but it's obviously not a CS event.

Challengers are streamed on multiple different platforms. Nebelhorn will be on Sportdeutschland.tv and as far as I remember from previous editions, Bavarian Open and German nationals, you can't rewind the stream but the archive should become available the next day.

Aw, that's a pity, I was looking forward to seeing Lajoie/Lagha.
Also, I hear that extremely bad weather is coming to southern Germany. One article even says they expect a major flooding in the Munich area. I hope everyone's safe

What a pity Daria and Michel are not coming. Even if I cannot watch their programmes, it still would be nice to see how competition ready they are in the results!

Also, does anyone have any recommendations regarding afforable restaurants? I'll take a look at Tripadvisor, but recommendations from GSers would be even better.
