A truck has appeared in front of the National Assembly building in Yeouido.
When figure skater Hae-in Lee was effectively sentenced to retirement with a three-year suspension, fans took it upon themselves to wage a public opinion war.
They demanded a full-scale investigation by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, claiming that the skating federation's poor investigation and the sports council's carelessness led to the 19-year-old Hae-in Lee becoming a sexual predator.
A thousand people signed a petition in just two days expressing sympathy for Hae-in Lee's unfair situation.
[Figure fans / Truck protest: I want to tell you that the fans are supporting Hae-in, believing in her, and wanting to help clear up her grievances.]
Lee Hae-in received a three-year suspension for sexually harassing her junior A during a training camp in Italy in May.
Lee Hae-in’s appeal that it was not forced sexual assault but an expression of affection between a secret lover was not accepted, but Lee Hae-in decided to argue the case in court.
She plans to file an injunction to suspend the disciplinary action, claiming that A never felt “sexual shame,” that the federation did not know about the relationship at the time of the disciplinary action, and that the three-year disciplinary action was excessively harsh and an abuse of disciplinary power.
Athlete A, who was identified as the victim, belatedly revealed that she consistently stated during the investigation that she hoped for leniency in Lee Hae-in.
This is a different tone from the first statement in June, right after the skating federation's disciplinary action, where he drew a line by saying, "I was very embarrassed and surprised" and "I started psychiatric treatment."
The disciplinary action in the sports world has come to an end, but the legal battle is just beginning, and with fans feeling that the punishment is too harsh, the aftermath of the Lee Hae-in incident is likely to continue for some time.
